Chapter 2253: Chapter 1464
Before the door even opened, a rush of footsteps could be heard inside, and then the door was suddenly pulled open.
"Dad!"
Dabao rushed over, wrapping his two small arms around his leg, rubbing his face against his pants. Yang Ping almost lost his balance, holding onto the door frame with one hand and ruffling his son’s hair with the other: "Did you study today?"
"Yes!" Dabao tilted his face up, his eyes sparkling like two little stars, "Mom had me recite ancient poems, I recited three!"
"Which three?"
"Thoughts in a Silent Night, Spring Dawn, and... and..." Dabao scratched his head, his brows furrowing, "There’s another one whose name I forgot, but I can recite it... Moonlight in front of my bed, suspecting frost on the ground..."
"That’s Thoughts in a Silent Night, you mentioned it just now." Yang Ping laughed as he picked him up and walked into the living room.
Xiao Su poked her head out from the kitchen, still holding a spatula in her hand, with a bit of flour on her forehead: "Back already? The food will be ready soon, go wash your hands first."
Yang Ping placed Dabao on the sofa and walked into the kitchen. Xiao Su was sautéing vegetables in the pan, the aroma spreading, blending with the hum of the exhaust fan, creating a peculiar harmony. He hugged her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder: "Thank you for your hard work."
Xiao Su lightly tapped the back of his hand with the spatula handle: "Go wash your hands, don’t mess around, the oil is going to splatter."
Yang Ping loosened his grip with a smile, then walked over to the sink to wash his hands, the warm water washing away the smell of disinfectant, and came back after finishing.
"How was today?" Xiao Su asked while serving the dishes.
"Not bad." Yang Ping said, "Sisi has sent a letter."
Xiao Su’s hand paused, the spatula hanging in mid-air, then continued to pour the dishes into the plate: "That little girl?"
"Yes, she’s fifteen years old now, won a gold medal at the International Biology Olympics, and got direct admission to Nandu Medical University for the eight-year program."
Xiao Su turned around, looking at him with a gaze mixed with emotion and warmth: "She really made it happen."
"She made it." Yang Ping said, a trace of pride in his voice, like a teacher talking about their most outstanding student, "When I replied, I had a somewhat harsh tone, reminding her that being a doctor requires medical ethics, calmness, and stress resistance."
"You," Xiao Su shook her head, though the corners of her mouth were curved, "are strict with everyone, especially with yourself. The young girl finally earned a gold medal, you can’t say a few more nice words?"
"Save the nice words for later." Yang Ping took the plate from her hand and headed towards the dining table, "Let her know how tough this path is, better than falling down later."
Xiao Su followed him with a bowl of rib soup: "You always have a reason."
Dinner was cozy, yet noisy. Dabao sat in the child’s dining chair, holding a spoon in one hand and gripping a rib in the other, eating with sauce all over his face like a little bear stealing honey. Xiao Su was wiping his mouth while muttering: "Eat slowly, no one is going to snatch it from you."
"The ribs dad makes are the best!" Dabao said unclearly, with half a piece of meat still in his mouth, "A hundred times better than kindergarten’s!"
Yang Ping picked up a piece of meat for him: "Next time Dad will make an ’iterated version’ of braised pork for you, okay?"
"What is iteration?" Dabao tilted his head, his eyes full of curiosity.
"Well..." Yang Ping thought for a moment, trying to explain in a way a five-year-old could understand, "It means making it tastier. Like the first time you make it, it tastes sixty points; the second time, you learn new methods, it tastes eighty points; the third time you improve further, it becomes ninety points. Each time better than the last, that’s iteration."
Dabao nodded as if he somewhat understood, then earnestly said: "Then Dad, next time make it a hundred points!"
"Alright, a hundred points." Yang Ping agreed with a smile, picking up an egg for him.
Xiao Su sighed, but the corners of her mouth were curved: "You two father and son, one dares to say, the other dares to agree."
After dinner, Yang Ping accompanied Dabao for a while building blocks. They built a castle, Dabao insisted on putting an Ultraman on top of the castle, saying it’s "to protect the princess." Yang Ping asked him where the princess was, Dabao said: "The princess is in the kitchen, she’s Mommy."
Yang Ping laughed so much he almost knocked over the castle.
Midway through the story, Dabao fell asleep, his little head tilted on the pillow, a bit of drool still at the corner of his mouth, clutching the Ultraman toy tightly. Yang Ping gently tucked him in, extracting the Ultraman from his grasp, placing it on the bedside table, then kissed his forehead before leaving the room.
Xiao Su was in the living room tidying up toys, putting the blocks into the box one by one. Seeing him come out, she asked: "Sleeping?"
"Sleeping." Yang Ping sat down on the sofa, rubbing his temples, "Told three stories today, he fell asleep before finishing the third one."
"That’s because your stories were too boring." Xiao Su said with a smile, "Last time when I told dinosaur stories, he listened twice before sleeping."
Yang Ping opened his phone, saw a message from Tang Shun: "Professor, I’ve sent the draft framework for the thesis to your email, please check it when you have time."
He replied with an "Okay," then leaned back on the sofa, closing his eyes. The leather of the sofa was a little cool, but the cushion was soft, like a tender embrace.
Xiao Su walked over, sat beside him, leaning her head against his shoulder, her hair with a faint scent of shampoo.
"Tired?" she asked, her voice soft.
"A little." Yang Ping said, "There are a lot of things going on recently, the projects need to progress on multiple fronts, it’s the critical stage, many directions are vague, they aren’t confident, and there’s also a sixteen-year-old brainstem glioma patient under treatment, the effect is not very certain."
Xiao Su remained silent for a while, her fingers unconsciously stroking the back of his hand. Her hand was soft and warm, but not as smooth and delicate as before.
