Chapter 735: Chapter 735: Seed of the Dao

Ethan slowly opened his eyes. At that exact moment, a series of heavy thuds began echoing from within the cocoon that enveloped him. The purple and black structure started to inflate and expand until it shattered into a thousand pieces, releasing Ethan in his complete form.

As he let out a deafening roar toward the heavens, the earth beneath his feet began to tremble violently. Dense electromagnetic clouds gathered above, and a storm of destructive lightning rained down upon him with fury. Ethan simply opened his mouth, causing that strange black hole with the amethyst ring to appear around it. The lightning bolts were diverted from their path and flew into the vortex devoured without leaving a single trace.

A short distance away, the Lich Vel’Kha’Lems observed the scene with a macabre smile on his cadaverous face, fascinated by the terrifying power emanating from that human. With a flicker of dark energy, the Lich vanished from his position and reappeared floating right in front of Ethan.

"My... it seems you have fully awakened your Seed of the Dao," Vel’Kha’Lems said.

Ethan fixed his gaze upon the Lich. His amethyst eyes, now imbued with a superior vision, revealed something striking to him: Vel’Kha’Lems’ body was crisscrossed by fine red and black lines extending deep into the earth, connecting him to his hidden phylactery. Furthermore, Ethan could perceive the Lich’s true condition. His body was withered, exhausted, and on the brink of collapse; yet, he had been capable of unleashing such truly catastrophic power moments ago.

That revelation made Ethan feel somewhat weak by comparison, but far from intimidating him, it ignited a fiery fighting spirit in his chest. Eager to test the reach of his new powers, Ethan looked at him with determination.

"Vel’Kha’Lems, fight me," Ethan said. "I want to see what I am capable of now."

The Lich shook his head slightly with composure.

"I cannot face you at this moment, Master," Vel’Kha’Lems said. "My spells will be unable to do anything to you, as you now possess a Seed of the Dao."

"But you were able to finish off all the Great Ancestors without any trouble," Ethan said, frowning.

"Yes, but that was because they had not yet completed their own seed," Vel’Kha’Lems said. "You see, human... curses are actually fragments of laws. The more laws you comprehend, the more powerful your curses will be. However, when one law clashes against another law, entirely different factors come into play. Besides, this avatar is merely a humble remnant of my true power; it could not stand up to you. To fight you, I would have to use my real body, and that would cause my recovery process to be even slower than it already is."

Ethan nodded slightly, absorbing the Lich’s words.

"I understand," Ethan said. "Then I won’t waste any more time; I will go to the Crimson Sect."

Ethan looked around and frowned. There was nothing. The dense vegetation, the mountain, the transport ships, and even the last scrap of debris had vanished entirely. He did not clearly remember it, but the terrifying power of his black hole had consumed everything in its path. Any trace of matter containing even the slightest bit of spiritual energy had been devoured without leaving a trace, transforming the landscape into a desolate, arid desert.

"Where are we?" Ethan said, disoriented.

"It is the very same forest where you ascended, Master," Vel’Kha’Lems said. "Your law power is strange; I cannot recognize it. Mine is the Law of Death and Life, also known as the Denial of Death... but your law is different. It feels like a giant mouth eager to consume everything. It is not the Law of the Void, but that amethyst glow emanating from you is truly terrifying."

"I don’t know which one it is exactly," Ethan said, staring at his own hand. "But while I was inside that cocoon, I understood something... the world, the people, the earth itself are made of energy. And that energy is something I can devour to strengthen myself."

"Devour... the Law of the Devourer?" the Lich said, pondering. "I have only heard rumors about that law. Though it makes sense... it is truly mysterious."

Ethan looked out over the vast emptiness of the desert again and noticed another obvious absence.

"Where is everyone?" Ethan said. "Even your skeletons have vanished."

"I sent them to surround the Crimson Sect six years ago," Vel’Kha’Lems said.

"Six years?" Ethan said, blinking in disbelief.

"Master... how long do you think you have been inside there?" the Lich said.

"I don’t know..." Ethan said. "A few hours?"

"No, Master," Vel’Kha’Lems said in a measured tone. "Ten years have passed."

"Ten years?!" Ethan said, feeling as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped over him.

The weight of time hit him with brutal force. What about his family? What about the survivors from his old world? They were all scattered and lost in this terrifying realm, and he had been fast asleep for an entire decade? Had he lost so much time? It couldn’t be true.

"I can’t believe it..." Ethan said, clenching his fists in anguish. "What has happened during all this time?"

"I will explain, Master," Vel’Kha’Lems said. "The week after the total destruction of the enemy forces, small spies began appearing in this area. They were all wearing those crimson robes. I used a large-scale confusion spell to keep them from approaching; I didn’t want to alert them or make them panic, so it worked for several months. However, over time, more and more of those humans started appearing, but this time wearing different colors: black, purple, white, and green."

The Lich paused briefly before continuing.

"Every time they crossed paths, a fight to the death broke out," Vel’Kha’Lems said. "Their uniforms were similar to the ones worn by those brats you defeated. I assume it was an internal struggle looking for them."

"You’re right, it must have been them," Ethan said, forcing himself to regain his composure as he connected the dots. "They brought a large portion of their strength here, but not all of it. They must have kept enough power to keep their sects operating. With the sudden disappearance of their Great Ancestors, all those sects must have panicked."
