Chapter 34: Chapter 34: This Size Is Too Small
Miles Warren lowered his gaze to the hand clutching his shirt.
’Her damsel-in-distress act is getting more and more convincing,’ he thought.
He pursed his thin lips, nodded, and let out a soft "Mm" in agreement.
She was secretly overjoyed, a sly smile playing in her eyes.
She finally understood the feeling of a blessing in disguise.
The building management sent someone to clean up the water damage, and the power to apartment 502 was temporarily shut off.
Claire Kendall, in her soaked slippers, followed behind Miles Warren. They both looked like they’d just been fished out of the water.
They entered apartment 501.
Miles Warren handed her a clean towel.
"Go take a shower. There are new toiletries in the closet."
Claire Kendall nodded eagerly. By now, she was completely familiar with the guest bedroom in Miles Warren’s apartment.
After her shower, she changed into a set of clean clothes.
Miles Warren had also changed into a fresh set of casual clothes and was standing in the living room, car keys in hand.
"You’ll be staying for a while, and we’re missing some things. Let’s go out and buy some necessities together."
Claire Kendall agreeably nodded.
’Just like in a TV drama,’ she mused, ’shopping for daily necessities is the first step of moving in together.’
「A shopping mall near Regency Gardens.」
Claire Kendall walked with a light spring in her step, while Miles Warren pushed the shopping cart, following behind her.
He watched as she tossed all sorts of colorful and peculiar little items into the cart.
"Dr. Warren, your cups are so cold and impersonal." She picked up a fluffy brown teddy bear mug. "Should we use these? One for you, and one for me."
"The four-piece bedding set in the guest room is too drab. It’s bad for sleep quality."
Without waiting for an answer, she grabbed a set printed with little strawberries and stuffed it into the cart.
Miles Warren’s gaze fell on the steadily filling shopping cart.
Bright colors, soft textures, childish patterns...
They all clashed with his home, which was composed of only black, white, and gray, with cold, hard lines.
But strangely, as Miles Warren pictured these items invading his sterile space, he didn’t feel annoyed.
Instead, a strange warmth seeped into the dry corners of his heart.
’Is this what a ’home’ feels like?’
At the end of the daily necessities aisle, around the corner, was the shelf for family planning products.
Claire Kendall’s steps faltered, her heartbeat turning a little erratic.
’Condoms... Miles Warren probably doesn’t have any at his place.’
’Now that I’m living here, even though progress is slow, it’s always good to be prepared.’
’What if one day the time is right, the mood is perfect, and sparks start to fly...?’
While Miles Warren was looking down at his phone replying to a message, Claire Kendall quickly grabbed a box and tossed it into the most inconspicuous corner of the cart.
’The "meal" hadn’t even started "cooking," but the "bowls" were already set out. Her dedication to planning ahead was almost a professional virtue.’
Feeling a bit like a thief with a guilty conscience, Claire Kendall peeked at the man out of the corner of her eye. He had just finished his message and was putting his phone away.
The next second, the man’s sharp gaze swept over the contents of the cart.
Claire Kendall’s heart leaped into her throat.
Miles Warren’s long fingers reached into the cart, pushed aside the soft, strawberry-patterned bedding, and precisely...
...plucked out the small, square box she had just hidden.
He held the box between his fingertips, raising it to a spot between the two of them.
The bright supermarket lights clearly illuminated the word on the packaging.
Ultra-thin.
Miles Warren raised an eyebrow, his gaze slowly shifting from the box.
It landed on Claire Kendall’s blushing face, which looked hot enough to steam.
His eyes were deep, and the corners of his lips curved into a meaningful smile.
"Ms. Kendall, is this also a daily necessity?"
"Very thorough preparation."
"However..." he paused, his eyes catching the size marked on the box. A hint of a smile rippled through his deep eyes.
"This size... is too small."
In an instant, a blush spread from Claire Kendall’s cheeks all the way down to her neck, so hot it felt like she was on fire.
It was only then that she realized she was completely out of her league compared to Miles Warren.
-
「Regency Gardens.」
Miles Warren carried two large bags of groceries and headed straight for the kitchen.
