Chapter 110: Chapter 110: Painful Pleasure

Miles Warren’s voice tensed. "Is that young lady’s name Claire Kendall?"

"Yes. You two aren’t talking about the same patient, are you?"

"My wife adores the embroidery Ms. Kendall sent and insisted on coming with me."

...

Miles Warren’s head was buzzing.

Four days ago, even before the family dinner, Claire Kendall had already contacted Olek and convinced him to fly over for the surgery.

She hadn’t lied to him. He had misunderstood her.

"Miles? Are you still there?" Olek asked. "Since it’s the same patient, I’ll stick to the time I arranged with Ms. Kendall. You can pick me up from the airport then."

"Okay. Thank you, Professor."

Miles Warren returned to the hospital room. Claire Kendall was still asleep.

He put down his phone, lay down gently, and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind. The person in his arms unconsciously snuggled closer, letting out a soft murmur.

Miles Warren’s arms tightened around her.

’If it wasn’t for Lindsay Joyce, then what was she so desperate for?’

’Could it be... that it really was for me?’

Miles Warren closed his eyes, a bitter curve forming on his thin lips.

’The old me would have been ecstatic. But now, I won’t delude myself into thinking Claire Kendall could ever love me.’

He had been thinking about it for ten years, after all.

’Whether she loves me or not isn’t that important. As long as she’s by my side, unable to run or escape, that’s enough.’

The next day, Claire Kendall slept until ten. Miles Warren only woke her when the nurse came to change her dressing.

Miles Warren helped her sit up, thoughtfully placed a soft pillow behind her back, and then stepped aside to give the nurse space.

The two young nurses exchanged a knowing glance. Judging by the scene, Dr. Warren must have spent the night in the suite.

After her dressing was changed and she’d had breakfast, Claire Kendall wanted to visit Lindsay Joyce.

Miles Warren helped her wash up and change, then lifted her into the wheelchair and pushed her to the inpatient ward.

Claire Kendall recalled his words from the day before and turned to look at him. "Didn’t you say you’d only take care of me for one night?"

He looked down at her, his expression placid. "I’m merely fulfilling my duties as a husband."

"Well then, Dr. Warren, you’re fulfilling them very well. You’ve gotten quite good at waiting on people."

She added with a coy huff, "Especially last night."

-

In a room in the inpatient ward, Lindsay Joyce was sitting on her hospital bed, discussing a document with Ian Rhodes.

Seeing Claire Kendall enter in a wheelchair, Ian Rhodes’s expression filled with worry. He shot up and rushed forward. "Claire, how did you get hurt? Where are you injured? Is it serious?"

Miles Warren took a step forward, blocking Claire Kendall with his body. His tone was indifferent.

"Thank you for your concern. She’s fine."

Ian Rhodes’s gaze went past Miles Warren, his brows knitting even tighter. "Claire, are you really okay? How could you get injured right after getting married?"

"I just bumped into something by accident, I’m really fine." Claire Kendall patted Miles Warren’s arm, signaling for him to move aside.

The man’s eyes darkened, but he said nothing.

"Lindsay, don’t worry. I’ve already contacted Professor Olek. He was Dr. Warren’s university professor, and he’s flying over next week to perform the surgery himself."

Lindsay Joyce, who had been flipping through the document, paused. "Thanks."

She immediately switched back to work mode.

"Let’s not talk about me for now. OCHH has a problem. Eight managers resigned in one day, more than half of our orders were canceled, and the production lines have ground to a halt."

Lindsay Joyce’s tone was grave but calm.

"I had someone look into it. It was Victor Warren. His daughter, Yvonne Warren, failed to acquire us, so they resorted to these dirty tricks."

Claire Kendall subconsciously explained on his behalf, "Dr. Warren doesn’t know about this. He’s not involved in the Warren Group’s business."

"I know." Lindsay Joyce looked at her injured leg, then glanced up at Miles Warren, her voice cold.

"If you can’t protect someone in the Warren family’s muddy waters, then don’t drag them into it."

"Lindsay—" Claire Kendall cut in, trying to stop her.

Miles Warren silently accepted the criticism. He had indeed been thoughtless regarding the family dinner.

Lindsay Joyce leaned back, her chin slightly raised.

"Ian Rhodes and I have discussed a few solutions. Let me run them by you."

Ian Rhodes naturally pulled his chair up next to Claire Kendall’s wheelchair and took another document out of his briefcase.

"Claire, look at the production line recovery plan on page three..."

They were very close, discussing in low voices.

The hand hanging at Miles Warren’s side tightened into a fist, then relaxed. He maintained a nonchalant expression.

