Tempting Him to Lose Control

Chapter 133: Protecting His Wife

Chapter 133: Chapter 133: Protecting His Wife

The faint sound of Louis Warren’s angry rebuke could be heard from the other end of the line. Yvonne Warren raised an eyebrow, smirking at Claire Kendall with a smug expression.

The moment she hung up, Claire Kendall’s phone began to vibrate.

She answered the call, and Louis Warren’s imperious voice boomed through the receiver.

"Claire Kendall, the Warren family’s power is not for you to flaunt!"

"Come back to the main house at once. Stop embarrassing Miles out in public."

Claire Kendall refused. "I have things to do at the company later."

"Things to do at the company?" Louis Warren sneered. "You call that mess at OCHH ’things to do’? If you don’t come back, I’ll have someone come get you!"

The call disconnected, and the BEEP BEEP of the busy signal echoed in Claire Kendall’s ear.

"Claire, are you okay?" Sharon Carter asked with a worried expression. "I’ll go back with you, help take some of the heat."

"I’m fine. It’s just a trip to the main house. Take your pick of the jewelry we just bought. Please give them to your aunt for me and wish her a happy birthday."

Sharon Carter nodded. "Alright. Call me immediately if anything happens. I’ll come pick you up."

Claire Kendall had the clerk package the purchased jewelry and send it to Regency Gardens, then she turned and left.

Yvonne Warren stood at the shop entrance, arms crossed, deliberately raising her voice.

"Why bother? Spending someone else’s money to act like a big shot, only to go home and get scolded."

Joanne Sutton gloated, "Claire Kendall, you’re just some plaything Mr. Warren married on a whim. Don’t tell me you actually think you’re the young mistress of the house? How ridiculous."

Claire Kendall paused, her tone flat.

"Joanne Sutton, it seems you’ve already forgotten the pain of your lesson. You don’t remember what Miles Warren warned you about, do you? I wouldn’t mind whispering a few things in his ear."

Joanne Sutton gritted her teeth, her face paling. She didn’t dare say another word.

Her days of being blacklisted in Aethel had been unbearable; she couldn’t find a sponsor or a job anywhere. If she hadn’t latched onto Yvonne Warren, she probably wouldn’t even be able to afford a meal right now.

「Dusk. The Warren family’s main house was enveloped in a faint golden light.」

Guided by the butler, Claire Kendall entered the tea room in the rear courtyard.

Yvonne Warren had arrived before her and was sitting on a nearby sofa, waiting for the show to begin.

Louis Warren slammed his teacup down on the table.

"Six million, five hundred and forty thousand. The Warren family isn’t short on that kind of money, but you need to consider whether you’re worthy of spending it!"

"Getting into a bidding war out of spite, lording it over your own niece... Claire Kendall, you’ve really got some nerve."

Claire Kendall didn’t look up. With her eyes lowered, her voice was cold and calm.

"First, it was Yvonne Warren who humiliated and provoked me. Second, I was spending Miles Warren’s money, which is our marital property. He didn’t stop me, so it’s certainly not anyone else’s place to."

Louis Warren slammed his hand on the table, sending tea splashing from the cups.

"Insolent! Is that any way to speak to an elder?"

"Apologize to Yvonne right now! If you dare to disobey, I’ll bankrupt OCHH immediately!"

Claire Kendall stood rooted to the spot. She forced herself to turn to Yvonne Warren, her voice strained. "I’m sorry."

Yvonne Warren slowly poured a cup of scalding hot tea. "Claire Kendall, that apology wasn’t very sincere, was it?"

"Here. Take this tea and serve it to me as a sign of respect."

Wisps of steam coiled up from the teacup like fiery serpents.

Louis Warren’s eyes narrowed slightly. He coughed twice, knowing Yvonne Warren was going too far, but he didn’t stop her.

"Claire Kendall, now that you’ve married into the Warren family, you need to understand one thing: whether you’re a dragon or a tiger, in this house, you learn to heel."

Louis Warren narrowed his eyes, paused, and then changed his tune.

