Tempting Him to Lose Control

Chapter 47: Claire Kendall, It Ends Here

Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Claire Kendall, It Ends Here

Miles Warren’s hand wrapped securely around the girl’s wrist, gently pulling her onto the pool deck.

When the girl saw who it was, she was overcome with a mixture of shock and delight, her eyes bursting with ecstatic joy.

She pressed against him, her body pliant, her voice coquettish.

"Thank you, Mr. Warren. Your suit is wet. Let me dry it for you~"

Miles Warren’s expression was indifferent. "Mm," he said, his voice low.

The girl grew excited. "Mr. Warren, the changing room is this way."

His gaze swept coldly over the figure still in the middle of the pool before he turned away indifferently and followed the girl.

A heavy feeling settled in Claire Kendall’s chest, as if she’d been punched repeatedly.

It wasn’t that he hadn’t seen her; he had chosen to ignore her.

He was deliberately getting back at her.

Composing herself, she looked toward Ethan Lynch, who was standing by the pool with an ashen face. A mist of tears welled in her eyes, a mixture of grievance and helplessness, and her voice trembled.

"Ethan, I can’t get out. I’m cold..."

Ethan Lynch had been seething with anger, but seeing her so pitiful and helpless, his heart softened, and a familiar stir of emotion welled up inside him.

He stepped forward, crouched down, and grabbed her arm. "You’re useless," he said with disgust.

Claire Kendall used his strength to climb out. The moment her feet touched the ground, she feigned a panicked stumble, flailing her arms and planting them squarely on Ethan Lynch’s chest.

SPLASH—

Losing his balance, Ethan Lynch fell straight into the water, sending up a huge spray.

Laughter erupted from the onlookers.

Ethan Lynch’s head broke the surface, a pathetic, drenched sight. "Claire Kendall, you did that on purpose! You’re fucking asking for it!"

Claire Kendall stood on the edge of the pool, looking down at him.

"My apologies. My hand slipped. I hope you can forgive me, Mr. Lynch."

With that, she gathered her heavy, soaked skirt, straightened her back, and walked away from the pool area.

「In the changing room.」

Claire Kendall stood frozen, leaning against the wall, her body shivering uncontrollably from the cold. After a long moment, her ragged breathing finally began to even out.

She mechanically dried her hair with a towel, peeled off the soaked dress, and wrapped herself in a bath towel before rummaging for a change of clothes.

CREAK—

The door to the private room was thrown open.

Claire Kendall instinctively clutched the towel tighter and turned to see Miles Warren standing in the doorway.

He had taken off his suit jacket. The shirt underneath was the one she had personally designed and sewn for him, a sight that now seemed incredibly ironic.

A terrifying chill emanated from him. He stared at her, advancing step by step, his presence overwhelmingly oppressive.

Claire Kendall tensed up, backing away instinctively until her back hit a locker, leaving her with nowhere to retreat.

’He’s probably here to call me to account.’

’But for now, the only thing I can do is try to smooth things over.’

"Claire Kendall."

His voice was hoarse, laced with a suppressed emotion.

"What’s the meaning of this? Are you done reeling me in? Ready for catch and release now?"

Her voice was delicate and soft. "I’ve never thought of you as a fish, Dr. Warren."

"And even if you were, this heart of mine is a tank with room for only one..."

Sweet nothings like these came so easily to her.

But Miles Warren wasn’t buying it.

She could feel the anger radiating from him.

His usual cool composure had vanished without a trace.

"Claire Kendall, I’m asking you."

"What exactly is the relationship between you and Ethan Lynch?"

Claire Kendall looked at him, her lips parting slightly, but she couldn’t think of how to answer such a thorny question.

’My relationship with Ethan Lynch is tied to the Kendall Family’s ugly mess, and I don’t want to talk about it.’

’If Howard Kendall were to cause a scene at the hospital, it would destroy his career.’

Seeing her silence, the warmth in Miles Warren’s eyes slowly faded, replaced by ice.

He straightened up.

"Miles Warren, I..." Claire Kendall wracked her brain, trying to come up with a smooth excuse.

His voice was flat, devoid of any emotion. "Don’t bother. I get it."

"Shirley Kendall’s surgery is scheduled for next Monday. I’ll be performing it myself. The room and post-op recovery have all been arranged, and the fees have been paid."

Miles Warren turned to leave.

"Claire Kendall, we’re even now. This is where it ends."

"You’re just... disappointing."

The moment before he closed the door, he reached outside, brought in a bag, and set it down.

The room fell into a dead silence.

Claire Kendall walked over to it.

Inside the bag was a set of clean clothes.

She picked them up. The fabric was delicate, and they were in her size.

’Me? Disappointing?’

’If I’m so disappointing, why is he being so thoughtful even when we’re fighting?’

Claire Kendall’s head began to ache.

The dull ache in her chest spread, a fine, dense web of pain.

She changed into the clean clothes, left the club, and went straight to the Kendall Family residence.

Howard Kendall lazily lifted his eyelids. "Well? Did you secure the partnership?"

"No. It was the Orwell Family’s IPO celebration. Ethan Lynch didn’t discuss the partnership with me."

"Useless. Of course you have to be the one to bring up something so important."

Claire Kendall’s voice was flat. "Mom’s surgery is next Monday. You need to go to the hospital and sign the consent form."

Howard Kendall stubbed out his cigarette, annoyed. "What’s the rush? Isn’t that still a week away? Secure the deal with Lynch Building Materials within the week, and I won’t bother you again."

"Got it," Claire Kendall replied coldly.

"Dad, you can’t just sign the consent form. What if the hospital asks us for money? With her mom’s health, she probably won’t live long even with the surgery. Don’t let her waste money for nothing..."

SLAP!

The crisp sound of a slap cut off Chloe Kendall’s tirade.

She clutched her face, stomping her foot. "Claire Kendall, how dare you hit me! Dad, she hit me..."

Chloe Kendall rushed forward, crying and shouting, only to be shoved aside by Claire Kendall.

"Watch your mouth. You don’t need to worry about the surgery fees, and don’t you dare talk about my mother again."

"If anything happens to her, I’ll make sure none of you get to live in peace!"

Claire Kendall’s eyes were so fierce that for a moment, even Howard Kendall was intimidated.

She turned and left, heading back to Regency Gardens.

In the hallway, she stood at her door, frowning slightly as she looked at the door to apartment 501.

’I wonder if he’s back. Thinking of how angry he looked today, I feel an urge to just lay all my cards on the table.’

’He’s a tough one. It looks like I can’t stay here anymore. After Mom’s surgery is done, I’ll have to move again.’

’I originally thought being so close would give me an advantage.’

’But now, it seems that moon is beyond my reach.’

After a shower, Claire Kendall called Ethan Lynch.

The moment the call connected, an enraged voice roared through the phone.

"Claire Kendall, you have the nerve to call me? I haven’t even gotten back at you for what happened at the pool!"

She softened her voice. "Mr. Lynch, I’m sorry. I was too impulsive tonight. I’d like to apologize to you in person and also discuss the partnership between the Lynch and Kendall families."

There was a pause on the other end, followed by a derisive laugh. "Alright. I’ll give you credit for being sensible. Tomorrow, noon, at The Arbor."

"That dress you wore really showed off your figure. I liked it. Tomorrow, I’ll see just how sincere you really are..."
