As Blake expected, his seat was at the very bottom of the table.

He raised an eyebrow slightly as he pulled the chair back and sat down.

’Yeah, this is exactly like last time.’

Everyone else had their own places, carefully arranged around the enormous table, while his seat was practically tucked away at the end.

’And to think this woman was discussing a supposed mental illness with that doctor...’

Blake lowered his gaze.

It wasn’t as if he had expected better treatment because of something like that.

Honestly, after everything, he would have been more surprised if they had suddenly decided to treat him warmly.

Still... if something like that had genuinely been on the table for her, then why was the treatment he received still so careless?

Wasn’t that supposed to make someone more attentive?

’Then again, she does see me as a mere inconvenience.’

The servants began placing the food down.

Plates were arranged one after another.

There was barely any conversation.

The quiet clinking of silverware was practically the only sound in the room.

Blake looked around.

’Well. The atmosphere isn’t so bad.’

It wasn’t friendly, but least nobody was yelling.

’Man, my standards with this family are so low it is pitiful.’

Eventually, everyone began eating.

Blake picked up his fork and took a small bite.

The food was good, just like last time.

’If only I could actually enjoy it...’

Ba-dump.

Ba-dump.

Ba-dump.

He frowned.

’Wah.’

He pressed his lips together.

’My chest hurts...’

He took another bite anyway.

’Can’t even enjoy this expensive stuff in peace.’

His heartbeat seemed particularly noticeable today, and the silence certainly wasn’t helping.

Everyone was eating quietly, which meant Blake became increasingly conscious of every tiny movement he made.

He remembered the first time he had eaten lunch with them, that had been a disaster.

’No joke, they got offended so fast.’

They had caused an entire scene because of pepper.

Blake’s expression became slightly embarrassed just thinking about it.

He had all serious, basically telling them to cut it out, that he was an adult now and that they should all be civil, and eventually walked out.

’Unfortunately, my mistake was to think that the people here we’re even a slightly bit reasonable.’

Well... he had been dealing with a lot back then.

And he had been much less capable of hiding his annoyance, too.

He certainly didn’t want to walk out halfway through lunch and have everyone saying he was some spoiled, ungrateful child for the next days.

’I don’t want to stay here all the way to the end but, how am I supposed to leave though?’

So, he let the meal continued as they wanted.

He occasionally glanced toward the others, but nobody seemed interested in leaving.

’Ah c’mon now, let’s all get out please.’

At least he wasn’t expected to make conversation.

Eventually, the last plates were cleared.

Blake quietly let out a breath.

’Finally.’

He had survived.

Everyone began getting up around the same time.

Blake stood as well.

Nobody said anything to him.

He simply followed the others out of the dining room.

Once he was in the hallway, he didn’t bother lingering.

He immediately headed toward the stairs, sighing heavily.

’Lord, at least it wasn’t, like, an hour-long lunch.’

He climbed the stairs and, the higher he went, the quieter the villa became.

Honestly, the mere thought of sitting inside his room and doing absolutely nothing gave him no motivation whatsoever.

’If I call Myles, I’ll end up missing him more... ugh what a pain!’

He sighed heavily.

There was nothing entertaining to do here.

This enormous place had dozens upon dozens of rooms, yet he was expected to sit in one of them and stare at the walls.

Blake stopped halfway up the stairs.

’Maybe I should just explore around for a little.’

He looked back. Nobody was coming up.

’Well... rich people are usually lazier than the average person.’

He shrugged.

’Maybe they’re just taking the elevator.’

Blake continued upward.

He wasn’t entirely sure which floors he was supposed to avoid.

He didn’t know where everyone’s rooms were.

One thing he was certain about, though, was that the last floor only had one inhabited room, which was his own.

Nobody had bothered him when he had stayed there before.

A few months ago, during Calliope’s birthday, he hadn’t been particularly interested in exploring.

At the time, his own situation had been such a mess that he barely had the mental energy to care about the rest of the house.

He had been more focused on other things, like trying to understand Ennora’s ring and figuring out what exactly was happening around him.

’Most of all, I was so scared of Myles’ favorability falling off.’

Exploring some rich family’s villa hadn’t exactly been high on his list.

But now... he reached the final floor. He walked down the hallway, where his bedroom was, and started exploring rooms from there.

’Well, maybe now is the time.’

He started walking.

The hallway was long, there were several doors.