"Dr. Warren," Ian Rhodes said, suddenly looking up. "If it’s convenient, the three of us would like to discuss OCHH privately. Since you’re a member of the Warren family, would you mind stepping out?"

The words were polite, but the intention to have him leave was obvious.

The atmosphere grew awkward.

Not wanting Miles Warren to be embarrassed, Claire Kendall took the initiative. "I’m craving a Coke. Dr. Warren, could you get one for me?"

Miles Warren nodded coolly. "Alright." He turned and walked out of the room.

The door closed, cutting off the sounds of conversation from within.

Miles Warren lowered his head and stood waiting by the door.

A couple of nurses pushing a cart passed by, casting several curious glances his way.

They hurried on, whispering to each other.

"What’s Dr. Warren doing standing here? Waiting for someone?"

"I think his wife is in there."

"Then why doesn’t he go in?"

...

Miles Warren ignored them.

Inside the room, the three of them were engaged in a lively discussion. After an hour of waiting, the door finally opened.

Ian Rhodes pushed Claire Kendall out.

She looked up and saw Miles Warren still standing by the door. She froze. "You didn’t leave?"

"I was waiting for you." Miles Warren stepped forward. "Mr. Rhodes, thank you for taking care of my wife."

Ian Rhodes released his grip on the wheelchair. His eyes swept over him, and a faint smile touched his lips.

"Claire, do you want to go check on the situation at the OCHH production line? A site visit is much more intuitive than looking at blueprints. I can drive you; there’s room for the wheelchair."

"Okay," she agreed, then looked at Miles Warren. "Dr. Warren, Ian and I are going to..."

Before she could finish, Miles Warren frowned, his right hand subtly pressing against his stomach in a very slight movement.

Claire Kendall saw it. "Dr. Warren, what’s wrong?"

"It’s nothing." Miles Warren lowered his hand, his expression normal. "You two go ahead."

Claire Kendall stared at him for two seconds. The man’s face was a little pale, and there was a sheen of sweat on his forehead.

She said to Ian Rhodes, "Let’s not go today. Some other time."

Ian Rhodes was taken aback. "Claire?"

"Dr. Warren doesn’t seem to be feeling well. You should head back for now. The production line isn’t urgent. Wait until I’ve finished the design drafts."

Ian Rhodes opened his mouth, then forced himself to say, "Okay."

His gaze lingered on Miles Warren’s face for a moment. Miles had his eyes lowered, his expression placid, betraying nothing.

Claire Kendall, still in her wheelchair, turned around. "Is your stomach bothering you?"

Miles Warren hummed in agreement. He then looked up, and from half a step away, gave Ian Rhodes the faintest smirk.

The smile was fleeting, but it carried the composure of a victor.

The tactic was childish, but effective.

Ian Rhodes’s expression froze for a second.

"Come on, let’s go back to the room." Claire Kendall grabbed his hand. "This is what you get for skipping breakfast again."

Miles Warren averted his gaze, his voice low. "You can remind me next time."

"You’re a doctor, and you don’t even know to eat on time?" Claire Kendall shot him an exasperated look and started pushing her own wheelchair toward the elevator. "Keep up."

He wasn’t lying. It really did hurt.

It was just that the pain had come at the perfect moment, and he was enjoying it.

Back in the suite, Claire Kendall poured Miles Warren a glass of hot water.

Miles Warren opened the photo album on his phone and found a digital diagnostic report from two months ago—an endoscopy report. The diagnosis was chronic superficial gastritis.

He didn’t lock the screen, casually placing the phone on the nightstand as if by accident.

Claire Kendall took the hot water, handed the cup to him, and her gaze swept over to the phone, then froze.

She picked up the phone, zoomed in on the text, and her expression changed.

"Chronic superficial gastritis?" she read aloud. "Miles Warren, your stomach condition is this serious?"

Miles Warren acted as if he’d just noticed her looking and reached for the phone.

"It’s nothing. It healed a long time ago."

The meals he had cooked at Regency Gardens were all her favorites, but every single dish had chili peppers.

"You have a stomach condition, yet you still eat spicy food?"

Miles Warren said quietly, "It’s fine."

Claire Kendall suddenly thought of something and said seriously.

"I understand now. Back in Quillmore, why you were suddenly upset that night, especially after I said I’d order spicy stir-fried chicken for you. It turns out you can’t eat spicy food."

Miles Warren let out an exasperated laugh.

His voice was deep, his eyes profound, but the words that came out were unbelievably suggestive.

"Are you saying I fucked you that hard because of some chili peppers?"
