Chapter 2270 - 1471: Openness Brings Vitality

Chapter 2270: Chapter 1471: Openness Brings Vitality

Time flies really fast, another half year has passed, and Nandu’s winter is indeed unreasonable, with many people on the streets wearing just a T-shirt, even without a jacket.

After Lin Xiaoyu’s sixth infusion ended, Yang Ping stood at the ward door for a while.

The nurse pushed the treatment cart down the corridor, the wheels making a faint rumbling sound on the tiled floor. He checked his watch, it was half-past four in the afternoon. According to the arrangement, two hours after infusion, blood is drawn to check inflammatory factors, four hours for liver and kidney function, and eight hours for coagulation function. These don’t require his personal attention as Lu Xiaolu would arrange it. But he still wanted to stay a little longer.

Not because he was worried, but because he wanted to see Lin Xiaoyu sit up from the bed, walk to the window, and look at the gingko trees outside.

After the last infusion ended, she managed to do it. She stood up holding the bed edge, without holding the wall, without help, walking six steps to the window, reached out, and touched the glass with her fingertip. The glass was cold, and her fingers were cold too. She withdrew her hand, blew on it, then reached out again to draw a smiling face on the glass.

The smiling face lingered on the glass for a few seconds, then disappeared.

"Professor Yang," came Lu Xiaolu’s voice from behind, "Lin Xiaoyu’s MRI results are out."

Yang Ping turned around. Lu Xiaolu stood in the corridor, holding a tablet computer, his expression calm. But Yang Ping had known him for many years, and knew his "calmness" had many variations. This calmness was not because there was nothing, but there was something and he was unsure what expression to use.

"Let’s talk in the office."

The two of them entered the doctor’s office. Lu Xiaolu closed the door, placed the tablet on the table, and brought up the images.

"This MRI was done this morning, look here."

Yang Ping leaned down, staring at the screen. The necrotic area at the center of the tumor was already obvious, the edges clear, the low-signal ring complete. He sized it up visually, it had grown larger than last time.

"Measured it?" he asked.

"Maximum diameter 11.2 millimeters. Increased by 2.1 millimeters from last time."

Yang Ping nodded. This was the sixth infusion, the necrotic area had grown from the 3.2 millimeters after the first infusion to 11.2 millimeters now. Each time it increased, each time it proved the treatment was working. But the tumor hasn’t completely disappeared, the rate of increase of the necrotic area had slowed, from a forty percent increase down to just over twenty percent. This wasn’t a plateau, it had decelerated.

"There’s another change." Lu Xiaolu switched the image to another sequence, "The edematous band surrounding the tumor has shrunk by about thirty percent compared to last time. This indicates the inflammatory response is subsiding, and normal brain tissue is recovering."

Yang Ping stared at the screen, saying nothing.

Lin Xiaoyu’s treatment had been going on for nearly half a year. She transformed from a girl sitting in a wheelchair, panting after walking just a few steps, into someone who could walk to the window on her own and draw a smiley face on glass. She changed from a girl whose brain felt clouded, with numbers jumping around on paper, into someone able to do quadratic equation problems, wanting to take the monthly exams. Her body was fixing itself. In the slowest, most stable, and solid way.

"What’s next month’s plan?" Yang Ping asked.

Lu Xiaolu flipped through the schedule book: "Seventh infusion, three weeks later. Full blood panel, biochemistry, coagulation, inflammatory factors before infusion. Follow-up MRI twenty-four hours after infusion."

"Move the MRI up to before the infusion. I want to see the latest size of the necrotic area and scope of the edematous band, then decide the dosage for the seventh infusion."

"Okay." Lu Xiaolu noted it down in his notebook.

When Yang Ping walked out of the office, the corridor was already quite empty. The duty nurse at the nurse station was writing records, the lamp light casting her face gently. As he passed the nurse station, she looked up and called him.

Yang Ping nodded, not pausing his steps.

He got into the elevator, pressed the button for the first floor. As the elevator door closed, he saw his reflection in the stainless steel door panel. The White Gown was a bit wrinkled, the collar slightly open, hair windblown a bit messy. He reached up to tidy it, the elevator arrived at the first floor, the door opened.

As he walked out of the inpatient building, it was already almost dark. There was just a line of deep blue light left on the western skyline, the silhouettes of the gingko trees’ branches turned into black cutouts in the dusk. He crossed the garden, passed that track he’d run on countless times, out the hospital side door, heading home.

When he got home, Dabao was lying on the living room carpet, drawing. Xiao Su was cooking in the kitchen, the extractor fan noise was loud, drowning out the sound of the spatula clashing against the pot bottom.

"Dad!" Dabao looked up, with a few marks from the colored pencils on his face, "Today I drew our family!"

Yang Ping walked over, squatted down to look. On the paper, there were four people: a tall one, that’s dad; a shorter one, that’s mom; an even shorter one, that’s Dabao; and the smallest one, lying in a rectangle like a bed, that’s Erbao.

"What’s Erbao doing?" Yang Ping asked.

"Sleeping, the little baby just sleeps all day, doesn’t do anything." Dabao’s tone carried a hint of dissatisfaction, probably because Erbao had taken the attention he used to have all to himself.

"You slept all day when you were a baby too."

"I did not!"

"You did, the first month you came back from the hospital, you slept twenty hours a day. Your mom said you were like a little koala, hanging on a tree, not moving."

Dabao thought about it, decided not to pursue the matter. He lifted the paper, looked at it against the light, then nodded in satisfaction.
