Chapter 239 - 165: 9 Nether Bird (Part 2)

Chapter 239: Chapter 165: 9 Nether Bird (Part 2)

A black bird stood silently atop a massive boulder. Its beak was slightly agape, and a ball of purple flame materialized beside it as a pleasant, mature female voice slowly drifted out.

"Nine Nether, you’re being too simplistic."

"After the Spiritual Qi resurgence, humanity has gone through a great deal. They’re all over the globe now. What place is left for monsters like us?"

"If we want to get out..."

"...it all comes down to who has the bigger fist."

"As long as our fists are big enough, we can go wherever we want and do whatever we want. Just like those ancient Government Offices—didn’t they all piss themselves in fear at the sight of us?"

A crimson-gold scorpion, sprawled on the ground, repeatedly opened and closed its mandibles, emitting a "SKREEE-KRAK" sound, but all the beasts present understood its meaning.

The five spiritual beasts had all stated their opinions, but Nine Nether just frowned, feeling more than a little displeased.

She didn’t quite agree with the Golden Scorpion’s words.

’Although most humans are detestable, they aren’t idiots. On the contrary, they’re smarter than most spiritual beasts. Given that they share a common interest, Nine Nether couldn’t understand why they couldn’t cooperate with humans.’

However, the other three spiritual beasts were more in agreement with the Golden Scorpion, so Nine Nether didn’t say anything.

After all,

it wouldn’t have changed a thing.

’Besides, creatures like Sequence Beasts are especially fond of devouring Sequencers.’

’Apparently,’

’the most popular cultivation system in the mortal world was no longer that of the Martial Artist,’

’but had instead become that of Sequencers.’

’In that case, a creature like the Sequence Beast was practically a public enemy to humanity in this day and age. It would naturally never agree to cooperate with humans.’

’Who would agree,’

’to cooperate with their own food?’

"If we’re not cooperating, then what do you suggest we do about them? Surely you don’t want to stay trapped here for another few hundred years, or even longer?"

Nine Nether asked, her voice laced with helplessness.

She held no great affection for humans, but no particular animosity either. She simply wanted to leave this damned place.

The other four spiritual beasts were originally native inhabitants from the area around the Spirit Sect. Even when they were swallowed by the Spirit Realm, they were neighbors, their entire clans having been brought in together.

But,

she was different.

She was lonelier than the other beasts.

Because,

she didn’t originally belong here.

She had once lived in the distant Land of the Nine Netherworld, a place that teemed with a special type of bird: the Nine Nether Bird, which was her true form.

As a Nine Nether Bird, she was born with immense power. During a long voyage across the ocean, she was unexpectedly devoured by the expanding Spirit Realm and ended up here.

Therefore,

she was the one who most wanted to leave.

Although,

through certain means,

she had learned that the mortal world had undergone earth-shattering changes.

Because,

the course of history could not be changed,

many places were completely different now.

She couldn’t even find out what her homeland, the Land of the Nine Netherworld, was called now, or if her clan still existed. But those were questions she would have to consider after she got out.

Faced with Nine Nether’s challenge, the beasts all fell into deep thought, for none of them could ignore a query from a Nine Nether Bird.

Although the King of Sequence Beasts was exceptionally gifted and had become the strongest spiritual beast here, the racial talents of the Nine Nether Bird were still terrifying.

They commanded Nirvana and an ability called Undying Fire—a purple flame that could burn a being clean away, from their body right down to their soul.

Even these Beast Kings,

would not carelessly provoke this visitor from beyond the heavens.

The taste of the Undying Fire,

was not something many beasts were eager to sample.

"Uhh..."

"We could just fight our way out and challenge that old geezer one-on-one. As long as we take him out, the others will be easy to deal with."

One of the beasts thought for a long while, only to utter something rather laughable. Before anyone else could object, he realized how stupid it sounded and immediately fell silent.

"I believe..."

"Since everyone thinks the idea of cooperating with humans to deal with the Spirit Sect is a bad one, we could try contacting those two from the Spirit Sect."

the Golden Scorpion suddenly said.

