Tempting Him to Lose Control

Chapter 131: Going Through the Motions

Chapter 131: Chapter 131: Going Through the Motions

The hand Claire Kendall had on his shoulder stiffened for a moment.

’He’s burning up like this, and he’s still thinking about Stella Locke. Sigh... The power of the one he never got over really can’t be underestimated.’

"Get up. I’m taking you to the hospital."

"I’m not going. You’re trying to leave me again," Miles Warren mumbled, his arms tightening around her, pulling her closer. "You lied to me."

"Lied to you ten years ago, and you’re still lying to me now?"

His body was as hot as burning charcoal. His consciousness was fading, and his voice was broken.

A heavy feeling settled in Claire’s chest. ’How could a latecomer like me ever compare to a bond that lasted ten years? It’s understandable that Miles Warren can’t forget her.’

"Snap out of it. I’m not Stella Locke."

Claire struggled twice but couldn’t break free. She didn’t dare push him away with too much force. He was so weak, she was afraid she might seriously hurt him.

The man was delirious, his scorching forehead resting in the crook of her shoulder. He whimpered softly, his every breath a searing puff of heat.

Claire looked down at his flushed face, feeling helpless.

’Fine. The one he never got over, is it?’

She stroked his back, softened her voice, and mimicked Stella Locke’s pet phrases, playing along with a cloyingly sweet tone.

"Miles~ How could I ever leave you?"

The words gave her goosebumps.

But this unorthodox method was surprisingly effective.

When Miles Warren heard her say she wouldn’t leave, his grip on her noticeably loosened. He mumbled from his throat, "Really?"

’As if!’

"Of course, Miles. You’re the best, Miles. I love you the most."

SMOOCH!

She gave him a soft peck. ’This is Stella Locke’s mess! And I’m the one who has to clean it up.’

Feeling her soft lips, Miles Warren slowly released his arms. She seized the opportunity to lean over, grab her phone from the nightstand, and dial Jonathan Keller’s number.

"Dr. Keller, Miles Warren is burning up."

"Burning up?" Jonathan Keller’s voice was groggy. "It’s the middle of the night. You don’t need to tell me about you two’s private affairs."

Claire said, "...With a fever. A high fever that won’t go down. He refuses to go to the hospital. If you don’t come soon, he might actually become an idiot."

Jonathan Keller was instantly awake. "What’s his temperature?"

"I haven’t taken it yet," Claire said, pushing him a few times but still unable to move him. "But he’s burning hot. I think it’s serious."

"I’m on my way."

After hanging up, Claire had to kiss and coddle him, whispering a stream of sweet nothings in his ear before she could finally coax him into letting her go.

She got out of bed and went to open the door for Jonathan Keller.

Jonathan Keller rushed in carrying his medical bag. Seeing Miles Warren’s condition, his expression turned serious. "It’s this bad?"

"He had a small sip of baijiu tonight, ate some sea bass and stir-fried lotus root, and then he was like this when he went to sleep."

Jonathan’s hands paused as he prepared the medication. He glanced at Claire, a little surprised that she remembered everything so clearly.

"It’s not what he ate. He’s been overworking himself for too long. His body just can’t take it anymore."

Jonathan injected a fever reducer into his muscle.

"He performed several major surgeries this week, then immediately flew to Norsen overnight. Even an immortal couldn’t handle this kind of strain."

Claire looked up, confused. "Norsen? What was he doing there?"

"He flew out to perform a minor surgery on Wallace Sutton’s mother. Why else do you think Wallace Apparel would agree to partner with OCHH?"

Claire froze slightly. No wonder someone as picky as Wallace Sutton had agreed.

"Remember to remind him to take this medicine." Jonathan Keller put the medicine down and sighed.

"Claire Kendall, why can’t you be a little nicer to him?"

The emotions she had been suppressing because of Stella Locke soured completely at Jonathan’s accusation.

’He projects the image of a perfect husband to the world, but his heart belongs to another woman. I’m the one who’s suffering here, too.’

"How am I not good to him? I just had to pretend to be the one he never got over just to calm him down."

’How many wives would go that far? I’d say I’ve been more than magnanimous.’

"You... pretended to be the one he never got over?" Jonathan was baffled. ’Was she just playing herself?’

"Alright, he should be fine now. If the fever comes back, just cool him down physically." After giving his instructions, Jonathan Keller left.

Claire walked back to the bed and touched his forehead. It was still a bit hot.

She got a damp towel. The moment it touched his forehead, he grabbed her wrist.

His grip was fierce and strong. Before she could react, she was pulled onto the bed, pinned on top of him. The man’s arm clamped around her waist, and she couldn’t move.

Claire’s heart skipped a beat as she met his eyes, which were slightly reddened from the high fever.

He just stared at her, his eyes swirling with emotions she couldn’t decipher. Hurt? Resentment? Anger?

Claire couldn’t handle his intense gaze. "Let go of me."

He didn’t speak. One hand gripped her waist while the other pressed the back of her head, moving in to kiss her by instinct.

"Miles Warren, you’re delirious... Mmph~"

He nipped at her lips, teasing and drawing her in, giving her no room to breathe. When Claire pushed him, he only kissed her more fiercely.

His already scorching body temperature rose even higher, making her break out in a sweat.

She had no idea what had gotten into him now. At a critical moment, Claire shoved him away with all her strength.

The corners of Miles Warren’s eyes were red from the fever. He looked like a large, wounded dog, all his sharp edges softened, leaving only ragged, hot breaths and an accusation, every word laced with grievance.

"Jonathan Keller was right. You’re not good to me at all."

"So I’m not going to be good to you anymore, either."

Claire’s hands were braced on his chest. Hearing his words, the light in her eyes slowly dimmed.

She poked the man’s chest, her nails digging into his hot skin. She lifted her chin, adopting a domineering posture.

"Done pretending to be a good husband? Fine—but we still have a marriage certificate. As long as I’m your wife, for even one more day, you have to be good to me."

"As long as you’re in the role, you play the part. Get it?"

Her voice grew more petulant and imperious.

"I want you to make me breakfast. I want you to do my laundry. And I want you to clean up all my messes."

She thought for a moment, then added another demand.

"And if I want to sleep with you, you’d better strip naked and wait for me. Understand?"

The man beneath her stared back, his eyes hazy.
