Tempting Him to Lose Control

Chapter 40: Half the Warren Family is All Yours

Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Half the Warren Family is All Yours

Miles Warren had no time for his nonsense.

"Stop spouting nonsense. Get me a glass of warm water."

Inside the emergency ward, Claire Kendall was still fast asleep.

He felt her forehead. The fever had broken.

"Dr. Warren, what are you doing in the ER?"

Miles Warren turned. It was Director Linden, followed by several department heads and other doctors on their morning rounds.

Rosalind Linden stood by Director Linden’s side, her gaze fixed intently on Miles Warren.

But when she saw the person in the bed, the light in her eyes vanished, replaced by a gloomy shadow.

Miles Warren greeted him calmly. "Director Linden. I’m off today. A friend of mine is sick, so I brought her to the emergency room."

Director Linden’s sharp gaze swept over Claire Kendall.

When he saw the oversized men’s pajamas she was wearing, a flicker of displeasure crossed his eyes.

"Dr. Warren, come out here a moment. I need to have a private word with you."

Miles Warren nodded and followed him.

In a secluded emergency stairwell, Director Linden’s voice was laced with pressure and a hint of warning.

"Miles, you’re a specially recruited doctor at this hospital with a boundless future ahead of you. It’s fine to care for a friend, but you need to keep your personal and professional lives separate. You have to be mindful of appearances."

Director Linden sighed, then spoke earnestly, getting straight to the point.

"Rosalind has known you for many years. Whether you were studying abroad or came back here to start your career, she has always been quietly by your side. You understand her feelings, don’t you?"

"She even fell gravely ill recently because you rejected her. In terms of family background, education, and devotion to you... is all that not enough to compete with some ordinary designer?"

"Miles, even if you agreed to be with her, your family... Mr. Warren would never consent to it."

The Warrens of Aethel are a family of great prestige. How could they possibly let a Cinderella marry in? Fairy tales are just that—tales.

The stairwell was dimly lit, obscuring Miles Warren’s expression.

He merely listened in silence. Only when Director Linden had finished did he slowly lift his gaze.

"Director Linden, you’re mistaken. I’m off duty today, not on the clock. This isn’t a case of mixing my personal and professional life."

"As for your daughter, Rosalind Linden, we were classmates in university. Now that we’re back, we are colleagues."

His tone was resolute. "I have already made my position perfectly clear to Dr. Linden."

His rejection was crisp and direct, leaving no room for negotiation.

Director Linden’s face instantly darkened, his complexion turning ashen. As fury surged through him, he abandoned all subtlety.

"Dr. Warren, the hospital thinks very highly of you. There are certain opportunities you should know how to grasp. Don’t let irrelevant matters cloud your judgment."

"You’ll regret it for the rest of your life if this ruins your future."

It was a naked threat.

But Miles Warren simply looked at him, a cold smile playing on his lips, and asked in a slow, deliberate tone.

"So, Director Linden, are you trying to give me a helpful hint... or are you threatening the Warren family?"

The words "the Warren family" were spoken casually, but they landed like a sledgehammer on Director Linden’s heart.

He froze, his breath catching in his throat.

Miles Warren had a cool, aloof temperament. He never put on airs at the hospital or brought up his family background.

He was so low-key that people almost forgot he was the person Louis Warren treasured most in the world.

A commotion erupted from beyond the stairwell door.

A booming voice called out.

"Miles? Where’s Miles?"

At the far end of the hallway, an elderly man in an understated yet luxurious Tang suit approached, flanked by bodyguards.

It was Louis Warren himself.

Director Linden’s heart pounded. He immediately put on his most attentive and deferential expression.

"Mr. Warren, what brings you here? Is something wrong? I can arrange for a team of specialists to examine you immediately."

He waved a dismissive hand. "I’m here for Miles."

Miles Warren emerged from the stairwell, unhurried. His voice was low. "It’s a hospital. Be quiet."

Like a schoolboy being reprimanded, the old man immediately lowered his voice. "Yes, yes, of course..."

"How’s Claire? Is she all right?"

Director Linden’s heart sank. Beside him, Rosalind Linden’s face fell.

’Louis Warren actually came for Claire Kendall? And he calls her by such an intimate name.’

In the ward, Claire Kendall had just regained consciousness and was sitting up against the headboard, her expression still a bit dazed.

Louis Warren walked in briskly.

Director Linden and the crowd of hospital administrators followed, holding their breath in anticipation.

The old man wore an apologetic smile. "My dear, about yesterday... the Warren family failed to handle the matter properly."

"Those people..." Louis Warren paused. "They’ve... disappeared. But I’ve already notified the police. I promise you’ll get justice."

Louis Warren was eighty years old and a man of immense status, yet he was apologizing to a young woman?!

The crowd behind him watched in stunned silence.

Claire Kendall, completely taken aback, quickly shook her head.

"Mr. Warren, please don’t say that. This had nothing to do with you."

She tried to get up, but Miles Warren swiftly pushed her gently back down.

Seeing Miles’s concern for Claire, and then noticing the pajamas she was wearing, Louis Warren’s eyes lit up with elation.

’This could work. This could definitely work!’

’If Miles and Claire get married and have children, she could convince him to quit medicine and come back into the business. Then I could hand the Warren Group over to him with a clear conscience.’

Striking while the iron was hot, Louis Warren affectionately took Claire’s hand, his tone turning into a sort of childish plea.

"My dear girl, please, talk some sense into Miles. Tell him not to be angry with this old man anymore. Ask him to come home more often, won’t you?"

Claire instinctively glanced at Miles Warren. Though his expression was cold, he didn’t contradict his grandfather.

She smiled and nodded. "Alright, Mr. Warren. I’ll try..."

"That’s the spirit!" Louis Warren’s face broke into a wide smile as he crooked a finger at the butler behind him.

The butler immediately handed over a file folder.

"There’s also this. It’s about those raw material suppliers we discussed yesterday."

"These top-tier silk and pearl fiber suppliers will all enter long-term, exclusive contracts with you. You can have as many raw materials as you want."

"As for the price... just consider it my gift of apology. It won’t cost you a dime."

Claire’s eyes widened, and she hurriedly tried to refuse. "No, absolutely not. This is too valuable."

Top-grade mulberry silk and pearl fiber were some of the most expensive materials in the industry.

’A long-term, free supply? This gift is too generous.’

"Silly girl, don’t refuse. If you really feel that bad, you can just make me a few more embroidered pieces in the future. Then I can show them off and save some face!"

As he spoke, he snuck a glance at Miles Warren. Just as he’d expected, his son’s expression had softened considerably.

Louis Warren understood. ’It seems the key to winning Miles over and coaxing him back to the company,’ he thought, ’is winning this girl over first.’
