Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]
Chapter 266: In action. The kindness she gave did not make a lot of noise. It came out in little actions, like bending down to talk to a child, like setting aside food, like remembering the fridge space, like planning a room in advance so the family would not feel uncomfortable. That kind of care was often more believable than loud affection. It slipped in quietly and stayed.
LiLi, after hugging the dinosaur for a while, suddenly asked whether the new house had a place for her toys and whether she could sleep next to Auntie. Bai Li answered with a smile that the room was big enough and that they could figure out the arrangement after moving. The little girl took that as a promise and immediately smiled so brightly that her cheeks rounded out. She turned around and showed the dinosaur to Yan Laojin, then to her mother, as if she wanted everyone to know how happy she was. Yan Cijin looked at her daughter, then at Bai Li, and the corner of her mouth lifted before she could stop it.
Seeing the child happy made the adults move more smoothly too. Yan Laojin finished packing the small daily things, Bai Li gathered the useful items near the door, and Yan Cijin packed her own clothes into a bag and zipped it up carefully. The room no longer felt like a home that was about to be abandoned. It felt like a place in transition, which somehow made it easier to leave. Bai Li checked the time and realized they still had enough daylight if they left soon. She told the others that it would be better to go now, bring the first batch over, and then come back for the remaining things later. Yan Cijin agreed immediately. There was no need to drag her feet.
The moment the plan became clear, the little girl became even more energetic. She kept hopping in place and saying she wanted to see Auntie’s house right away. Yan Laojin had to hold her by the shoulder so she would not trip over her own excitement. Bai Li smiled and told her that they would go soon enough, and that she should carry her dinosaur properly or it would get jealous if it was dropped. LiLi looked shocked at the possibility of making the plush jealous and held it tighter. Yan Cijin nearly laughed at the seriousness on her daughter’s face. Even now, the little girl was still thinking in the most innocent way possible. That innocence was one of the few things Yan Cijin wanted to keep protecting with everything she had.
Yan Cijin walked over to the fridge one more time to check the food Bai Li had placed there. It was a small gesture, but it made her feel more grounded. The shelves were already fuller than before, and the cold air hit her hand when she opened the door. That little burst of chill somehow made the situation feel real. Bai Li was actually helping them move. Bai Li was actually sharing supplies. Bai Li was actually making space for them in her home. Yan Cijin closed the fridge again and pressed her fingers lightly against the door for a moment, then let go. She did not know why her heart kept beating so fast. It should have settled by now, but it refused to.
Maybe it was because this was the first time someone had looked at her household and said, in such a casual way, that they could just move in and live together for a while. Bai Li did not make it sound heavy or difficult. She made it sound like a simple adjustment. That ease was what made it dangerous. Yan Cijin had always been good at noticing danger. She could tell when a situation was unstable. But Bai Li’s calm made her guard slip a little, and that was where the emotional trouble started. She had to keep reminding herself that this was still only an agreement based on survival. Yet the feelings under it were growing too quickly to ignore.
Bai Li, on the other hand, was still mostly thinking about the room layout. She remembered the 1.8 meter bed and felt that it would be enough for them to sleep comfortably if arranged properly. There was room in the study for the smaller things, and if she shifted some boxes into the living room, the main room would become much more open. The only issue was time. She would need to move things carefully, sort the supplies by category, and make sure anything fragile was placed somewhere safe. She was already planning where the child’s toys would go, where the medicine should be kept, and which cabinet could hold the daily items. It was all very natural to her. Organization was something she could do without thinking too hard.
Yan Cijin saw that Bai Li was already mentally mapping out the new arrangement and felt even more at ease, though a little embarrassed at how much relief she got from that. It was ridiculous, really. She had not even moved yet, and she was already relying on Bai Li’s decisions. But there was something about Bai Li that made dependence feel less heavy. Maybe it was because Bai Li never acted like she was doing anyone a favor. She just handled things. She did not push people into gratitude. She simply made life easier, then left the other person to decide how to respond. That made Yan Cijin feel both thankful and slightly helpless.
As the packing went on, Bai Li noticed the small strange expression on Yan Cijin’s face a few times, but she never managed to guess the real reason. She thought Yan Cijin was probably worried about the move, or maybe shy about staying somewhere new. Bai Li understood that kind of discomfort. She was not going to make it harder by asking too many questions. Instead, she kept the tone light and practical.
