System Mission: Seduce the Final Boss [BL]
Chapter 183: Is that your own thought?"Surprise you...?"
Blake blinked, his brows knitting together in confusion.
"What surprise?"
For a second, Myles simply looked at him.
Then, without saying a word, he slowly lifted one hand and pointed at Blake’s lips.
Silence stretched between the two as Blake stared at the gesture.
’Oh.’
His eyes widened.
"I’ll have you know, that was my first kiss. So be prepared, because from now on, I’ll be the one doing it."
"I’ll wait."
"Ack!"
Blake immediately buried his burning face in both hands.
"I remember now!"
He practically whined into his palms.
’I actually said that...’
His shoulders trembled in pure embarrassment.
’I actually challenged you with that stupidly bold claim.’
Slowly, he lowered his hands just enough to glare at Myles.
"You..."
He reached forward and pinched Myles’ cheek.
"You can really be a pervert sometimes."
"I merely remembered what you said."
"You still remembered!"
"You told me to prepare for it."
Blake’s face somehow became even redder.
"That doesn’t mean you were supposed to bring it up!"
"I was curious."
"About what?!"
"Whether you intended to keep your word."
Blake let out an utterly defeated groan.
"...I wonder why."
He flopped forward until his forehead rested against Myles’ shoulder again.
His ears had turned completely scarlet.
Myles noticed immediately.
"Your face is heating up."
"I know I’m blushing, are you trying to make me feel even more embarrassed?!"
"Your ears are red too."
"I. Know."
"They’re warmer than usual."
Blake resisted the urge to hide under the blanket forever.
"Can you stop analyzing me..."
"I am only making observations."
"You’re secretly such a tease."
His voice became quieter.
"And besides, we’re not even dating. So why are you even talking about kissing..."
His tone carried just the tiniest hint of pettiness.
Not because he truly blamed Myles.
Just... he knew about the seventy-nine favorability now.
He knew what it implied.
But Myles had never actually said the words, never once.
The room fell quiet.
Myles looked down at Blake’s head resting against him.
Several long seconds passed.
Blake sighed softly.
"Forget it."
He gently patted the back of Myles’ head.
’I know that’s probably the least important issue he’s got right now. I would be stupid if I were actually upset, I know he’s not ready.’
Myles finally spoke.
"I cannot use the word ’love’ as freely as you do."
Blake lifted his head, surprised he even replied.
"Why?"
Myles’ gaze remained steady.
"Our brains do not process emotional attachment in exactly the same way."
He spoke calmly, as though explaining an easy subject.
"The alterations in our nervous systems differ from humans more than our bodies. Our perception, sensory processing, and emotional regulation all developed differently."
Blake’s eyebrows raised.
"Each individual with altered DNA experiences reality with heightened perception. Our brains constantly process more information than a normal human’s."
"Wait, in a sense that you think faster?"
"You could say that. We remember more, notice more and process emotions differently, depending on which species your alien part belongs to."
"Ah..."
"Our emotional responses are therefore... different. They do exist, but they are structured differently."
Blake listened quietly.
"Tania perceives reality even further than the rest of us. None of u possesses her ability, but we still experience the world differently from you."
He lowered his eyes.
"So when you say ’love’, I cannot guarantee my experience matches yours."
Blake scratched the back of his head.
"Huh, who would’ve thought... does that go for every other emotion? Even if it’s like platonic? Can you differ the two?"
"I do know how to categorize such things."
Blake nodded, smiling awkwardly.
"So, do you think what you feel resembles romantic love? Or maybe something else?"
Myles didn’t answer.
Instead, he became completely still.
Blake waited for some seconds.
It wasn’t as if he was avoiding the question.
He was genuinely considering it.
Eventually, he leaned forward, his forehead brushed Blake’s shoulder.
Then he slowly buried his face into Blake’s neck.
His voice came out muffled.
"It might."
Blake froze.
"..."
His heartbeat skipped.
A warmth spread through his entire chest.
Even after everything, even after all that mess, even knowing what future awaited them.
Some stupid, ridiculously happy part of him couldn’t stop smiling.
’Wah, he admitted it. He likes me, in his own way!’
He had expected relief.