He carefully rinsed the pair of brown teddy bear mugs and placed them on the drying rack.
He picked up the strawberry bedding set and turned toward the laundry room. "I’ll wash and dry this before putting it on the bed."
His movements were practiced and methodical.
Claire Kendall changed her shoes and shuffled over to the kitchen entrance.
She propped her elbows on the cool marble countertop, rested her chin in her hands, and watched Miles Warren’s busy figure without blinking.
The man wore gray loungewear, his broad shoulders tapering to a narrow waist. His sleeves were rolled up, revealing a pair of strong forearms.
A sly yet soft smile appeared in Claire Kendall’s eyes. Her voice was sweet and gentle.
"Dr. Warren..."
Miles Warren, who was cooking in the kitchen, answered with a rising intonation, "Hmm?"
Claire Kendall said with a grin, "You have a real ’husband’ vibe right now. Ever considered officially becoming one?"
She patted herself, nominating herself for the role.
Miles Warren turned back to his cooking, ignoring her.
Claire Kendall snorted inwardly. ’Stoic man. Let’s see how long you can hold out.’
Two bowls of steaming, delicious-looking noodles were ready.
"Come on, time to eat," Miles Warren called out.
Claire Kendall obediently sat across from him. After eating for a moment, her gaze fell on the man’s fingers as he picked up noodles with his chopsticks.
They were well-defined, fair, and slender.
She started teasing him again. "Dr. Warren, you have really nice hands."
"Is that so?" Miles Warren’s voice betrayed no emotion as he stood up and reached his hand out toward her.
Claire Kendall instinctively tensed up, then relaxed.
’Are those family planning supplies going to be used so soon?’
She didn’t shy away. Tilting her head back to reveal the graceful curve of her slender neck, she leaned in, bit by bit, in a gesture of proactive invitation.
Her neck was the most vulnerable spot, a place that could easily evoke a man’s protective instincts.
The next second, that hand went straight past her cheek, past her still slightly damp hair, and brushed against her neck...
...before firmly picking up the porcelain bowl in front of her.
"If you’re full, go rest. And try to think less lewd thoughts."
The man took her noodle bowl away.
"Miles Warren!" Claire Kendall cried out, mortified.
Her face and ears turned red, and the blush spread downwards, coloring even her neck a faint pink.
In the kitchen, Miles Warren stood at the sink, staring at the two noodle bowls inside.
He lowered his gaze, his fingertips unconsciously rubbing together.
It was as if the alluring scent of her neck still lingered there.
’In truth, he had long wanted to bite down hard, to hear her cry out in pain and beg for mercy...’
On the sofa, Claire Kendall scooted to the edge, deliberately making room for Miles Warren.
The man sat down beside her, holding a tablet, preparing to analyze some case files.
His gaze flickered to Claire Kendall’s laptop screen, landing on the dense columns of price quotes.
"Haven’t found a suitable one?"
Claire Kendall nodded, looking overwhelmed.
’That move by Jacob Sinclair was so nasty and underhanded.’
Miles Warren’s tone was even as he casually mentioned, "In two days, it’s my grandfather’s 80th birthday."
Claire Kendall’s fingers, which had been tapping on the keyboard, paused.
’Louis Warren’s birthday banquet?’
’The embroidered calligraphy background she had promised Louis Warren wasn’t even started yet. If she used that piece of Flowing Light Brocade the village chief gave her...’
It was a perfect opportunity to showcase her work and make new connections.
The immense surprise made her brain go into overdrive, and her body reacted before her mind could catch up.
She shot up from the sofa, leaning forward like a reckless butterfly, and threw herself at the man beside her.
"Dr. Warren, you’re my savior!"
"SMOOCH!"
Claire Kendall planted a kiss on his cheek.
It was a soft sound, but in the quiet living room, it was crystal clear.
It was as if time itself had been paused in that moment.
Miles Warren’s fingers, which were holding the tablet, suddenly tightened. He froze, remaining perfectly still in the position he’d been in, head turned slightly to look at her.
In those usually calm eyes, a tidal wave of emotions was churning.
Her gaze was fiery and open.
"Thank you~" she said, her voice lilting upwards at the end, so soft it made the heart tremble.
