’I don’t want to feel like him. I don’t want to...!’

Blake stared down at his hands.

They didn’t look right. They were far too small.

’Am I hallucinating...?!’

The fingers looked distorted beneath his gaze, almost swollen in some places and impossibly thin in others.

Dirt seemed to cling beneath his nails, dark and stubborn. There were streaks of something red across his palms, running between his fingers like dried blood that refused to disappear.

He rubbed his hands together, but nothing changed.

Then, he tried scratching at them hard, his nails dragging across his skin until it stung.

’I don’t want to feel like him.’

His breathing became uneven.

’If only I could get rid of him.’

The thought came suddenly.

So suddenly that Blake stopped scratching.

For a moment, he simply stared at his hands.

Then, something strange rose inside him.

It wasn’t anger or sadness.

His stomach twisted violently, while his chest tightened, heart suddenly beginning to hammer against his ribs much harder.

Heat rushed through his entire body.

Blake sucked in a breath.

’What...’

The room seemed warmer.

His face became hot first, then his neck, then his chest. Sweat appeared along his forehead almost instantly. He touched his cheek and recoiled slightly.

"Too hot..."

His head began to ache.

The thoughts in his mind became muddled, overlapping with one another until he couldn’t separate one from the next.

’Get rid of him. Ah. Why am I thinking that? I don’t want to be him. Who is him? Why does it hurt?’

Ba-dump, ba-dump, ba-dump, ba-dump.

Blake squeezed his eyes shut, feeling nauseous.

And then, almost as quickly as the strange surge had come, exhaustion overtook him.

He got up again, and barely managed to climb onto the bed before pulling the blanket around himself.

His skin still felt unbearably hot.

’I’m just way too tired.’

He closed his eyes.

***

"Older brother, wake up!"

A cute, bright and excited voice suddenly spoke next to him.

"Older brother, the baby is born!"

His eyes opened and, even if still a little sleepy, happiness was surging through him.

He immediately pushed himself upright.

"The baby?"

His voice sounded younger.

"Is it a girl or a boy?"

The other child grinned.

"It’s definitely a boy!"

He frowned.

"Aww."

"I like boys more!"

"You always say that, we are already boys I don’t want another one."

The other child puffed out his chest proudly.

The two children climbed out of the room together, both still wearing pajamas. Their footsteps were light against the floor as they hurried down the hallway.

"I hope it’s a girl," he said.

"Why?"

"So we can play princess in the castle."

The other child immediately huffed.

"I’d rather play with cars...!"

He laughed.

"We can’t play that with a baby anyway!"

Their argument was interrupted by the sound of footsteps.

A man stepped in front of them.

The other child immediately jumped toward him.

"Dad!"

He wrapped both arms around the man’s leg.

The man laughed softly and picked him up, pressing a kiss against his cheek.

"What are you doing here?"

The other child smiled brightly.

"Me and brother came to see the baby!"

"I see."

The man looked toward the door. Then, he walked over and opened it.

A woman was lying in the bed, looking tired.

But when she saw the three of them, her face softened.

"You are here...!"

The children immediately ran toward her.

The one that was down climbed onto the edge of the bed, while the other child was placed down beside him, and the two stared curiously at the tiny bundle in the woman’s arms.

The baby.

Both children leaned closer.

"What is it?"

"Is it a boy?"

"Or a girl?"

The woman smiled.

"It’s a..."

Everything shattered, with no sound or warning.

The room simply broke apart. The walls fractured into countless pieces. The floor disappeared beneath him.

So he fell, stomach lurching.

He reached out desperately, but there was nothing to grab.

Nothing except darkness.

Then, a hand caught him.

He froze.

The hand held him tightly.

For one brief moment, relief flooded through him.

Someone had caught him.

Someone was there.

He looked down.

The darkness stretched endlessly below.

Then something wet touched his face.

A droplet.

Then another.

Then another.

He looked upward.

He couldn’t see the person’s face.

Only darkness.

"You are not child of mine."

His eyes widened.

"What...?"

The hand released him.

He fell.

"No—!"

There was nothing beneath him.

Nothing above him.

Nothing around him.

Only endless emptiness.

Tears streamed down his face as he desperately looked upward.

"Please..."

His voice echoed.

"Please..."

Nothing answered.

"Blake!"

His eyes snapped open.

