Tempting Him to Lose Control

Chapter 105: Did That Make You Feel Good?

Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Did That Make You Feel Good?

Miles Warren didn’t answer. He lay down, tucked her into the blankets, and said in a muffled voice, "Go to sleep."

"You still haven’t answered me—"

"If you don’t want to sleep, we can continue."

Claire Kendall pouted but didn’t press him.

She grabbed her phone, took a picture of the ring on her ring finger, and posted it to her social feed without a caption.

Instantly, the comments section blew up.

[Congratulations! Wishing you a lifetime of happiness.]

[What a huge diamond! I wouldn’t dare buy a piece of glass that big!]

[Sharon Carter: Girl, are you kidding me?]

[Ian Rhodes: Claire, I’ll always be wishing you the best.]

...

Miles Warren rested his chin on the top of her head, his eyes half-closed as he glanced at her phone screen. His gaze lingered on the social feed post for a moment.

He didn’t say anything, but the arm wrapped around her slender waist tightened slightly.

He knew very well this was Claire Kendall’s deliberate attempt to please him, to soothe his foul mood from earlier that evening. And he, for one, was a sucker for it.

「The next day.」

The two of them flew back to Aethel.

By the time they reached Regency Gardens, it was already dark.

Miles Warren put away the suitcases, changed his clothes, and went into the kitchen.

Claire Kendall took a quick shower and lay in bed playing on her phone. Listening to the hum of the range hood from outside, she felt a strange sense of comfort.

Her phone rang. The name "Sharon" flashed on the screen.

The moment Claire Kendall pressed the answer button, her friend on the other end blew a fuse.

"I’ve called you so many times! You finally picked up!"

"I was on the plane this afternoon. We just got home."

Sharon Carter’s voice was loud. "Claire Kendall, you better explain yourself! What’s with that social feed post? You’re married?!"

Claire Kendall gave a hesitant "mm-hmm."

"You got your marriage license with Miles Warren?"

Claire Kendall just hummed in agreement again.

Sharon Carter let out a sigh of relief. "As long as it’s not that animal Jacob Sinclair, I’m good. Miles Warren... well, he seems pretty reliable."

Her tone then shifted, becoming a little strange. "But that ring..."

"What about the ring?" Claire Kendall held out her hand, looking at the massive, blue, pigeon-egg-sized diamond.

"That ring was an auction item from the South African National Museum back in ’20. It went for six hundred million to a mysterious domestic buyer. It looks like that buyer was Miles Warren."

Sharon Carter sighed. "He didn’t even know you back in ’20, did he? So he most likely bought that ring for the one he never got over."

"Claire, I’m not trying to imply anything, I just don’t want you to get in too deep. It’s painful to love someone who will never love you back."

Claire Kendall listened quietly. ’No wonder he didn’t answer last night when I asked him when he bought the ring.’

She stared at the ring, her fingers flexing slightly.

She chuckled softly. "Well... what a coincidence. The one he never got over and I must have the exact same ring size."

"You’re really taking this in stride," Sharon Carter said, shaking her head.

’What else can I do? He has someone he never got over, and it’s not like I can just rip her out of his heart. Besides, I was with Jacob Sinclair for almost ten years. I guess that makes us even.’

’Miles Warren is actually very good to me. If I take things slow, maybe I can get him to trust me and forget the one he never got over?’

Sharon Carter cleared her throat. "Lovey-dovey stuff is for kids. Adults just care about what’s practical. If it really doesn’t work out, just get a divorce. It’s not like your parents know anyway."

"Miles Warren is rich and handsome, so you’re the one who scored! By the way, how is he in bed? Did he get you off?"

"AHEM, AHEM..." Claire Kendall nearly choked on her own saliva. ’What kind of outrageous things is Sharon saying!’

"Sounds like he did." Sharon Carter laughed slyly. "That whole aloof-guy-in-the-streets-freak-in-the-sheets thing... You really hit the jackpot..."

"Claire Kendall."

A deep, cool male voice sounded from the bedroom doorway as Miles Warren pushed the door open and walked in.

Sharon was still spouting her nonsense on the other end as Claire Kendall fumbled to hang up the phone.

"Dr... Dr. Warren, you’re here."

Caught red-handed, Claire Kendall was mortified. She had no idea how much he had overheard, especially the last part. ’Damn you, Sharon Carter.’

"Are the bowls... ready? I’ll go out to eat the pot..."

’This stupid mouth! What am I even saying?!’

Claire Kendall fled to the kitchen as if escaping. Miles Warren stared at her retreating back, his expression suddenly turning ice-cold and emotionless.

On the table were two dishes: stir-fried pork with chili peppers and spicy sea bass. Both were her favorites.

Claire Kendall looked up at him. "Dr. Warren, how do you know me so well?"

Miles Warren picked up a pair of chopsticks and handed them to her.

"Come with me to the family estate tomorrow. We won’t tell your mother about the marriage for now, but we need to tell the Warren family."

Claire Kendall’s hand, holding her bowl, paused. She looked up, blinking as she gazed at him.

"So soon?"

Miles Warren pulled out a chair and sat down across from her. He didn’t look at her, his eyes fixed on his plate, looking somewhat dark.

"Is it soon?"

"Or did you never plan on letting our families know, to make it easier for you to run off whenever you want?"

He had heard her conversation with Sharon Carter loud and clear.

Claire Kendall’s mouth fell slightly open. She was stunned for a moment. "Run off? I wasn’t thinking that at all."

"But I have to go to Moonstone first tomorrow to finalize some design drafts."

"Okay. I’ll pick you up."

Claire Kendall refused. "No need. I’ll drive over myself when I’m done."

Miles Warren was silent for a moment before giving a quiet, noncommittal "mm."

The next day, Claire Kendall went to Moonstone first to finalize the drawings for their upcoming new product line.

But her mind wasn’t on her work at all. It was completely preoccupied with Miles Warren and the family estate. It wouldn’t be right to show up for the first time as Miles Warren’s wife empty-handed.

The reason she told Miles Warren not to pick her up was so she could prepare gifts for the Warren elders.

"Wendy, there’s a double-sided, gold-threaded folding fan in the storeroom. Get it out and wrap it up."

Claire Kendall changed into a dignified, elegant qipao and carefully applied some light makeup.

Wendy White teased her, "Claire, you’re taking this more seriously than an awards ceremony."

Claire Kendall let out a slow breath. "This is far more nerve-wracking than any awards ceremony."

Once everything was ready, she set off in her car.

「—」

「The Warren Family Estate.」

Inside the vast, Chinese-style living room, three round mahogany tables were set up, creating an exceptionally grand atmosphere.

Louis Warren, dressed in a red Tang suit, sat at the head seat with a joyful expression on his face.

He had given the order to announce his youngest son Miles Warren’s marriage today, summoning all the direct and extended relatives of the Warren family. The room was packed, a massive and impressive gathering.

Everyone there knew that once Miles Warren’s marriage was settled, the old man would most likely have his youngest son return to the family’s corporate group.

Victor Warren sat at one of the tables, his expression calm as he unhurriedly toasted the other elders. But out of the corner of his eye, he glanced at his "dear" brother, a vicious glint in his eyes.

Five minutes ago, he had sent a message to his subordinate.

[Stop Claire Kendall from reaching the estate at all costs. If you can’t, then kill her.]

Miles Warren stood in the long corridor by the entrance, his eyes fixed on his phone.

He sent a message to Claire Kendall: [Have you left yet?]

Then another.

[Almost here? Be safe.]

And another.

[If you haven’t left, I’ll come get you.]

He waited. There was no reply.