Blake tried the first one, but there was nothing interesting.

’Well, this is just one of them.’

He moved on and opened another one, but still nothing.

Safe to say, it went on like that for a while.

Blake scratched the back of his head.

’Wah.’

He stepped into yet another room.

’This is so boring.’

Some of the rooms were clearly storage spaces for servants.

There were shelves, folded linens, cleaning supplies, spare furniture, and various household items arranged neatly inside.

Other rooms were simply empty guest rooms.

Large beds, plain decorations, unused wardrobes.

Blake walked into one, looked around for approximately three seconds, and walked straight back out.

"This is pointless!"

He continued down the hallway.

The farther he went, the more disappointed he became.

He had expected at least something interesting.

Anything.

Instead, it was just bedrooms.

Then he reached the very first room, positioned right beside the staircase.

’Well, I’m back at the start. So this floor is just a useless one that they dumped me into.’

Blake stopped, looking at the door.

He didn’t expect anything special. Still, he opened it.

His eyebrows immediately rose.

"Oh."

This was different.

The room was much more colorful than the others.

It looked like a playroom.

There were shelves filled with toys.

A small table, several chairs, stuffed animals, boxes. And, sitting prominently near one wall, was a large princess castle.

Blake stepped inside, looking around.

’This is definitely where Calliope used to play...’

The princess castle was enough to make that assumption.

He walked farther into the room, then paused.

There were other toys too.

Cars, building blocks, toy weapons, a few model vehicles... things that seemed more traditionally associated with boys.

Blake tilted his head.

’Either she has an open taste, which is unlikely, considering how girly she is...’

He glanced toward the castle.

’Or the other guy also used to play here.’

That was interesting. He walked toward a low shelf, and there were several DVDs stacked there.

Blake crouched down.

’A pile of movies?’

He picked one up.

The case was a little worn.

He turned it around, examining the back. There wasn’t much information, so he didn’t bother reading it to the end.

Blake looked toward the television.

There was an old DVD player connected beneath it.

He shrugged.

’Why not?’

He put the disc inside.

The television flickered.

For a moment, the screen was black.

Then the picture appeared.

Blake sat down on the floor.

The video began.

It wasn’t really a movie, it was only around twenty minutes long.

The story followed a boy who seemed to have a perfect life.

A loving family.

A comfortable home.

Good friends.

No major problems.

No tragedy.

No dramatic twist.

Nothing particularly terrible happened to him.

He simply went through an ordinary, happy day.

He woke up.

Had breakfast with his family.

Went to school.

Played with his friends.

Came home.

Had dinner.

Then spent time with his parents before going to bed. That was it.

Blake watched quietly.

Then he laughed lightly.

’Nothing happens.’

He leaned back against the side of the bed.

’But it’s not a bad story.’

The boy on the screen smiled while sitting beside his family.

Blake smiled faintly.

’What is the name of the main character...?’

He reached for the DVD case.

’It should be written on the back I ignored...’

He looked down at it.

"What are you laughing at?"

Blake froze.

His hand stopped halfway toward the DVD case, slowly turning his head.

Someone was standing behind him.

He had just entered the room without Blake noticing.

Blake stared at him.

The birthday boy.

Alexander.

The boy who had been the reason Blake had come back here in the first place.

For several seconds, neither of them said anything.

Blake remained seated on the floor, still holding the DVD case.

Alexander looked at the television, then back at Blake.

His expression was difficult to read.

Blake blinked.

’Oh.’

He slowly straightened.

’As always, that unpleasant look makes me feel weird as hell.’

The birthday boy tilted his head slightly.

"I asked what you were laughing at."

Blake glanced toward the television.

Then back at him.

He smiled awkwardly.

"Nothing much."

He lifted the DVD case slightly.

"I just thought the story was funny."

Alexander stared at him.

"Funny?"

"Not funny like it’s a comedy."

Blake scratched the back of his head.

"Just..."

He looked back at the screen.

"...funny because nothing happens."

Alexander remained silent.

Blake smiled faintly.

"But it’s nice."

The room fell quiet again.

And for some reason, Blake suddenly became very aware that he was alone in a playroom with the birthday boy he barely knew.

He looked at Alexander.

Alexander looked back.

Blake swallowed.

’Well.’

He glanced at the DVD in his hand.

’This wasn’t exactly how I expected exploring the villa to go.’
