Swordsmanship Coach: Kill with One Slash
Chapter 137 - 118: Prelude to Slaughter (Part 2)Chapter 137: Chapter 118: Prelude to Slaughter (Part 2)
...
On the outskirts of Cang City, in the middle of a barren desert.
This was the most desolate area of Cang City. The afforestation project had yet to reach this far, leaving nothing but rolling dunes of yellow sand.
Atop one of the dunes, a group of people in the uniform of the Spiritual Sect lay sprawled out. One hand held a bottle of ice-cold mineral water, the other scrolled through the latest news on a phone. The binoculars, however, were tossed aside, completely ignored.
They were the lowest-ranking followers in the Spiritual Sect. Most had only just obtained their Sequence, and Tier Two Sequencers were few and far between.
However, their one virtue was their unwavering loyalty, which was why Vice Bishop Jie had assigned them here to guard an abandoned military base behind them.
Although the military base was abandoned, its location was extremely well-hidden and easy to defend, so Vice Bishop Jie had repurposed it as a research institute.
The research institute operated around the clock, but no one was ever seen coming or going. Barring some unforeseen accident, it was highly unlikely anyone would stumble upon this place.
It was no wonder these Spiritualist Followers had tossed their binoculars aside. There was simply no one to see.
"Hey, what do you guys think they’re researching in that base behind us?"
A man who looked to be in his early thirties, lying next to his comrades, propped his head on his right hand and asked curiously.
He was the strongest in this group of Spiritualist Followers, possessing the power of a Tier Two Sequence. His Sequence’s ability was also quite impressive.
So when the other followers heard him speak, they all started chiming in with their own guesses, trying to get a word in and make a good impression.
But none of their theories interested him in the slightest. That was, until a man who rarely spoke suddenly said, "A couple of days ago, I noticed that ’Curse’ seems to have moved into the military base."
"Curse?"
Many of the Spiritualist Followers were taken aback; they had never heard that name before. Only the Tier Two Sequencer froze for a moment before speaking:
"You mean the Vice Bishop’s most loyal subordinate is here?"
"What’s he doing here?"
The others listened to their exchange, completely baffled, with no idea who they were talking about.
The Spiritual Sect had lost many of its high-ranking members. The ranks of Priests and High Priests had been all but wiped out. This allowed ordinary followers to come into contact with figures on the level of a Vice Bishop—something that would have been unthinkable before.
Even so,
"Curse" was not someone most of the people here could ever hope to meet.
He was Vice Bishop Jie’s most loyal dog, his identity shrouded in mystery. He considered himself Jie’s shadow, handling incidents that the Vice Bishop couldn’t be bothered with or couldn’t deal with himself.
Curse’s appearance here meant there was someone Vice Bishop Jie wanted to eliminate, or a mission that needed to be completed.
The Tier Two Sequencer’s mind raced, and his expression soured. He muttered under his breath,
"Fuck, don’t tell me they’re going to use us as cannon fodder again."
It was no wonder he thought that way.
His girlfriend and best friend had both died at the Dragon Heaven Building.
The incident had made him realize just how dangerous it was to follow the Spiritual Church. To be honest, the thought of leaving the Spiritual Sect and returning to a normal life had crossed his mind more than once.
But any fool knew that once you joined, you could never leave—especially now that he was a Tier Two Sequencer. He had no choice but to bury such thoughts deep in his heart.
Just as he was thinking this,
a sudden Gale blasted toward them from a distance. The wind was so strong that it pushed them back several meters, even as they lay flat on the ground.
Many of them cried out in pain as the wind-whipped sand flew into their eyes.
"Boss, this wind isn’t right!"
The man who had told him about Curse’s arrival at the military base suddenly shouted, pointing in a specific direction.
The Tier Two Sequencer immediately looked where he was pointing. He then saw a swirling cloud of yellow sand suspended in the air, as if being pushed forward by an invisible person charging in their direction.
"What the hell is that? A sandstorm? Can a sandstorm even take that shape?"
The Tier Two Sequencer muttered in confusion. He had been stationed here for a while but had never seen a sandstorm like this. It looked as if it were wrapped around a person. The other Spiritualist Followers, having never seen such a sight, all stared in bewilderment.
"It’s fine. It’s just a small sandstorm. We’re all Sequencers, we just need to lie low for a bit."
He observed it for a moment. Although the sandstorm was heading their way and had a strange shape, it wasn’t very large. ’What’s the worst it could do to us?’ he thought, then said aloud:
"Let’s just go back to guessing what the research institute is studying."
"N-no... That’s not right, Boss! That’s a person! It’s a person!!!" a man who had been staring intently at the sand suddenly exclaimed.
"A person? What the fuck are you talking about?"
The Tier Two Sequencer was stunned for a second, then became annoyed.
He had been staring at that sandstorm for a good while. Its shape was strange, sure, but there was no way it was a person. ’If it were a person, why would they be invisible? Why can’t I see them?’
’Even if it’s an invisible Sequencer, that doesn’t make sense either. I can’t detect the slightest fluctuation of Sequence energy, and I’m a Tier Two, for crying out loud. Is he taking me for an idiot?’
