The Promise Before the Temple
"You really are going to her tonight, aren’t you?"
Leon blinked.
"Evelyn?"
"Who else?" Selena’s voice was soft.
But there was an edge to it.
A hurt she couldn’t hide.
*He’s going to her.*
*The night we just shared...*
*And now he’s going to share it with her.*
*I know I’m not his only one.*
*I knew this would happen.*
*But it still hurts.*
*It hurts more than I expected.*
Leon stopped walking.
He turned to face her fully.
His hands cupped her face.
"Sweetheart. Look at me."
Selena’s golden eyes met his.
"I’m not going to lie to you. Yes, I’m going to her tonight."
Selena’s jaw tightened.
Her eyes glistened.
"But that doesn’t change how I feel about you."
He brushed his thumb across her cheek.
"You’re my first. My tigeress. My beloved."
She blinked.
"Beloved?"
"Of course. You think I’d forget our night together?"
His voice softened.
"The things you did to me. The way you made me feel."
"You’re irreplaceable, Selena."
Selena’s lips parted.
Her heart fluttered.
*He called me his beloved.*
*His.*
*And he means it.*
*I can see it in his eyes.*
*He’s not lying.*
*He’s not pretending.*
*He really does care about me.*
*I’m not just another contract to him.*
*I’m something more.*
*I’m everything.*
"You... you really mean that?"
"Every word."
She threw her arms around him.
Burying her face in his chest.
"I don’t want to share you," she whispered.
"But I know I have to."
"Just... promise me you’ll always come back to me."
Leon wrapped his arms around her.
Holding her tight.
"I promise, sweetheart. I’ll always come back to you."
She smiled against his chest.
"I’ll hold you to that."
"Please do."
---
The temple was hard to miss.
A grand, magnificent structure that dominated the skyline.
This area was also the most prosperous part of Aurelia City.
Auction houses.
Weapon shops.
Equipment stores.
All located here.
As Leon approached the temple entrance, ready to step inside.
A familiar voice called out to him.
"Leon!"
"It’s really you!"
A sturdy young man approached.
A shy-looking girl following behind him.
His eyes lit up the moment he spotted Leon.
His name was Garry.
A classmate of Leon’s.
Someone he got along with reasonably well.
"You actually contracted a beast-girl?"
Garry also noticed Selena standing behind Leon.
He drew in a sharp breath.
"Leon, you lucky bastard—your beast-girl is gorgeous."
*She’s absolutely stunning,* Garry thought.
*Her hair looks like spun silver.*
*Her eyes like molten gold.*
*And her body...*
*Those curves.*
*That confidence.*
*She’s unlike any beast-girl I’ve ever seen.*
"You know, news about you has spread all through class!"
"Some people say you contracted an S-rank beast-girl."
"Others say it’s SS-rank."
"And the craziest one—some claim they saw your beast-girl evolve."
"And every beast-girl present knelt on the spot!"
"That day, all beasts paid homage!"
"They say your beast-girl is at least SSS-rank!"
Garry’s eyes were filled with envy.
"Too bad I entered the dungeon in the afternoon—I missed your beast-girl’s evolution!"
Garry scratched his head awkwardly.
"So... your beast-girl... wh-what rank is she really?"
At this point, Garry was almost stuttering.
Appearance alone couldn’t determine strength.
But power had presence.
Selena stood there like an unsheathed blade.
Just being near her made his scalp tingle.
"They were right."
"My beast-girl is SSS-rank."
Garry was stunned speechless.
Sweat began to form on his palms.
Nervous.
Extremely nervous.
SSS-rank!
At that level of growth, she would be capable of destroying heaven and earth!
That meant—the two people before him would one day become figures he could never hope to reach.
*Incredibly envious.*
Garry swallowed hard.
That ranking was simply terrifying.
Now he didn’t even dare to look directly at Selena.
"Uh... well, Leon, are you here to sell weapons and equipment too?"
"I know a few shops—the owners are honest. I can take you if you want."
Garry offered warmly.
"No. I’m going there."
Leon pointed at the temple doors.
"The Temple of the Beast God?" Garry paused.
Then realization dawned.
"Oh, you’re going to sightsee. There’s a huge statue inside—pretty impressive."
Besides handling second transition quests, the temple was also a popular tourist spot.
It was a natural assumption.
Leon smiled and didn’t explain further.
Reaching Level 20 in such a short time was unprecedented in all of Aurelia City.
*If I told him I’m here for the second transition,* Leon thought.
*He’d probably faint.*
*Better to just let him think I’m sightseeing.*
"I’ve got some things to do. I’ll head in now."
"Sure. We’ll level together sometime."
Garry watched Leon disappear through the temple doors.
A completely absurd thought suddenly crossed his mind.
*Leon isn’t going to the Temple of the Beast God for his second transition, is he?*
*Nah, no way.*
*Who levels up that fast?*
He shook his head.
*Impossible.*
*Absolutely impossible.*
*No one in Aurelia City has ever reached Level 20 that quickly.*
*I’m just being paranoid.*
*He’s probably just sightseeing.*
*Yeah.*
*That’s all.*
But even as he thought it, a small part of him wondered.
*What if...*
*What if it’s true?*
*What if he really is that strong?*
He looked at Selena.
She was walking beside Leon.
Her hand in his.
Her golden eyes soft.
*He really is lucky,* Garry thought.
*SSS-rank beast-girl.*
*And she’s not just powerful.*
*She’s devoted.*
*The way she looks at him...*
*I’ve never seen anyone look at someone like that.*
*I hope I find that one day.*