Instead, he felt almost dizzy.
Myles continued quietly.
"Even if that is what this feeling is, I cannot abandon my objective."
Blake’s smile faltered.
"Yeah."
He had known.
He knew.
Still... hearing it spoken aloud another time, even after confirming his feelings, hurt.
Myles remained against his shoulder.
"I do not regret meeting you, I do not regret saving you. I will never regret it."
His voice remained level.
"I have begun experiencing desires that resemble those of a complete human. I wish to remain close to you, and I feel calmer when I know you are safe. I dislike seeing you injured."
Blake looks to the side for a second... he was kind of rambling. Good thing he is letting some of the things inside his brain out.
"Perhaps that is what humans call romance, but none of that changes what I was made to accomplish. I have built my entire existence around a single purpose, the only way this can end is when I achieve it."
Blake’s throat tightened.
He didn’t know what to say.
Every sentence Myles spoke made sense, while also being completely crazy. None of it felt acceptable.
He carefully cupped Myles’ face and guided it upward.
Those pitch-black eyes met his.
They were just as intense as always.
If anything, more so.
Blake swallowed.
"I don’t want to invalidate you, I really don’t, you know that."
His thumbs lightly brushed Myles’ cheeks.
"I don’t want to tell you your feelings are wrong, I don’t want to tell you your purpose means nothing. Because... it clearly means a lot to you."
His voice became quieter.
"But... I also don’t want to die, I don’t want everyone else to die. I..."
His voice cracked.
"I want to grow older, I want to keep living with you."
Myles simply watched him.
Blake hurried to continue.
"I know, I know saying ’don’t do it’ isn’t enough, I know you’ve carried this goal for longer than I’ve even known you. I know there are people depending on you. Your whole life has been built around it."
He looked down.
"So how am I supposed to tell you to stop? How? Everything I say sounds selfish. It sounds like I’m asking you to throw away your entire existence... just because I don’t want to lose you."
His fingers tightened slightly.
"I..."
He stopped.
No words came.
His mind simply went blank.
"I just don’t want to lose you, to something that might not even be your own will."
Silence settled over the room again.
’Ah... no, I should’ve put that differently...’
Only their breathing could be heard.
After a long while, Myles gently removed Blake’s hands from his face.
"...You need more rest."
Before Blake could protest, Myles slipped one arm beneath his knees and another behind his back.
He laid him back onto the bed with surprising care.
The mattress barely dipped beneath his weight.
He adjusted the pillow.
Pulled the blanket higher.
Tucked the edges around Blake so no cold air could slip inside.
His movements were gentle, as always, not a hint of anger.
Blake watched him the entire time.
"...Myles, I’m sorry."
He simply smoothed a strand of Blake’s hair away from his forehead.
Then he stood and turned toward the door.
Blake suddenly felt an odd pressure settle inside his chest.
"You’re leaving?"
"I have matters to attend to."
"Will you be long?"
"I do not know."
Click.
The handle turned.
The door opened.
For just a second, Myles looked back.
"Rest, stop thinking."
Then he stepped outside, the door closing with a soft click.
Blake stared at it.
The room suddenly felt far larger than before.
Far quieter.
He slowly curled beneath the blanket.
’What the...’
He wasn’t afraid.
But watching Myles walk away after everything they had just confessed... it left behind an uneasy emptiness he couldn’t quite explain.
He felt his eyes getting teary.
But what was there to cry about?
He went through it all, and now he’s here, in Myles’ base.
They were in love, too.
He has a chance of getting everyone’s trust.
Even if this wasn’t going to be easy, he always thought Myles would at least speak with him more, after everything that has happened.
And in a way, that was the case.
Myles revealed more than he had to, actually, that said a lot about his feelings.
But even when Blake poured his heart out, Myles just... didn’t acknowledge him like he wanted him to.
’This happened because I said that stupid thing at the end. He is clearly not as mentally stable as he looks, I know that, and yet I said something like that...’
He wasn’t sure if Myles was angry, but by the way he behaved, it didn’t seem like the case.
’But I mean, he said it himself, he was created for this. In a way, it isn’t his own will, right?’
Blake didn’t fall asleep that night, as other thoughts swayed him.
