Chapter 108: Chapter 108: An Ulterior Motive
Miles Warren strode forward and caught her by the waist.
He looked down, and his pupils contracted sharply.
A dark red bloodstain was spreading across her cheongsam, running from her thigh down to her calf. It was a horrifying sight.
The man’s fingers trembled as he lifted the hem of Claire Kendall’s cheongsam.
Her left leg was wrapped in several thick layers of gauze, now soaked crimson and dripping down her thigh.
After forcing herself to endure for so long, Claire Kendall finally couldn’t hold on any longer.
She curled up in his arms, her face scrunched up as she whimpered in pain.
"Miles... my leg hurts so much..."
「Aethel General Hospital, outside a VIP ward.」
Miles Warren had been sitting on the bench for a full two hours.
His phone screen dimmed and lit up again and again, playing the traffic cam footage of the crash on a loop.
In the video, Claire Kendall’s car was driving normally. A minute later, two SUVs with fake plates appeared. Without any warning, they suddenly accelerated, closing in on her vehicle.
The two vehicles, one on each side, one in front and one behind, constantly changed speed, ramming and scraping against Claire Kendall’s car like a pair of hungry wolves toying with their prey.
With nowhere to escape, Claire Kendall decisively swerved into the guardrail, threw open the door, and jumped from the moving car.
The immense momentum sent Claire Kendall tumbling across the ground four or five times before she slammed hard into a thicket of bushes.
Watching it again was like enduring death by a thousand cuts. A dull ache throbbed in his very bones.
She was so badly injured, yet she had still endured the pain, gone to the old family home, and forced herself to stay by his side through the entire event.
’He couldn’t understand her anymore.’
Miles Warren’s knuckles turned white. An undeniable crack was forming in his composure, visible in his eyes.
"Stop watching it." Jonathan Keller walked over, plucked the phone from his hand, and switched off the screen.
His tone was exceptionally cold.
"It’s just some severe scrapes and bruises. Nothing deep, no broken bones. She’ll be fine after a little rest. Your heart aches for her now?"
Jonathan Keller tossed a thick stack of medical reports onto the bench beside him and sneered.
"Don’t be in such a hurry to feel sorry for her. Take a good look at this."
Miles Warren glanced down. It was a pathology report for Lindsay Joyce.
The brain tumor was malignant. Its location was tricky, making the surgery incredibly high-risk. Almost no one in the country dared to perform it.
A single line was noted at the end of the report.
Professor Olek is the only surgeon in the world with a record of successfully removing such a tumor.
Olek had been Miles Warren’s university professor abroad. The man was a recluse, but he and Miles had a good relationship. If Miles were to ask, Olek would likely do him the favor.
Those few short lines were like a cascade of ice water.
’If she needed someone to perform the surgery, she could have just asked me directly. Was it worth gambling her life over something like this?’
’She really doesn’t love me. She’s never even trusted me.’
Jonathan Keller’s words were like daggers. "If I hadn’t seen this report, she would have already won her bet—a bet that your heart would ache for her, that you’d forgive her completely and agree to all her conditions."
Miles Warren shoved the report back into Jonathan Keller’s hands. "If the traffic police come to the hospital to investigate, let me know beforehand."
"Miles, you..."
Jonathan Keller gritted his teeth. ’This lovesick fool is a lost cause.’
Inside the hospital room, Claire Kendall groggily opened her eyes to a world of white. The faint scent of disinfectant filled her nostrils.
She tried to sit up, but the slightest movement sent an excruciating pain shooting through her left leg.
"HSSS—"
Miles Warren walked in and pressed her gently back onto the bed. "Don’t move around."
Claire Kendall tilted her small face up, blinking as she looked at him with a pitiful expression.
"If you know it hurts, then stay still. If that wound gets infected, you’ll have to get your leg amputated. We won’t be able to save it."
Claire Kendall pursed her lips and explained in a quiet voice.
"I really couldn’t get away from them. In that situation, if I’d stopped the car, I never would have made it to the old family home."
"The only way to get rid of them was to hit the guardrail and make a big scene~"
She hooked a finger around Miles Warren’s, swinging it back and forth. "Don’t worry, Dr. Warren. I won’t make a widower out of you."
His expression was stern. "Shut up."
"Alright, alright, I’ll stop talking."
Her face was pale, an utterly heart-wrenching sight.
"By the way, yesterday... I think I got a little carried away and offended your father. Is everything alright?"
"Now you’re asking? After you’ve already offended him?" Miles Warren said, holding a freshly cut slice of apple to her lips.
Claire Kendall took a small bite and mumbled, "Because I was so angry."
Miles Warren was unfazed. "I’m not angry. What are you so angry about?"
"I’m angry that they don’t love you! How can they not see how wonderful you are, Dr. Warren? Are they blind?"
She looked at him, her eyes shining with pure sincerity.
"But it doesn’t matter if they don’t love you. I’ll love you from now on."
"In this life and the next, I’ll always love you!"
Miles Warren’s fingers paused as he peeled the apple. The blade slipped, nearly cutting him.
He looked at her earnest expression, searching her face for any sign of a lie but finding none. His heart shuddered. He felt himself being torn apart, caught between losing control and staying rational.
"Oh, right, Dr. Warren. There was something I wanted to talk to you about."
Miles Warren nodded, his lips tightening into a thin line.
"Lindsay’s test results came back. The brain tumor is malignant, and it’s in a very bad spot."
Claire Kendall gripped his arm, her voice cautious. "Only your mentor, Professor Olek, can perform this surgery."
"Could you please ask him to take her case? To save Lindsay, just this once?"
’So that’s what this was all about.’
An icy stillness settled over Miles Warren’s heart.
’He never thought she’d be so impatient. The sweet nothings she had just uttered already had a price tag attached.’
Claire Kendall watched him. ’What does his silence mean?’ She couldn’t tell if he would agree to help or not.
’He even looks a little cold. Is he waiting for me to show my sincerity?’
’That must mean I need to be more proactive.’
Claire Kendall speared a slice of the apple he had just cut and held it to his lips.
"Have a taste. It’s really sweet."
Miles Warren turned his head away. "I bought the fruit, and I peeled it. You’re quite clever, trying to win favor with a gift that cost you nothing."
’This man...’
But Claire Kendall didn’t give up.
She wrapped her arms around the man’s neck, took a piece of apple between her own teeth, and brought it to his cool lips...
She let out a soft hum.
