Chapter 43: Chapter 43: This Pose is Too Dangerous
The screen opposite her instantly went black. Vivian had logged off in disgrace.
Meanwhile, the number of viewers in Moonstone’s stream skyrocketed to over a hundred thousand, and the live comments went completely insane.
[Holy crap, one person donated almost a million!]
[And it’s a new account, without even a profile picture or a name. That’s a real whale.]
[From level 0 to level 70 in two minutes?]
[Boss Zmyqq, I kneel before you!]
[But has anyone noticed how calm the Moonstone streamer is? That was a million.]
[The main thing is the Flowing Light Brocade! It’s seriously gorgeous.]
Claire Kendall smiled at the camera. "Thank you all for your support, and a special thanks to a certain someone for their overwhelming generosity. That’s all for today’s stream. If you enjoyed it, please feel free to follow us."
Claire Kendall clicked to send a private message to "Zmyqq."
Miles Warren’s phone vibrated—*You have a new private message from Moonstone Studio.*
The man lowered his eyes and opened it.
[Thanks for the million, big spender. Are you free tonight?]
Miles Warren stared at the words, his eyes gradually darkening.
The next second, a soft, fragrant whisper brushed past the shell of his ear.
"So, my number one supporter... you interested?"
Claire Kendall leaned down, plucked Miles Warren’s Bluetooth earbud out, and pressed her lips close to his ear.
"Z-m-y-q-q?"
She enunciated the ID, letter by letter.
Miles Warren’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He neither confirmed nor denied it, simply staring at her slightly flushed face, now just inches from his.
"Did you win?" he asked, his voice low and raspy.
"With Dr. Warren on my side, there was never any doubt." Her hand didn’t pull away, but instead slid smoothly to the nape of his neck.
"I did make you spend an awful lot, though. One million. Wexall Village is just getting started. How long will it take me to earn that back to repay you?"
He turned his head, averting his gaze. "You don’t have to pay me back."
He wanted to push her away, to maintain a proper distance so they could speak normally.
But not only did Claire Kendall not back away, she used the momentum of his arm, let her knees go weak, and sat right down on his lap, facing him directly.
Miles Warren’s body went rigid.
The position was far too intimate, and far too dangerous.
"A debt this big... I can’t just let it go unpaid..."
Her hand pressed against the man’s chest, her voice sweet and coquettish. "How about I pay you back with my body?"
Beneath her palm, Miles Warren’s reaction was far hotter than she’d ever imagined.
The pace of his heartbeat was so frantic it was nearly erratic.
’He must like me at least a little, right?’
The man’s breathing grew noticeably heavier, and the desire swirling in his eyes nearly broke through his composure.
"Claire Kendall, do you have any idea what you’re doing?"
"Of course I do," she said, blinking with an innocent expression.
But beneath that innocence was a blatant invitation. "Dr. Warren, what I want to do is much more than just this..."
The man’s eyes grew darker and darker. Everything was spiraling toward the edge of control.
RING RING RING!
The sharp, piercing ringtone shattered the moment.
The name "Wendy White" was flashing on the screen.
She wouldn’t be calling this late unless it was urgent.
Clarity instantly returned to Claire Kendall’s eyes, and she shot to her feet.
Miles Warren’s arms were suddenly empty. The hand gripping her waist loosened, the soft, supple feeling still lingering on his fingertips.
He closed his eyes, forcefully suppressing the storm raging within him.
And a flicker of irritation at being interrupted.
’She, on the other hand, got away fast...’
"Hello, Wendy."
Before Claire Kendall could finish her sentence, Wendy White’s panicked voice burst from the phone.
"Claire, you—you didn’t turn off your stream! The mic is off, but the camera’s still on! What you were just doing with... it was all broadcast live!"
Claire Kendall’s mind went blank with a deafening buzz.
She whipped her head around to look at her computer screen.
The streaming software was minimized, but the indicator light in the bottom-right corner was still glowing.
She scrambled over, but it was too late. There were over a hundred thousand people in the stream.
[Can’t see the guy’s face, but just from his hand, he looks so handsome.]
[I’m shipping this so hard I’m dizzy! A hot guy and a gorgeous girl are the best eye candy.]
[Which buzzkill had to call? I wanna see things heat up! I wanna see things heat up!]
...
The past two minutes had been broadcast live.
Over a hundred thousand people saw it?
Claire Kendall’s embarrassment and shame erupted like a volcano. She frantically shut down the stream.
But that wasn’t enough. Just in case, she yanked the power cord right out of the wall.
’I should just throw the computer out the window.’
’I really just want to run away.’
"Claire Kendall," Miles Warren called out to her. "The computer, your phone, the drawing tablet... you don’t want them anymore? Or are you planning to never stream again?"
His voice was tinged with a deliberately teasing smile.
Claire Kendall rushed over in a few steps, hugged her equipment to her chest, and wore an expression that said life was no longer worth living.
"Don’t panic. I’ll have someone take care of the video."
"Th... Thanks!" Claire Kendall turned and fled back to the guest room, burying herself under the covers.
Miles Warren picked up his phone and looked at the private message Moonstone Studio had sent him.
He tapped the screen and replied.
[Zmyqq: We still have a date. Why are you running?]
The accidental broadcast, unexpectedly, gained Moonstone Studio another million followers. Many people learned about embroidery because of it and started placing orders.
Claire Kendall could only console herself with the thought that ’bad publicity is still publicity.’
She buried herself in her work, creating more than a dozen final product designs for the Flowing Light Brocade for The Wexall Textile Mill. She gave them to Mayor Cole to take back so they could begin production.
A sudden phone call shattered the silence.
"Is this a relative of Shirley Kendall? The patient is on the hospital roof. She’s extremely agitated and threatening to jump! You need to get here immediately!"
—
The wind howled across the rooftop.
Claire Kendall’s legs were jelly by the time she burst onto the roof.
Shirley Kendall was standing on the other side of the railing.
"Mom, what are you doing?"
The woman turned. Seeing her daughter, tears instantly streamed down her face, but she only grew more agitated and took another half-step back.
"Claire, don’t come over here. I’m just a burden to you. Once I’m dead, your life will be easier..."
Claire Kendall’s eyes reddened. "Mom, what are you talking about?"
"This old life of mine isn’t worth anything. As long as my daughter is safe, that’s all that matters."
Claire Kendall tried to rush forward but was held back by nurses and security guards.
Miles Warren had just finished a six-hour surgery. Without even changing out of his scrubs, he sprinted straight to the rooftop.
Jonathan Keller followed close behind him. "A nurse noticed she was gone during rounds. We checked the security footage and found her. She’s been sitting up here for nearly two hours."
Miles Warren nodded and took a few steps forward.
"Ma’am," he said. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried a steady, reassuring strength.
"Please, listen to me. We’ve found a kidney match for you. You can’t do something foolish at a time like this. Don’t you want to see Claire get married and have children?"
The last sentence hit its mark.
A flicker of light appeared in her clouded eyes. "Really? You’re not lying to me...?"
"I don’t lie. If you don’t believe me, come back over and see for yourself." Miles Warren’s tone was resolute.
Shirley Kendall was finally wavering. Trembling, she grabbed the railing and tried to climb back over.
But she had been standing on the ledge for too long. Her legs were numb, and combined with the drastic emotional swings, her footing gave way, and she tipped backward.
"Mom!" Claire Kendall’s scream caught in her throat.
In an instant, Miles Warren had already lunged forward.
Half his body hung over the railing, his left hand gripping Shirley Kendall’s wrist for dear life while his right hand held the railing for leverage.
CRACK—
The sound of a bone popping out of its socket echoed in the air.
