Chapter 2179: Chapter 1430: It Will Be Recorded in Medical History (Part 2)

"I know! The causality has been established."

Weber was silent for a moment. "Are you sure?"

"I’m sure! The activation of the original cell mechanism is a necessary condition for function recovery. When it’s cleared, the recovery stops. This is the evidence of causality you wanted."

Weber didn’t speak again. He picked up the chart and looked at it once more, then put it down. His expression was calm, but Manstein noticed his fingers on the desktop tighten slightly. This subtle body language was all too familiar to him. A man who had conducted scientific research for fifty years, upon seeing evidence he had waited for so long, didn’t cheer or weep but clenched his fingers. Because he knew this evidence wasn’t the end, it was the beginning.

"I’m excited, but I don’t know what to say now, Manstein. Sometimes it’s just like this. It’s right there under our noses, yet we know nothing. Looking back now, it even appeared in my laboratory, and I saw nothing... This suggests that stem cell theory and spatial orientation gene theory are actually parts of a larger theory: one studies what it becomes, and the other studies where it appears. It’s the combination that is complete; where it becomes what, that is the truth."

Weber couldn’t organize a complete sentence for a while, expressing himself in a fragmented manner.

The filming crew started shooting in the afternoon.

The producer was a forty-something German woman with short hair, speaking crisply and decisively. She approached Yang Ping, handing over a business card. "Professor Yang, our shooting schedule for today is: twenty minutes in the rehabilitation training room, twenty minutes in the animal room, and a dialogue between the Chinese and German teams... Is that okay with you?"

Yang Ping thought for a moment. "The rehabilitation training room is fine, but we can’t shoot the faces of patients. Chen Jianguo agreed to be filmed from the back and the side. The animal room is okay, but don’t film experimental procedures. Dialogue?"

"Film your scientific discussions, with no need to perform deliberately, just speak as you normally do. We’ll try not to disturb you, and according to the agreement, we won’t film you."

Yang Ping glanced at Manstein, who shrugged as if to say, "It’s up to you."

"Okay! But there’s one condition—if I feel it’s inappropriate, I can stop it at any time."

"Of course! As per the agreement, you can call a halt or request to delete content at any time during the filming."

In the rehabilitation training room, Chen Jianguo was performing standing exercises. He was holding onto the parallel bars, standing very steadily, and more steadily than last week. Sister Li stood beside him, holding a towel. When the filming crew entered, Chen Jianguo didn’t turn around but continued standing.

The producer walked up to Sister Li, whispered a few words in English, and Manstein helped to translate. Sister Li shook her head. The producer nodded and retreated to the corner. The whole process took less than a minute—communication, rejection, acceptance—crisp and neat, with no entanglement.

The cameraman started the camera, focusing on Chen Jianguo’s back. His shoulders were broad, his back straight, and though his legs were still trembling slightly, they were firmly planted on the ground. The scene contained no face, just the back of a man learning to stand again.

After a few minutes, the producer called for a stop. The crew quietly left the rehabilitation training room, gently closing the door behind them.

Weber stood in the hallway, watching the scene.

The animal room was the last stop.

Fritz was grooming M7. He didn’t look up when the crew entered but continued with his work. The producer went over and said a few words in German. Fritz replied with a single word; Yang Ping didn’t understand it, but from the tone, he judged it was "okay."

The cameraman began filming. This time, there was no attempt to avoid anything: Fritz’s hands, M7’s fur, the bars of the cage, the light from the desk lamp. M7 lay in the cage, eyes narrowed, and kicked its hind legs in front of the camera, as if to greet.

"Is it this one?" Weber asked.

"It’s this one!" Manstein said, "It’s called M7."

Weber crouched down in front of the cage, looking at M7. M7 opened its eyes, tilted its head to look at him, then stretched out its hand through the bars of the cage, fingers spread.

Weber was stunned. He didn’t reach out to grab it, but turned his head to look at Manstein. "What’s it doing?"

"It’s waiting for you to shake its hand."

"Does it recognize me?"

"It doesn’t know you, but it recognizes goodwill. Whoever shows it kindness, it knows. It can’t tell a Nobel laureate from an ordinary person, but it can discern who brings goodwill."

Weber turned back, looking at M7’s outstretched hand. After a few seconds, he extended his hand, gently grasping M7’s fingers. M7 shook them, as if saying, "Hello." Weber suddenly laughed, a laugh containing no pretension: a seventy-year-old Nobel laureate squatting in front of a monkey’s cage, laughing like a child. The cameraman captured this moment, the camera surprisingly steady.

"M7 will be recorded in medical history!" Weber said, gazing at M7, talking to himself. As he stood up, his legs had gone numb from squatting, and he wobbled. Fritz gave him a hand. "Thank you," Weber said, then turned to Yang Ping. "Professor Yang, I want to collaborate with you, no I mean... Manstein, help me out. What I mean is, this project is enormous. I want to contribute something, like research on stem cells. I’m saying... I work for Professor Yang."

"Employment! Yes, Professor, Weber says he wants to work for you! You assign some work to his team. He can conduct research in the area of stem cells."

Yang Ping looked at him. "Professor Weber, are you sure?"

"I’m sure! Even though I’m over seventy, I’m still in great shape. You don’t need to worry about my health."

Yang Ping was silent for a moment. "Alright! Cooperation!"

"Employment, it’s employment, Professor!" Manstein corrected.

Weber extended his hand, and Yang Ping grasped it. M7 lay in the cage, watching the two humans, stretching out its hand again. No one shook its hand. It waited for a while, then withdrew it, turned over and went back to sleep, seemingly displeased, feeling greatly neglected.

That evening, Weber didn’t stay at a hotel. He stayed overnight in the duty room at the institute, saying, "I’ll need to look at data first thing in the morning, staying in a hotel is a waste of time." Yang Ping arranged for a slightly firmer mattress and a buckwheat pillow, as seniors benefit from a firm bed for their back.

Manstein escorted Weber to the duty room. Weber took the items, thanked him, and closed the door. Manstein stood outside the door, recalling years ago in Weber’s lab in Germany. He had waited outside a long time, hoping to ask a question. The door opened, Weber poked his head out, glanced at him, said, "I don’t have time now," and closed the door. That was the first time. Now it was the second time, the door closed again, but this time the feeling was completely different.

When Manstein left the institute, he specifically checked on the rehabilitation center, glanced through the glass window at the rehabilitation training room. Chen Jianguo was not there, nor was Sister Li. On the wall, the paper now had several more sticky notes. "Jianguo stood for seven and a half minutes today" "Professor Manstein, see you tomorrow."

He stood at the doorway looking at those colorful sticky notes but didn’t go in. These words weren’t for him; they were written for the future. Years later, when Chen Jianguo can walk by himself and looks back at these notes, what will he feel?

In the animal room, Fritz still sat by M7’s cage, holding a well-thumbed book, the desk lamp casting light on the pages. M7 lay there, eyes narrowed, its hind legs kicking briefly in its dreams.

Fritz softly uttered a phrase in German, though no one else heard what was said, except M7. M7 kicked its hind legs again in its dreams, as if it understood.

M7, it will be recorded in medical history! Manstein repeated Weber’s words to himself.
