Chapter 164: Chapter 164: Twin daughters

Then she noticed something else.

The smile faded.

He had been quiet all evening.

Too quiet.

She walked over and sat beside him.

"What is it?"

"Nothing."

"Everyone in this family needs a new lie."

He almost smiled.

Almost.

Swanly nudged his shoulder.

"Talk."

Kael stared at the blade.

For a long moment, nothing.

Then:

"I was terrified today."

Swanly softened.

"I know."

"No."

His voice dropped.

"You do not."

He set the blade aside.

"I keep thinking I am accepting things."

Swanly went still.

"Soren."

His jaw tightened.

"Yes."

She waited.

"I know females can have several mates."

Kael’s fingers curled.

"I knew that before you changed."

Before she became this Swanly.

"But knowing something..."

His voice roughened.

"...and surviving it inside your chest are different things."

Swanly did not interrupt.

Kael finally looked at her.

"I spent years wanting you to look at me."

Her chest hurt.

"Then you did."

His eyes shone.

"You loved the cubs."

He swallowed.

"You laughed with me."

His voice cracked slightly.

"And just when I thought..."

He stopped.

Swanly touched his hand.

"When you thought what?"

"That maybe I finally had the life I kept wanting."

Silence.

"Then Soren came."

Swanly’s throat tightened.

Kael looked down.

"And now you carry his young."

He immediately added:

"I do not hate them."

"I know."

"I already love them because they are yours."

That nearly broke her.

"But sometimes..."

His hand trembled beneath hers.

"...I wonder how many males will come after him."

Swanly said nothing.

"How many marks."

His golden eyes lifted.

"How many beds."

"How many times I will have to tell myself that sharing you does not mean losing you."

Swanly’s eyes burned.

Kael smiled.

It was a terrible smile.

Small.

Sad.

"Will I become the male you loved first and forgot last?"

That one hurt.

Deep.

Swanly stared at him.

"No."

Kael’s eyes lowered.

She touched his cheek.

"I cannot promise you that nothing will ever change."

He looked at her.

"I cannot promise that this family will always be simple."

Her thumb brushed beneath his eye.

"But you are not something another male can replace."

Kael’s breath caught.

"You are Kael."

Her forehead touched his.

"You are the father of my boys."

His eyes closed.

"You were beside me when I knew nothing about this world."

She smiled faintly.

"You annoyed me."

His lips twitched.

"You still annoy me."

That actually made him laugh.

Quiet.

Wet.

Swanly wrapped both arms around him.

"You are not a space someone else fills."

Kael held her.

Carefully because of her stomach.

Desperately because of everything else.

"I choose you because you are you."

His face buried against her neck.

For the first time since Soren had marked her, something inside Kael loosened.

Not everything.

The pain was still there.

Fear too.

But this time...

He believed her.

At least a little.

...

The next morning, Soren became ridiculous.

Swanly woke to find him staring at her stomach.

She blinked.

"Soren."

Nothing.

"Soren."

His hand rested lightly against the curve.

"What are you doing?"

"Listening."

"With your hand?"

"Yes."

"That is not how listening works."

"It is for me."

Swanly stared.

The babies moved faintly beneath the mating bond.

Soren’s eyes sharpened.

"One is awake."

Swanly laughed.

"You cannot know that."

"I do."

A basket fell outside.

BANG!

Swanly startled.

Soren hissed so violently the person outside froze.

Raku’s voice came:

"It was a root."

Soren glared toward the entrance.

"Drop it quieter."

Silence.

Raku slowly replied:

"I will discuss that with the root."

Swanly covered her face.

"Soren."

"What?"

"You cannot threaten vegetables."

"I threatened Raku."

"Much better."

His attention returned to her stomach.

Then:

Kick.

Soren froze.

Swanly gasped.

Another tiny kick pressed directly beneath his hand.

His expression changed.

Offense.

Genuine offense.

Swanly stared.

"What?"

Soren looked at her stomach.

Then at her.

"They struck me."

Swanly’s mouth fell open.

Then she exploded.

Laughter ripped out of her.

"They KICKED YOU!"

"They struck me."

"They are inside my body!"

"That does not excuse violence."

Swanly was crying now.

Actually crying from laughter.

Another kick.

Soren’s eyes widened.

"They did it again."

That made Swanly laugh harder.

Miko ran inside.

"What happen?!"

"Your sister is beating Snake Papa!"

Miko stopped.

His eyes became enormous.

Then he threw both arms up.

"BABY STRONG!"

Soren looked deeply betrayed by his own family.

...

A few minutes later, the system appeared.

{Host.}

Swanly was still wiping tears from her face.

What?

The tiny fairy looked smug.

{Pregnancy development scan has reached sufficient accuracy.}

Swanly immediately stopped laughing.

What does that mean?

{This system can now confirm number and sex.}

Her heart jumped.

Soren looked at her.

"You are staring at your magic again."

"Quiet."

The system lifted two tiny fingers.

{Two young.}

Swanly froze.

Two.

She knew there might be more than one.

But hearing it confirmed was different.

Two?

{Twins.}

Her knees weakened.

Soren caught her arm immediately.

"Swanly?"

The fairy smiled.

{Both female.}

Swanly’s brain stopped.

Girls.

Two girls.

Twin daughters.

"Oh my God."

Kael entered.

"What?"

Swanly looked at him.

Then Soren.

Then three cubs who had somehow appeared behind Kael like summoned demons.

"Girls."

Silence.

Kairo blinked.

"What?"

"Two babies."

She touched her stomach.

"Both girls."

Absolute chaos.

Kairo stood straight.

"I protect both."

"You already protect everyone."

"Need more protect."

Nilo immediately looked toward the sleeping hollow.

"We need space."

He ran.

Swanly blinked.

"Where is he going?"

"To rearrange their beds," Kael said.

Of course.

Miko disappeared too.

Swanly became suspicious.

Very suspicious.

"Miko?"

No answer.

"Miko!"

He returned carrying rocks.

Several.

He placed them carefully beside Swanly’s sleeping space.

Swanly stared.

"What are those?"

"Baby toys."

Silence.

"They are rocks."

Miko nodded proudly.

"Good rocks."

Lumi appeared behind him.

Her rabbit ears shot upright.

"Babies cannot play rocks!"

Miko spun.

"Yes can."

"No!"

"Good rocks!"

"They babies!"

"Babies need rocks."

"For what?!"

Miko picked up the smoothest one.

"Hold."

"They cannot hold!"

"They learn."

Lumi grabbed the rock.

"No."

Miko grabbed the other side.

"Yes!"

"No!"

"Yes!"

Kairo came running back.

"Do not fight near sisters!"

"They not born!" Lumi shouted.

"Still hear!"

Nilo appeared carrying folded hides.

"Move. Baby sleeping place."

Miko refused to release the rock.

Lumi refused too.

Swanly sat in the middle of the chaos with both hands over her stomach.

Two daughters.

Three ridiculous sons.

One furious rabbit girl.

Two impossible mates.

And apparently a collection of premium baby rocks.

She started laughing again.

Miko stopped fighting long enough to look at her.

"Mama happy?"

Swanly wiped her eyes.

"Yes."

He beamed.

Then shoved the rock toward her stomach.

"Tell babies Miko got best toys."

Swanly looked at the stone.

Then at him.

"We are going to have a very serious conversation about what babies can safely play with."

Miko’s face fell.

"Rock safe."

Lumi screamed:

"NO!"

And somewhere inside Swanly’s stomach, one tiny girl kicked.

Miko gasped.

"SEE?! SHE WANT ROCK!"
