Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]
Chapter 250: Zombies. They could hear the way the building had gone quiet in strange patches. They could feel the heat pressing down harder with every hour. A looped broadcast did not make anyone feel better. It only made the whole thing look even more fake.
Up in the apartments, the residents kept peeking out from balconies and windows. Some of them had been frightened by the earlier gunshots, some had locked their doors tight, and some had already started to panic over the water supply. The building had that ugly feeling of a place where everybody was waiting for something bad to happen next. Bai Li, on the other hand, was in the courtyard below, moving like she had no intention of giving the zombies a single second to breathe. The Tang sword flashed in her hand again and again, fast enough that people on the upper floors could only catch pieces of the movement. Wherever she passed, zombie bodies dropped one after another, leaving behind a trail that made the whole open space look like a battlefield.
Wang Hao 302: "Damn, am I seeing things? Come quick, is that Bai Li killing zombies downstairs? Wasn’t she supposed to be dead? She looks perfectly fine."
Wang Dong 704: Impossible! She must have been shot dead by Hu Xuecheng. You must be mistaken. Let me go check.
Wang Dong walked to the window and, sure enough, saw Bai Li swiftly wielding a Tang sword, killing zombies. Wang Dong leaned against the balcony, muttering, "Impossible, this is impossible."
Ma Shuai 801: I saw it too! It really is Bai Li. She hasn’t changed her clothes; she’s still wearing that baseball uniform.
Wang Wuyang 1103: Where’s Brother Hu? Didn’t we hear so many gunshots in the building just now?
No one answered. Basically, all the survivors in the building had run to watch Bai Li kill zombies.
A few people were still too shocked to speak at first. They had already heard the gunshots earlier, and many of them had assumed something terrible had happened to Bai Li. Some had even whispered that she might have been shot dead by Hu Xuecheng. Now they were seeing her alive and moving downstairs with that same steady, sharp, unbothered look on her face, and the whole situation felt impossible to them. That was why the chat started filling up so quickly. The longer people stared at the screen, the faster they began to understand that Bai Li was very much alive and very much in control.
Bai Li was killing with great enthusiasm. Wherever she went, there were zombie corpses, like a demon reaping zombie bodies.
Wu Qi 1104: Is she even human? Doesn’t she get tired?
Wang Wuyang 1103: She’s really amazing. Those monsters are really ferocious, but Bai Li doesn’t seem afraid at all.
Xue Yuan 4004: Nonsense, would Bai Li be like you guys? Having Bai Li in our building is a blessing for all of us.
Wang Dong 704: Yes, yes, it has to be Bai Li. We still need Bai Li.
Wang Wen 1104: @Bai Li, could you send some things over? We’re really willing to spend money to buy them. My son really can’t go hungry anymore. You’re a good person, you won’t refuse us, right?
Ye Li 1103: Exactly, Bai Li, you’re the hope of our whole building. If you can really help everyone, everyone will be grateful to you, @Bai Li.
Zhang Ming 2001: @Bai Li, Sister Lin, your cigarettes and food, the price is negotiable, you can have as much as you want. If it’s not enough, I have gold bars at home, I’ll give them all to you. Please send me some supplies.
Wang Zhichao 203: Yes, Bai Li, do you still remember me? I’m the security guard in our community. You helped me out last time by letting the truck into the community to deliver supplies. People should reciprocate, so please help me out this time.
...
In dangerous situations, once people grasp at a sliver of hope, it’s like grasping a lifeline. Clearly, seeing that Bai Li was still safe and sound, and that Hu Xuecheng was no longer talking in the group chat, these people immediately changed their tune, trying to get something from Bai Li. After all, Bai Li was an ordinary person before the monsters appeared, much easier to talk to than Hu Xuecheng. The difference was obvious to everyone. Hu Xuecheng had always acted like he was above the building, like nobody else was worth speaking to unless it benefited him. Bai Li was different. She was the kind of person people felt they could actually speak to, even if they had never been close to her before. That made her easier to target for requests, but it also made her easier to trust. In the middle of fear, people always went toward the person who felt the least impossible.
The chat kept going in that same messy direction. One person asked if Bai Li had extra food. Another asked whether she could send up bottled water. Someone else tried to sound polite while asking for cigarettes. A woman in one apartment mentioned her child had not eaten enough in two days. Another resident said he would pay any price. Another said he had gold bars at home and would trade them all if Bai Li could just send a little supply. It was a familiar kind of panic now, the kind that made people forget pride very fast. Nobody wanted to be the one left out if Bai Li really was the person who could keep the building from collapsing into total chaos. So they reached for her through the group chat, one after another, each message a little more desperate than the last.
Bai Li killed for a while, then felt a little tired and slowly walked towards the small supermarket. This area of zombies had been wiped out, but zombies were still pouring into the community courtyard from outside.