"However, if you’re willing to persuade Miles to come back and take over the business, you won’t have to serve this tea. And I can also solve your problems with OCHH."

"We can still be a peaceful, happy family, and you can still be the young mistress of the Warren family."

Claire Kendall shot Louis Warren a cool glance, said nothing, and walked straight toward the teacup.

She reached out, her pale fingertips just about to touch the scorching cup.

The next second, a hand seized her wrist.

Miles Warren’s breathing was uneven, a clear sign he had rushed over. He brought a chill with him into the room.

He took Claire Kendall’s hand and examined it carefully. Seeing no injury, the fierce look in his eyes relaxed ever so slightly.

Claire Kendall wiggled her fingers in his palm, a little bewildered. "What are you doing here?"

"Sharon Carter called me."

"Miles, Claire Kendall was the one in the wrong today—"

Before the old man could finish, Yvonne Warren shrieked and jumped up from the sofa.

Miles Warren had picked up the teacup and thrown its contents next to her. The hot tea didn’t scald her, but it scared her half to death.

"Miles Warren, are you insane? That’s your own niece!"

Miles Warren released her, placing a large, reassuring hand on her shoulder. His voice was low, as if coaxing a child.

"Go wait for me outside. There’s a swing set in the courtyard. Go sit there for a while."

Claire Kendall started to say something, but he cut her off.

"Be good."

She hesitated for a moment, then nodded and obediently turned to leave.

Miles Warren closed the tea room door, shutting out all sound.

Yvonne Warren ran to Louis Warren’s side, clutching her soaked dress and sobbing.

Louis Warren’s face was as dark as it could be. "Miles Warren, are you so protective of her now that you won’t even listen to reason?"

Miles Warren took out a document and placed it on the tea table.

Louis Warren looked down and froze. Beside him, Yvonne Warren was stunned as well.

_Warren Group Asset Forfeiture Agreement_

"I’ve already signed this document. From now on, the Warren Group’s resources, connections, and assets have nothing to do with me."

Louis Warren shot to his feet, so furious his vision swam. He smashed a teacup.

"Miles Warren, you’d give up the Warren Group for a woman?"

Miles Warren looked at him, his eyes exceptionally calm.

"I knew you would never let me marry someone from an ordinary background. I signed this document eight years ago."

A slight smile touched Miles Warren’s lips.

’I just never expected it would take this many years to finally be of use.’

His words were steady. "You started to like her because I was willing to marry her. You only ever saw her as a tool to persuade me. Now that you’ve discovered she’s beyond your control, you’ve started to belittle and bully her."

"But from now on, the Warren Group has nothing to do with me. You don’t need to use it to give her a hard time, threaten her, or treat her with contempt anymore."

The man turned to leave.

"Miles Warren! Miles Warren!" Louis Warren roared twice.

"If you dare walk out that door today, I’ll give the company to your older brother tomorrow!"

"I’ll issue a statement and disown you! Without the Warren family, you’re nothing in Aethel!"

"You’ll hit rock bottom! Your dignity will be worthless, and no one will ever take you, Miles Warren, seriously again!"

Miles Warren stopped in his tracks.

"You care about dignity and reputation, which is why my mother waited twenty years for you in vain."

"Also, don’t make too big a fuss with your statement. It’s enough if people in our circle know."

"And most importantly, don’t let her find out."

He pushed open the door to the tea room.

The old man erupted in a fit of rage, grabbing a bronze ornament from the table and hurling it viciously at Miles Warren. "You ungrateful whelp!"

The ornament whistled through the air and struck the back of the man’s left knee, its sharp edges tearing through his suit trousers.

His body went stiff. He grabbed the doorframe for support, his knuckles turning white as a piercing pain shot through his left leg.

Louis Warren froze as well, watching the bloodstain spread on Miles’s trousers. His lips moved, but no words came out.

Miles Warren didn’t look back. None of it had anything to do with him anymore.

The only person in his eyes, in his heart, was the woman on the swing set in the corner of the courtyard.
