Chapter 270: Chapter 181: Change

"She was replaced by someone else?"

Su Xing was stunned. A myriad of possibilities flashed through his mind, but without a doubt, anyone capable of such a feat had to be an extraordinary individual.

In the mortal world,

’When did someone like that appear?’

"Tell me in detail."

Su Xing’s curiosity was piqued.

At this stage, the appearance of any new character could affect the development of the future script. He had to find this person and, at the very least, figure out which side they were on.

"Well..."

"It started one day when she suddenly took a leave of absence."

Lu Anning pressed her thumb tightly against her index finger knuckle, causing it to turn white. Her eyes gazed into the distance, lost in memory. About a minute passed before she sent another voice message.

At first,

when she suggested going somewhere for a trip,

many of her friends were supportive. Her mental state was clearly not good, so even her teacher approved her request for leave.

Of course,

she invited other classmates to go with her,

but school had already started. Everyone was in the thick of their senior year, so the other students all turned down her proposal.

The Summer Resort was located deep in the mountains,

with travel to and from arranged exclusively by a tour company’s bus service.

If

she wanted to go alone,

the cost would have been quite prohibitive.

Lu Anning had originally agreed to go with her, but during that time, Lu Anning and Su Xing were discovering a whole new world together, so she had neglected her old friendships somewhat.

This made her feel a little guilty.

Fortunately,

her family was well-off.

Since she had her teacher’s permission, her parents also approved and even arranged for a few relatives to accompany her on the trip.

She originally wanted to refuse,

because she wasn’t very close with these relatives.

She worried that if "that kind of thing" happened again, she wouldn’t be able to react in time, especially since they didn’t really know each other. However, the whole affair with the resort was already strange, so she couldn’t bring herself to refuse outright and ended up agreeing.

When they first arrived at the resort, everyone was eating well and having fun, and she didn’t notice anything out of place. Even though it was a weekday, the resort was still bustling with visitors, which gave her a strong sense of security.

But,

that sense of security was shattered two days later.

Because

she sensed that someone had changed again.

Even though they were still strangers, two days of interaction was enough to form some initial impressions. While these impressions weren’t deep, they were just enough for her to notice the discrepancies.

Not only that,

she had come with the intention to investigate,

so she often struck up conversations with strangers, making new friends. In doing so, she learned from them and their concerns that her group was far from the only one experiencing these changes.

Many people,

and the number was still growing.

Upon learning this, she must have been overwhelmed with thoughts, and in the end, an unbelievable terror began to creep into her heart.

’Watching the familiar, the newly acquainted, and the strange—everyone, bit by bit, turning into someone else. Does that mean my turn is coming soon?’

’Or maybe,’

’I’ve already changed,’

’and I just don’t know it yet?’

’Can the memories in my own mind even be trusted?’

A wordless terror

instantly filled her mind.

It made her immediately abandon any thought of further investigation. She scrambled to contact the tour company to arrange for a vehicle to take her away from the resort.

However,

in such a remote, mountainous area,

every bus ran on a fixed schedule.

They wouldn’t add an extra bus just for a customer’s last-minute request, which meant the earliest she could leave the Summer Resort was the next day.

But

fear doesn’t wait.

To escape her terror, she was too scared to sleep alone that night, so she asked her cousin—one she believed hadn’t changed yet—to stay with her.

That night, she even tried to earnestly persuade her cousin to leave with her.

But

they had only been on the trip for two or three days,

and it was a rare chance to get away for free without having to go back to school.

What student could resist that temptation?

So,

her cousin flatly refused.

She just told Lu Anning’s friend to get some rest and not to overthink things.

Late that night,

her dreams were filled with these horrors. She even dreamed that her own parents had turned into completely different people. This shocking nightmare drenched her in a cold sweat, startling her awake.

And then,

when she opened her eyes,

she was horrified to see her cousin standing silently by her bed. She was standing there, completely motionless, like a statue, her eyes narrowed and fixed on her. There was no telling how long she had been watching.

This cousin,

was normally the picture of gentleness and charm.

But now, the expression on her face was one of utter strangeness, something she had never seen before, as if she had completely transformed into a different person. This scene, a nightmare bleeding into reality, filled her with a despair so terrifying it nearly tore her apart.

At that moment,

she was simply too terrified.

She didn’t dare make a single extra move.

She just pulled the covers over her head, forced herself to stay still, and pretended to be asleep.

Fortunately—

if you could even call it that.

Her cousin made no other movements. She just stood there silently. After who knows how long, she finally turned and went back to her own bed.

After something like that happened,
