Chapter 293: Chapter 192: Investigation
Inside the wooden cabin.
Su Xing had a firm grip on the old man’s pale hair, but the man steeled himself. Enduring the excruciating pain radiating from his scalp, he forced his way toward the door.
With a sickening RIP,
a cringeworthy tearing sound instantly rang out.
The old man had actually managed to break free from Su Xing’s grasp by letting his own hair be torn from his scalp, escaping his pursuer.
Although Lu Anning was standing outside the door,
she never expected the old man to be able to break free. Coupled with the fact that the old man’s strength was considerable, she was caught completely off guard. She only snapped back to her senses when she saw him leap onto the eaves of the roof.
"After him!!!"
Lu Anning shouted instinctively.
As far as she knew, there was no telling how many ordinary people were still wandering around inside the Secret Realm. If a monster like this got out, any common person who ran into it would have virtually no chance of survival.
However,
the old man knew perfectly well
that it was impossible for him to escape on his own. If he wanted to get away, there was only one option: take down both Su Xing and Lu Anning at the same time!
Having successfully escaped his attacker’s grasp, the old man immediately leaped onto the eaves of the roof. Then, moving at a speed nearly invisible to the naked eye, he circled the entire cabin, lunged onto a roof beam, and finally pounced on Lu Anning, who was standing off to the side, assuming he would try to flee!
Obviously,
he was no match for Su Xing’s strength, but this little slip of a girl would be much easier to handle.
’If I can just capture her,’
’I might just have a chance to escape with my life.’
As he dove down, his wizened mouth—which looked as if all its teeth had fallen out—suddenly split open, revealing rows upon rows of sharp, dense teeth as he lunged to bite Lu Anning.
BZZZT!
A crimson flying sword instantly tore through the surrounding space and pierced straight through the old man’s pouncing body. The entire cabin shuddered violently from the force of the strike, then collapsed completely.
BOOM!
The wooden cabin was already dilapidated,
and now, it crumbled layer by layer like a tottering tower of blocks, finally breaking into countless fragments that scattered across the ground, completely burying the old man’s body.
As for Lu Anning,
Su Xing had already pulled her to safety.
"This..."
Though it takes time to describe, everything had happened in an instant. Only now did Lu Anning finally realize what had just occurred.
The monster had feigned retreat only to turn back and attack when she let her guard down. If Su Xing hadn’t been right there behind her, she would have fallen for it.
Although
a Tier Four Martial Artist’s Defense Power was extremely high,
if she had been bitten by those foul teeth, she probably would have been seriously injured. Thinking of this, she took a deep breath and asked:
"What should we do now?"
"Dig him out. With his level of strength, getting crushed by some wood shouldn’t do much damage to the body. We might be able to find something on his corpse."
Wasting no time,
Su Xing immediately began to dig through the pile of debris in front of him. Sure enough, the old man’s body was lying inside. His head, however, had been instantly pierced by the Sparrow Sword, and there were no signs of life left.
"Hm?"
Su Xing knelt down. Just as he was about to examine the body, he saw it begin to grow fainter and fainter until it vanished completely.
"What’s going on?"
Su Xing stared at the spot where the old man’s body had just been, lost in thought. A corpse that was clearly dead had suddenly vanished. ’Either I was just fighting an illusion,’ he thought, ’or that old man isn’t dead at all.’
Various thoughts flashed through Su Xing’s mind, but with too little information, he couldn’t make any judgment about the phenomenon. He just walked over to the shattered bronze mirror, touched it, and muttered:
"It’s a real object, all right. Just an ordinary bronze mirror, though. Nothing special about it."
Despite saying that, Su Xing still took a piece of the bronze mirror before he left, planning to show it to the people from the special organization back home.
Then,
Su Xing and Lu Anning left the area,
intending to check out the second location Su Yu had told him about.
The second location was rather strange. It was a place that resembled an altar.
Many ancient memorial tablets were arranged here, likely belonging to the ancestors who once lived in this village. Beside the tablets stood a huge statue.
Of course,
because so much time had passed,
both the tablets and the statue had been so corroded by the ages that their original appearances were completely indiscernible.
Su Xing walked a circle around the area,
and when he got to the back of the statue, he suddenly discovered a pitch-black hole. Based on a visual estimate, the opening was only large enough for a woman’s arm to pass through.
"Hmm..."
Su Xing walked up to the small, dark hole and gestured briefly, confirming that his own arm would never fit. Lu Anning, however, was slimmer; she should have no problem.
At the same time,
Su Xing’s eyesight was excellent.
Although he had only gestured at the opening, he had also gotten a clear look at what was roughly inside: a pile of gold. To be precise, it was a pile of gold bricks.
There was no telling where these gold bricks came from or who put them there, but they were covered in a thick layer of dust. So much so that their golden gleam was barely visible, though a dark handprint could be seen on the surface of one.
