Yang Ping finished reading, and put the letter back on the table.
The "New Horizons" column, in the over two hundred years since the New England Journal of Medicine was founded, countless columns have been set up, but "New Horizons" has only appeared three times. Weber put down the pipette he was holding, walked to the computer, and opened a diagram. The repair program map, that huge network map with five hundred sixty-three nodes, three thousand two connections.
"We conducted a topological analysis of the entire network." Weber pointed to the diagram on the screen, using the mouse to circle a few areas, "Using graph theoretical algorithms, calculated each node’s degree, betweenness, closeness, eigenvector centrality. Degree is how many connections a node has, betweenness is how often a node serves as a bridge in the network, closeness is the average distance from a node to all other nodes, eigenvector centrality is how important a node is based on the importance of the nodes it connects to. Combining the rankings of the four indicators, the top one is this node."
Weber clicked on a node marked with a red circle on the map. Yang Ping leaned closer to the screen, looking at the node’s number and annotation.
"Receptor X," Weber said, "it’s the receptor for the unknown factor. It’s at the very center of the network, connecting six out of the seven modules. Its degree is the highest in the network, its betweenness is the highest, its closeness is the highest. Its eigenvector centrality is nearly double that of the second place. To put it simply: it’s the most important crossroads on this map. All signals must pass through it. Without it, the repair program cannot be activated. Finding it, means finding the main switch of the repair program. Unlocking it, opens the door to the body’s self-repair."
