Chapter 2205: Chapter 1442: Good News (Part 2)

Three people sat down to eat. Xiao Su first served Xiao Shu a bowl of soup, then used a spoon to remove the meat from the ribs, cut it into small pieces, and placed it in the small bowl in front of Xiao Shu. Xiao Shu ate by himself, getting oil all over his mouth, occasionally looking up to smile at Yang Ping, revealing a few small baby teeth, like a row of recently emerged white mushrooms.

"Did Chen Jianguo’s trip to San Francisco cause quite a stir?" Xiao Su asked while wiping Xiao Shu’s mouth.

"Yes, after all, it’s a groundbreaking innovation."

"A patient paralyzed for twelve years walking on stage standing tall is more convincing than any expert."

"Indeed!"

Yang Ping nodded.

After dinner, Yang Ping took Xiao Shu for a walk downstairs in the community.

April in Nandu, with the evening breeze carrying the scent of flowers, not too cold nor too hot, just right. The magnolias in the community had already wilted, but the roses were blooming perfectly, red, pink, yellow, each one decorating the green bushes. A few elderly people played chess in the pavilion, surrounded by a circle of neighbors watching, occasionally exclaiming "Check!" or "Good move!".

Xiao Shu rode his little tricycle ahead, while Yang Ping followed slowly behind. The tricycle was red, with a small bell hanging from the handlebar, and Xiao Shu rang it every few steps. The "ding-a-ling" sound echoed through the evening community, crisp like echoes of childhood.

"Daddy, look! Flowers!"

Xiao Shu stopped the bike, pointing at a cluster of roses by the roadside. Yang Ping squatted down, picked a pink one, removed the thorn from the stem, and handed it to Xiao Shu. Xiao Shu took it, carefully pinching it in his hand, sniffed it under his nose, then wrinkled his nose.

"Doesn’t smell nice!"

Yang Ping laughed, "Flowers aren’t for smelling, they’re for looking at. See how beautiful it is."

Xiao Shu placed the flower in the basket of his tricycle and continued riding.

Yang Ping followed behind him, gazing at his son’s small back, thinking of those still busy in the laboratory. Weber in Heidelberg, Manstein in San Francisco, Tang Shun might be working late in the office. Everyone was doing their own thing in their own way, each at their own pace.

His pace was here, in the evening community, following a two-year-old boy, riding a red little tricycle.

This was what he wanted.

Back home, Xiao Su had already prepared the bathwater for Xiao Shu. Xiao Shu took off his socks, his pants, and ran into the bathroom with his bare butt, jumping into the tub with a "splash," water splattering everywhere.

Xiao Su wrapped him in a towel and carried him to the crib. Xiao Shu’s wet hair stuck to his forehead like a bunch of black seaweed. He yawned, his eyes began to glaze, his upper and lower eyelids were fighting, but he was still holding on, unwilling to sleep.

"Daddy, tell a story."

Yang Ping sat by the bed, picked up the tattered copy of Journey to the West from the bedside table; Xiao Shu loved listening to stories from Journey to the West.

"Which episode today?"

"Monkey! Tell the monkey story!"

Yang Ping turned to the Chapter where Sun Wukong causes havoc in the heavenly palace and began to read.

"It is said that the Great Sage Equalling Heaven, Sun Wukong, was invited up to heaven by Gold Star Taibai and given the title Horses’ Fortune..."

Xiao Shu listened while his eyes slowly closed. His eyelashes cast shadows on his cheeks like small fan blades, his breathing became steady, his small belly rose and fell like a trumpet flower opening and closing in the breeze.

Yang Ping finished the Chapter, closed the book, and sat by the bed watching his son’s sleeping face for a while. Xiao Shu’s mouth corners slightly lifted, could be dreaming, maybe of the Somersault Cloud, maybe of the Jingu Bang, maybe of a monkey running out from a cage, tail held high.

He gently closed the door and stepped out.

