Surviving the Infinite Survival Game by Exploiting Glitches
Chapter 9: Finding a Water Source["Your Shelter doesn’t have any space for planting, does it?"] the System reminded her slyly.
Lin Yun: "I can spend points to expand it."
The System fell silent. As long as she was willing to spend the points, that was fine.
Lin Yun had Ghost Vine make her a vine basket, then dug up the Star Tea Tree along with the soil around its roots and placed it in the basket. When she went to the city later, she would look for flower pots or something similar and bring a few back.
She was afraid that putting the Star Tea Tree into her inventory would cause it to wither, so she decided to leave it here for now and pick it up on her way back.
Lin Yun continued forward, but she didn’t encounter any particularly special plants for the rest of the journey.
There were hardly any edible plants left. The ground was covered with all kinds of unfamiliar weeds.
She did, however, discover a type of weed with long, slender leaves. The plant was quite tough and could be used for weaving after being dried.
However, Lin Yun didn’t really need it. With Ghost Vine around, she wasn’t lacking in materials for weaving.
As she walked, Lin Yun carefully observed the surrounding vegetation. She hadn’t forgotten her most important task for the day: finding a water source.
Ghost Vine, perched on her shoulder, hadn’t noticed anything unusual nearby and was beginning to feel bored. It even started boldly trying to climb onto Lin Yun’s head.
It secretly grabbed onto her hair and used it to climb upward while keeping an eye on her expression.
Seeing that Lin Yun was focused on finding a water source, Ghost Vine gradually grew bolder.
Lin Yun could only sigh silently. It really was still a baby vine.
However, she soon didn’t have the time to worry about it anymore. She noticed that the ground ahead looked somewhat damp.
She immediately quickened her pace while remaining vigilant and carefully observing her surroundings. In a forest, animals usually gathered around any available water source to drink, so she had to be careful. She couldn’t afford to provoke anything right now.
She pressed her foot against the damp ground, confirming that there was indeed a water source nearby.
Taking several Exploding Sunflower Seeds from her backpack and holding them tightly in one hand, Lin Yun continued searching cautiously.
Just then, a giant rabbit suddenly dashed out of the bushes nearby.
The moment it emerged, it almost ran straight into Lin Yun. It hurriedly slammed on the brakes, and for a moment, both sides froze in place.
Ghost Vine was the first to break the awkward silence.
"Rabbit! Food!"
But the rabbit was faster. It immediately turned around and fled back into the bushes, disappearing in the blink of an eye.
Lin Yun: "...?"
What had that brief flash of information said just now?
Ghost Vine cursed under its breath. The food that had practically been delivered to its mouth had just gotten away!
How annoying!
Lin Yun didn’t pay much attention to the little incident. She had just heard the faint sound of flowing water. Although it wasn’t loud, the water source was clearly nearby.
After walking back and forth for a while, Lin Yun finally found a small stream hidden in the forest.
The stream wasn’t very large, but the water was clean and clear.
There were no animals drinking from it at the moment, so it seemed relatively safe.
"System, I’ve found a water source. Help me store it."
["Water storage system activated. Please wait patiently while the water is being stored."]
Lin Yun wasn’t idle either. She quickly squatted down and washed her dirty hands. Then, she took off her jacket, put everything from its pockets into her backpack, and washed the jacket as well.
At the same time, she didn’t forget to grab the "show-off" Ghost Vine ball from her head and rinse it in the water.
As a result, quite a bit of muddy water was washed out.
Lin Yun’s expression immediately darkened.
Ghost Vine stiffened.
"Oh no, it’s over. Oh, no, I’m going to die..."
"You little rascal! You got yourself covered in mud and still climbed onto my head?" Lin Yun rolled her eyes at it impatiently before letting down her hair to wash it.
Ghost Vine immediately behaved itself. It didn’t dare cause any more trouble and honestly stayed nearby as her bodyguard.
After washing her hair, Lin Yun could only tie her wet hair back.
The System hadn’t finished storing the water yet, so Lin Yun stood up and looked around. There were plenty of plants nearby, and she wanted to see if there was anything useful.
["Sprout Greens: The tender leaves are edible. Older leaves contain mild toxins."]
["Grind-Root Grass: Non-toxic. Its roots can be ground into powder and eaten. The leaves taste bitter and are unpalatable. Consumption is not recommended."]
Lin Yun’s eyes lit up.
"Food! It’s all food!"
She hurriedly took out the Vajra Ant Leg Bone and began digging up the Grind-Root Grass. Although it wasn’t a convenient tool, it was better than nothing.
This also strengthened her determination to visit the city and stock up on supplies. She felt like she was lacking everything right now: pots, bowls, ladles, basins for cooking, and all kinds of tools.
She couldn’t think about it anymore. The moment she started thinking, she realized there were even more things she needed.
Soon, the root of the Grind-Root Grass was exposed. Lin Yun put down the Vajra Ant Leg Bone, dug around the root with her bare hands, and pulled it out.
The root wasn’t very long, only about the length of her palm. It looked somewhat like a yam, but it clearly wasn’t one.
She picked a large leaf from a nearby plant, wrapped the Grind-Root Grass root in it, and stuffed it into her backpack.
She decided to come back and dig up more of these after returning from the city. Using the Vajra Ant Leg Bone was too inconvenient and slow.
["Water storage complete. The Shelter’s water storage tank is full."]
["Would you like to purify the water? Purification costs 5 points."]
"Go ahead and deduct the points."
Lin Yun was impressed by this System. It could deduct points for practically everything.
Still, these five points were worth it.
["Points deducted. Beginning water purification... Water purification complete."]
["Host, those five points weren’t deducted for nothing. The water has now been purified to a level suitable for direct consumption. Moreover, as long as the water source isn’t moderately polluted or worse, five points are enough to purify it into water that can be consumed directly."]
"There’s such a good function?"
["Of course. We are the noble System."]
"..."
Lin Yun checked the time. It was already past five, almost six in the afternoon.
Finding the water source had taken quite some time, and storing the water had taken another hour or two. She needed to hurry back now.
The trees here were simply too tall. Although it wasn’t dark outside yet, the interior of the forest was already growing dim. If she didn’t leave soon, she would have to make her way back in the dark.
Lin Yun hurried along the path she had taken earlier. She found the Star Tea Tree she had dug up and had Ghost Vine help carry it. Only then did she bring the tree with her and make her way back to the Shelter.
By the time she stepped inside, it was already very dark outside.
The towering trees blocked the last rays of the setting sun, and no light could penetrate the dense canopy of branches and leaves.
Once the sun completely disappeared, the animals hidden within the forest began emerging in search of food.
A huge feline was leaping through the forest when it suddenly caught a scent that didn’t belong there.
It narrowed its eyes, followed the unfamiliar scent, and arrived at the edge of Ghost Vine’s territory.
"Tsk, why does it have to be this guy’s territory?"
"Why has this guy’s color changed? Isn’t it usually pitch-black?"
It lowered its head and sniffed Ghost Vine’s scent.
The scent was exactly the same as before.
It was definitely Ghost Vine.
