Chapter 146: Chapter 146: Poor Little Aunt
The man was momentarily stunned by Claire’s reckless abandon, but he quickly recovered and charged forward again, screaming obscenities.
Claire instinctively raised her hand to block, but the expected pain never came.
Miles yanked her behind him and, with his other hand, decisively shoved the lunging man away.
The man stumbled back several steps before crashing into a bench with a pained howl.
They had been hitting and cursing Miles for so long, yet he had remained silent the entire time, not even uttering a single word in his own defense.
Security had to pull them apart, and no one had expected him to suddenly get physical.
Miles looked at her, his voice a little hoarse. "Why did you jump in front of me?"
Claire turned her head to look at him. ’The child he’d personally tried to save was gone. His pain, his grief, his self-recrimination—it couldn’t be any less than what the family was feeling.’
’He had to endure the tirade from the grieving family while desperately trying to remain calm and composed.’
’Every patient he couldn’t save was his fault.’
Her heart ached for him. Claire murmured, "Miles..."
"You two are a pair of murderers! Neither of you is any good!"
The family members, restrained by security, continued to scream abuse. The crowd of onlookers was growing, and sympathy was shifting toward the family of the baby girl.
Shielding Claire, Miles spoke in his own defense for the first time.
"I have reviewed the entire surgical procedure three times. There were no errors in the operation."
"The child’s vital signs were stable when she left the resuscitation room. The issue likely arose during the observation period, which will require a pathological review."
"She is not a medical professional. Do not involve her in this."
Miles ignored them, his gaze dropping to Claire.
The churning emotions in his eyes threatened to drown Claire, and her heart clenched in pain.
"Go home. Go back to Regency Gardens. Don’t worry about any of this."
Jonathan Keller hurried over, his tone grave.
"Miles, the administration just sent out a notice. You’re suspended for the time being, pending the results of the investigation."
"The medical affairs department also received a complaint. They’ve already called the police; they intend to hold you liable for medical malpractice."
Claire’s eyes reddened, and she bit her lip. "Miles, you..."
"Listen to me. Don’t be afraid. I’ll handle it," he cut her off, his voice steady.
He went to the police station voluntarily to cooperate with the investigation. The result was temporary detention.
Jonathan Keller rubbed his temples. "Cooperating with an investigation is standard procedure. Miles has performed countless surgeries, and this is the first time he’s run into anything like this. It’s highly likely he was set up by someone..."
He trailed off. "Just do as he says and go home for now. I’ll keep an eye on things here."
Jonathan Keller hurried away. Just then, Claire’s phone rang. It was Wallace Sutton.
"Mr. Sutton." She forced some energy into her voice.
OCHH was now caught in the eye of the storm again, and she assumed Wallace Sutton was calling to discuss terminating their contract.
"Ms. Kendall, don’t you worry about OCHH. I’ll take care of it. Lawyers, media, public relations—you don’t need to lift a finger."
Wallace Sutton added, "And if you need a new injection of capital, Wallace is more than willing to provide it."
"Dr. Warren called me this morning. He’d already arranged everything."
Claire’s pupils contracted.
’He arranged all this in advance, in such a short amount of time?’
’He’d laid out a clear escape path for her. She had no idea how he’d managed to persuade Wallace Sutton, to get Wallace to agree to be OCHH’s safety net.’
’But what about him? He hadn’t prepared anything for himself, just letting the police take him away like that.’
Claire’s mind was reeling. "Thank you, Mr. Sutton," she managed to say.
The sunlight was blinding. Claire tried to find the infant’s family to talk, but they flatly refused to communicate, screaming that they would see to it that Miles Warren was utterly disgraced.
Just as she left the hospital, Claire received a call from Bobby.
The little boy was crying so hard he could barely breathe.
"Fairy Princess, *sob*, that big meanie Victor Warren told Grandpa that Uncle Miles is a murderer."
"*Sob*... I don’t believe it. It’s not true, is it?"
Claire quickly soothed him. "Bobby, your uncle is a doctor. How could he possibly be a murderer? They’re just spouting nonsense."
"But they’re going to release some kind of statement for him, saying they’re going to admit he killed someone and give that family lots and lots of money..."
"I called Mom, but her assistant said she’s still on the plane and hasn’t landed yet."
A shiver ran through Claire, and her mind snapped into focus.
’The Warren Group is going to take the blame for Miles?’
’If they admit to this, Miles’s career—his entire future—will be completely ruined.’
’What in the world is the Warren family trying to do?’
Claire hung up and stormed over to the family estate.
The butler came to greet her. "Ms. Kendall, you..."
"Where is Louis Warren? I need to see him!"
"The master isn’t seeing anyone. He’s resting."
Ignoring him, Claire marched straight to the teahouse in the backyard.
Even through the door, she could hear Louis Warren’s delighted laughter.
Claire’s hands balled into fists as her anger surged. She charged forward and shoved the sliding door open.
Victor Warren was standing beside the tea table, clutching a document.
Emblazoned across the top were the words: *Public Apology from the Warren Group Regarding the Medical Malpractice Incident of Miles Warren*.
Claire was trembling with rage.
"The hospital’s investigation isn’t even finished, yet you’re actually rushing to release something like this!"
Victor Warren looked at her, not the least bit abashed, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Sister-in-law, perfect timing. You can sign this for him. Once we release the statement, the Warren family’s losses can be minimized."
"He did nothing wrong. There’s no reason to admit to anything."
"Even if the Warren family refuses to help him, you can’t kick him while he’s down. Warren, Miles is your own son!"
Warren snorted coldly. "Now you remember I’m his father? A son who can’t inherit the Warren Group might as well not be my son at all."
"However..." Louis Warren swept a cold glance over Claire. "If you want me to save him, that’s an option. Divorce him."
’Divorce?’
Claire’s fingernails dug into her palms, and her voice was firm and icy.
"Never."
"Dad, Grandpa, don’t be angry. It’s not worth getting worked up over Miles."
A strange man rose from the sofa and sauntered over to Claire, stopping a little too close for comfort.
Claire frowned and took half a step back.
The man was tall and thin. He wore a flashy floral shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, with a conspicuous silver cross necklace hanging around his neck.
"So, this must be my young and beautiful auntie, hmm?"
His gaze, as slick and greasy as a snake, slithered down Claire’s body from head to toe.
It lingered on her chest and slender waist, his eyes full of undisguised lewdness as he sized her up.
Victor Warren made the introduction. "Sister-in-law, this is my son. He was raised abroad. We just brought him back yesterday."
"Felix, this is your uncle’s wife."
A lecherous glint appeared in Felix Warren’s smile as he deliberately drew out his words.
"So it really *is* my dear little auntie."
Claire looked at Louis Warren, and everything suddenly clicked into place.
’She understood why his attitude had changed so drastically.’
’Although Bobby was his grandson, he was his daughter’s child—a maternal grandson, which always carried a subtle distance. Besides, he was still just a boy. Now, Victor Warren’s illegitimate son had returned, a young man around the same age as Miles.’
’Now that Louis Warren had a new heir, why would he care about his "disobedient" son, Miles? He would even seize this opportunity to kick him while he was down.’
’This family... the Warrens were truly rotten to the core!’
Felix Warren looked at Louis Warren with a wide, simpering grin.
"Grandpa, you said yesterday that I’d been wronged all these years I was abroad, and that you’d grant me one request."
"I think we should help my dear auntie. She’s just so... pitiful."
Felix Warren looked at Claire’s red-rimmed eyes and her defiant expression, finding the sight utterly fascinating.
’A half-shattered beauty. How I’d love to be the one to break the other half.’