Blake gasped, his entire body jerking violently as he sat upright so quickly that his head spun.

Myles was directly in front of him.

His hands were gripping Blake’s shoulders, keeping him from falling off the bed.

His expression was controlled, but the slight frown between his brows gave away the concern in his eyes.

"Blake."

Blake stared at him. For several seconds, he couldn’t understand where he was.

His breathing was ragged.

His chest rose and fell rapidly as he looked around.

Myles didn’t let go.

"Look at me."

Blake’s eyes slowly returned to him.

Myles’ voice remained low.

"You’re awake."

Blake blinked, then swallowed.

"I..."

His voice cracked.

He raised a trembling hand to his face. His fingers came away wet.

Blake stared at them.

"What happened...?"

Myles said nothing for a second.

Blake touched his cheek again.

Sweat... and tears.

His face was completely wet.

He looked confused.

"Why am I crying?"

Myles’ expression tightened.

"You were asleep, and started sweating profusely."

Myles reached over and wiped some of the sweat from Blake’s forehead with his thumb.

Blake’s eyebrows rose.

"Gosh, why am I crying?"

Myles’ hand moved to the side of Blake’s face, wiping away another tear.

"You had a nightmare?"

Blake raised an eyebrow.

"No."

He thought for a moment.

"...Not that I remember."

Myles studied him.

Blake genuinely looked confused.

Myles sighed quietly.

"You probably had a really high fever."

Blake blinked.

"Fever?"

"That much sweat can’t be from a regular fever."

Myles placed the back of his hand against Blake’s forehead.

"It’s much lower now."

Blake nodded slowly.

"Well... earlier I was feeling pretty bad."

His voice was still sluggish. Yeah, he remembered his frustration after the phone call with his mom.

"I laid down and... well, just fell asleep."

Myles didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he helped Blake swing his legs over the side of the bed.

Blake’s feet touched the floor, his knees wobbling.

Myles immediately steadied him.

"I’m fine.

Blake scratched the back of his head.

"... sorry."

"Don’t apologize."

Myles helped him stand.

"I’ll bring you lunch and medicine."

"Medicine?"

"Yes."

"Do I have to? I’m not feeling that sick now."

"It doesn’t matter."

Blake sighed.

"Fine."

Myles looked toward the bathroom.

"In the meantime, take a shower. It’ll help you cool down."

Blake nodded.

"I should be better by evening anyway."

"You should be."

Blake took a few careful steps toward the bathroom.

Myles stayed beside him.

When they reached the door, Blake turned.

"It’s fine. I can do it on my own. I don’t have any issues."

He gave a smile.

"I feel mildly weak at best."

Myles considered it, not looking too convinced. But upon seeing Blake’s eyes, he couldn’t do anything else but sigh.

"I’ll bring your clothes once you’re done."

"Okay."

Blake stepped inside.

A few moments later, the sound of running water filled the room.

He stepped into the tub and let the water run over him.

His shoulders gradually relaxed, eyes closed.

For a little while, he simply stood there, just letting the water wash away the sweat clinging to his skin.

***

In the other room, Myles stood over the stove.

A slight frown remained on his face.

He stirred the food, but his thoughts were elsewhere.

He had seen Blake panic in his sleep before.

He had seen him mumble and wander around without seeming fully awake, but never like this.

Never screaming with such desperation.

Myles’ hand tightened around the utensil.

He remembered hearing the noise from outside the base.

The moment Blake’s heartbeat had suddenly accelerated, Myles had panicked.

Not because he thought Blake was in immediate danger.

Because something about the sound had been wrong.

Too frightened and desperate.

Myles had moved immediately.

He had found Blake standing in the middle of the room, barely conscious, his face soaked with tears.

And he had been saying the same thing over and over.

Myles stared down at the food.

The words echoed in his mind.

"I don’t want to leave."

His frown deepened.

Blake had sounded terrified.

Myles had heard fear in Blake’s heartbeat before.

But this had been different.

It had sounded almost like someone was begging not to be taken somewhere.

Myles looked toward the bathroom.

The water was still running.

He remained silent.

He didn’t know what Blake had dreamed about.

Blake didn’t know either.

Myles lowered his gaze.

He finished preparing lunch.

Then, after a moment’s hesitation, he reached for the medicine.

He would stay close.

Just in case.