"..."

The other beasts did not react well.

In fact, one of them said directly:

"If you want to get yourself killed, don’t drag us down with you! Aren’t those two from the Spirit Sect human as well? Why should we get involved in a human civil war? Besides, those two are clearly about to lose."

"They had so many people originally, but now they’ve all died off until only two are left."

"Indeed..."

The King of Sequence Beasts chimed in, also disagreeing with the idea of allying with the Spirit Sect. The two from the Spirit Sect were already showing clear signs of defeat, with no chance of a comeback in sight.

The Golden Scorpion was silent for a moment, then asked, "Have you heard of the Celestial Race?"

"The Celestial Race?"

The other spiritual beasts were stunned for a moment.

The Celestial Race and Celestial Beings were one and the same. It’s just that spiritual beasts, with their innate disgust for humanity, refused to call the powerful race by a name that associated them with humans.

As for humans, they called the Celestial Race "Celestial Beings" simply because they looked exactly like people. In reality, it was hard to call the Celestial Race "human."

Because,

they were born powerful.

The vast majority of the Celestial Race were born with power at the fifth rank or higher.

They didn’t need to cultivate painstakingly like humans, for whom reaching the fifth rank was a feat managed by a rare few.

Beyond that,

the lifespan of the Celestial Race was immense.

Compared to humans, the difference was as vast as that between an ancient tortoise and a tiny insect.

Most importantly...

Their energy and blood could cause other life forms to evolve and other cultivation systems to advance.

The Celestial Race...

...seemed to truly be the favored children of the heavens.

But,

these very same favored children of the heavens,

had done something unknown long ago, and in the end, were struck down by divine punishment from the heavens. They were sealed away in the Celestial Human Tomb and had never been seen since.

Spiritual beasts,

for the most part, have long lifespans.

Living for a thousand years is not an issue.

Even the Beast Kings here were of a younger generation, but their elders had, at one point or another, told them the legends of the Celestial Race.

In truth, the era of the Celestial Race was incredibly ancient, far older than the Shang and Zhou dynasties recorded in human history.

For such a being,

to be suddenly brought up by the Golden Scorpion,

left many of the spiritual beasts rather bewildered.

The Golden Scorpion had no intention of being secretive. Seeing that everyone knew of the Celestial Beings’ existence, it said very seriously:

"The Spirit Sect is very likely connected to the Celestial Race."

"..."

"Are you bullshitting?"

the Nine Nether Bird couldn’t help but retort.

The Nine Nether Bird was a very noble type of spiritual beast, so her lifespan far exceeded that of the ordinary spiritual beasts around her. Even so, there weren’t many records of the Celestial Race within her clan, which only went to show how truly ancient they were.

For something from so long ago to suddenly be linked with the Spirit Sect—it truly made her feel like this was all just bullshit.

The Nine Nether Bird’s words,

were incredibly blunt,

but the others all shared her sentiment.

Only the Golden Scorpion said faintly, "I once felt an energy within the Spirit Sect, due to an accident, that was similar to what is described in the records. If you don’t believe me, you can go and test it for yourselves."

"If..."

"I’m just saying, if..."

"If the Spirit Sect really is connected to the Celestial Race, then choosing to ally with them is absolutely the right choice."

As the Golden Scorpion’s words fell,

the other spiritual beasts all looked at each other.

The Golden Scorpion’s claim was simply too difficult to verify, and moreover, none of the beasts knew how to determine if it was lying.

Until Nine Nether suddenly said, "How about this: give me some time. I’ll go to the Spirit Sect to investigate. We can figure out what to do next after I return."

The Nine Nether Bird,

was small in stature but immensely powerful. Most importantly, she was essentially immortal; even if she were discovered, it wouldn’t be a major issue.

Considering her origins,

and her goal of leaving the Spirit Realm,

she was indeed the most suitable candidate among the beasts for this venture.

And so,

the beasts all agreed to the plan.

...

Outside the Spirit Realm, in Su Yu’s room, Su Xing was preparing for his next breakthrough.