Xiao Su was sitting on the sofa, holding a cup of warm water, steam rising up from the cup. She had recently increased her water intake; she didn’t used to be like this.

"Xiao Su," Yang Ping sat beside her, "You’ve been drinking a lot of water lately."

Xiao Su remained silent for a moment, then placed the cup on the coffee table, turned to look at Yang Ping, reached out, took Yang Ping’s hand, and put it on her belly.

"Feel it."

Yang Ping’s hand stayed there, motionless. Beneath his palm was the loose home wear, under the home wear was warm skin, under the skin was—he hadn’t felt anything yet, how could he, so soon. But he knew what Xiao Su was saying, his fingers began to tremble, starting from the fingertips, spreading to his palm, to his wrist, to his entire arm.

"Number two is coming?" His voice was slightly hoarse.

"Almost two months now, went to the hospital last week for a check-up, the ultrasound is in the drawer, do you want to see?"

Yang Ping didn’t speak, his hand still placed on Xiao Su’s belly, not moving. His eyes were red, but he didn’t cry. He wasn’t someone easily moved emotionally, but at this moment, something surged in his chest, like waves, pounding against the walls of his heart.

"What’s wrong with you?" Xiao Su leaned closer, staring into his eyes.

"Happy!"

Xiao Su smiled, her smile wasn’t of happiness, but of pride, like a child secretly hiding a candy, waiting for the most unguarded moment to reveal it, watching the other’s surprised expression, thinking "I won."

"Do you want a boy or a girl?"

"Either is fine!"

"Name one!"

Yang Ping thought for a moment. "A girl, like you."

Xiao Su was stunned for a moment, then leaned her head against his shoulder.

Yang Ping leaned into the sofa, feeling the weight on his shoulder, feeling the little life within the belly, not born yet, already making his heart race.

He thought, this was what he wanted.

Not a cover on Cell, not applause from the world, not two thousand people standing in ovation. It was this woman sleeping on his shoulder, the child sleeping beside him, the heartbeat not yet born. It was the dinner table every evening, the strolls in the community at dusk, the sound of bedtime stories, the leisure of a weekend without work.

These things, each very small, so small they seem insignificant to the world. But together they form his life.

Night had fallen.

Xiao Shu had long sank into dreamland, with only his steady breathing in the nursery, like a small pendulum swinging in the dark. Xiao Su leaned on Yang Ping’s shoulder, her breathing gradually growing long, her hand still resting on her belly, as if confirming something. Yang Ping didn’t move, afraid that any movement would wake her.

The living room light was dimmed to its lowest setting, the warm yellow light draping over the sofa, Xiao Su’s profile appearing especially soft under this light. Her skin wasn’t as pale as it was back when she was a nurse, it had tanned a bit from taking care of the child, but her complexion was good, her cheeks had a faint blush.

Yang Ping recalled the scene when she first told him she was pregnant. It was an ordinary weekend morning, he was sitting at the table having breakfast, Xiao Su placed a cup of soy milk in front of him and casually said, "I might be pregnant."

"Might?"

"Pregnancy test says, two lines."

He couldn’t describe the feeling. There was surprise, tension, anticipation, and a kind of indescribable depth.

Xiao Su shifted on his shoulder, changed position, and continued sleeping. Her mouth corners slightly lifted, perhaps dreaming, possibly of Xiao Shu learning to ride a tricycle, maybe of the child not yet born, or maybe other things.

Yang Ping closed his eyes, listening to the sounds of the home in the darkness.

He had no desire to leave; he was just here.

Yang Ping pulled up the blanket, covering Xiao Su’s shoulder, then leaned back against the sofa, closed his eyes. Now, on the tail end of this spring, in this quiet, warm, breathing-filled home, he wanted nothing more than a good night’s sleep.

Outside, one by one, the lights of Nandu extinguished. The leaves of the phoenix tree lightly swayed in the night wind, making a soft rustling sound, as if countless people were whispering.
