Chapter 284: Chapter 188: Dusk Crow
The source of the crying was indeed very far away.
The eerie fog seemed to muffle sound. At first, Su Xing and Lu Anning didn’t think much of the crying, but as they began walking, they realized just how far away it was.
Fortunately, the two of them were not ordinary people, so they were able to reach the location after walking for some time.
"Coach Su..."
"Do you feel that?"
Lu Anning asked suddenly as they walked.
"Yeah, I feel it. You should be careful too." Su Xing knew exactly what she was referring to.
From the very beginning, Su Xing had clearly felt a pervasive sense of threat when he first entered.
But as Su Xing walked on, he hadn’t encountered any threats, let alone seen a single living person. Only now were they finally heading toward a place where someone might be.
Just a moment ago, he had suddenly realized the source of this threatening feeling.
It wasn’t coming from anywhere else—
it was right here, in the omnipresent fog.
This fog,
strictly speaking, wasn’t composed of water vapor.
Instead, it was a concentration of a special kind of energy.
Inhaling too much of it could alter your memories and habits, starting with the smallest details, until you became a completely different person.
Of course, it was ultimately just a form of energy, so it didn’t have much of an effect on Extraordinary Beings. As soon as Su Xing and Lu Anning sensed its presence, they immediately shielded themselves from it and were thus completely unaffected.
"Of course."
Just as Lu Anning finished speaking, she spotted the faint outline of a white car in the distance. Not knowing much about cars, she simply pointed and said:
"Coach Su."
"There’s a white car over there."
Not far away,
a white SUV lay upside down. Beside it were the bodies of a man and a woman, both looking mangled and showing signs of a struggle. Next to the bodies, a little girl sat, crying her heart out.
’A family of three?’
Su Xing murmured to himself.
His gaze followed the tire tracks down the slope, revealing a distinct dark trail. The car had clearly rolled straight down the mountainside.
While he didn’t know the exact circumstances, it wasn’t hard to imagine an ordinary person encountering such a dense fog, being constantly affected by its energy, and ultimately crashing.
Since there was a survivor,
she was the priority.
Lu Anning didn’t overthink it. She ran straight down the slope to the little girl’s side. The child was crying with her head bowed, covered in a fair amount of blood. She was clearly badly injured.
Initially,
Su Xing wanted to warn Lu Anning to be careful.
’A normal little girl crying this long in the fog must have absorbed a great deal of it. Her personality might have already changed drastically, and there was no telling if she was still safe.’
But,
seeing the little girl’s small frame,
’Even if her mind had been completely taken over by another, she likely wouldn’t pose much of a threat.’
So Su Xing said nothing.
Su Xing followed behind Lu Anning. Perhaps their appearance was too sudden, or maybe the little girl was too lost in her grief, but she hadn’t noticed their approach at all. Startled by the two of them, she jumped and fell back onto her bottom, forgetting even to cry.
"Don’t be afraid, I’m not a bad person."
Lu Anning patted the little girl’s head and asked,
"What’s your name?"
"Why are you here all by yourself?"
Lu Anning’s questions seemed to trigger the little girl’s sorrow. Her tears began to flow uncontrollably again, and through her sobs, she stammered out what had happened.
Through the conversation between Lu Anning and the little girl,
Su Xing also pieced together what had happened.
The little girl’s name was Hanhan, and the bodies on the ground were indeed her parents. The family of three had come to the Summer Resort for a vacation. When they were about to leave, they discovered the dense fog and decided to stay one more day, waiting for it to dissipate.
But,
after only half a day,
Hanhan’s father suddenly changed his mind.
He wanted to leave immediately. Hanhan’s mother, however, was worried that driving on the mountain roads in such a dense fog was too dangerous and could lead to an accident.
According to Hanhan, her father had always been a gentle man. He was a literature teacher at a public middle school and had always carried himself with a scholarly air.
But this time,
her father suddenly started spouting memories that Hanhan didn’t recognize at all. Then, he flew into a rage and beat her mother.
After this outburst,
Hanhan and her mother had no choice but to give in and go home with him.
As a result,
disaster struck.
Hanhan had hit her head during the crash and passed out. When she woke up, she found the scene as it was now, her parents reduced to two cold bodies.
Su Xing used Hanhan’s story to inform his inspection of the car and her parents’ bodies. While he was at it, he also checked Hanhan for any residual energy.
To Su Xing’s surprise, Hanhan hadn’t been affected by this energy at all.
’I’m not sure if it’s because Hanhan is special,’
’or if a child’s personality, not yet fully formed, is simply harder to alter.’
Judging by the crash scene,
Hanhan’s mother had died first. Still angry from the argument with her husband, she had chosen to sit in the back instead of the front passenger seat. She also hadn’t worn her seatbelt. As a result, she was thrown from the vehicle during the crash and killed instantly on impact.
