Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Take Off the Underwear, or Not?
Claire lowered her gaze to the line of text on her screen, a smile touching her lips.
She replied quickly.
[Don’t do anything rash. What did she do to annoy you?]
[She touched me.]
Claire couldn’t help but laugh out loud. She could almost picture Miles right now, his face tight and his brow furrowed as he was forced to deal with Rosalind.
She tapped the screen.
[Wait for me. I’m on my way to the hospital to save you.]
She put down her phone and gave Ian an apologetic smile.
"I’m sorry, Ian. There’s an emergency at the hospital. I have to go."
Ian nodded, the light in his eyes dimming slightly. He forced a gentle smile. "Is it Dr. Warren?"
Claire nodded. "This meal is on me!"
"Claire!" Ian suddenly stood up and called out to her.
The warm yellow light made his gaze seem even more tender. His casual tone vanished, replaced by a sense of gravity.
"Claire, there’s actually something I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time."
He paused, his voice clear and firm. "I like you. I’ve liked you since the first time I saw you in college, since you brought me to work with you at OCHH."
The sudden confession took Claire by surprise.
She looked into Ian’s sincere eyes, a complex emotion flashing through her. ’Ian is a great guy—cheerful, gentle, and we have a lot in common, but...’
"Ian, I’m sorry. I’m already pursuing someone."
Claire was straightforward and frank, not hiding anything.
Ian’s body tensed slightly. "Is it Miles Warren?"
She nodded.
His smile was bitter as he asked softly, "Claire, do you really like him that much?"
Claire paused.
’That was a question she’d never considered.’
’From the very beginning, she had approached Miles Warren with a purpose. Pursuing him, winning him over... it had simply become her set goal.’
She didn’t answer Ian directly. Her voice was even softer, but firm. "I’m pursuing him."
"Ian, you’ll find your true love." Claire turned and left the private room.
「Aethel General Hospital, Third Floor Office.」
Rosalind Linden, a carefully practiced smile on her face, was holding a cup of coffee and about to go inside.
Claire strode forward, blocking the space between her and the door.
Rosalind’s hand trembled. Seeing Claire, a look of shock and anger flashed across her face.
"What are you doing here?"
"Dr. Warren is my mother’s attending physician. It’s perfectly reasonable for me to be here."
Claire snatched the coffee from her hand, stuck the straw in, took a sip, and said with a grin, "Thanks, Dr. Linden~"
"You..." Rosalind was so angry her hand was shaking. "Claire Kendall, have you no shame?"
"Can’t get free coffee if I’m worried about shame," she said with a wink.
Just as Rosalind was about to explode, the door was pulled open from the inside.
Miles Warren’s voice was cold. "Claire Kendall, come in. We need to discuss your mother’s surgery."
"Dr. Linden, I have work to do."
"Miles, I..."
Before Rosalind could finish, Miles had already pulled Claire inside, using a perfectly valid excuse.
SLAM!
The door was shut tight.
Claire sat down opposite his desk as if she’d done it a hundred times.
The man looked up at her, his voice so cold it betrayed no emotion. "You got back quickly."
Claire bit lightly on the coffee straw and blinked. "Dr. Warren was being harassed. How could I not hurry back?"
"If I hadn’t come back, someone might have called the police, and then I’d miss the show, wouldn’t I?"
’Her little schemes... heh...’
Miles ignored her jab. "Have a good time with that junior of yours?"
Claire raised an eyebrow. "I did. It wasn’t just good—he confessed his feelings for me."
The line of Miles’s jaw tightened. His fingers, holding a pen, clenched involuntarily, and his eyes darkened.
’And with that reaction, he still has the nerve to say he doesn’t like her and doesn’t want to be with her.’
’What is this guy so tied up in knots about?’
"Of course, I turned him down." Claire stopped teasing him. She leaned forward across the desk, her pale, slender finger poking his chest as she spoke, word by word.
"After all, in my heart, there’s only room for Dr. Warren."
"Such a smooth talker." Miles brushed her finger away.
The man’s gaze fell on her neck.
His brow furrowed slightly. He stood up, pushed aside the loose strands of hair at her neck, and looked more closely.
There were rows of small red bumps with smooth edges, freshly formed.
"What’s wrong with your neck?"
"Hmm?" Claire looked at his serious expression, slightly taken aback.
Now that he mentioned it, her neck did feel a little itchy.
"Maybe something bit me."
As Claire spoke, she raised a hand to touch it a few times. It did seem like there were little bumps.
"Don’t move." Miles grabbed her wrist. The grip wasn’t heavy, but it was firm and left no room for resistance.
He walked around to the front of the desk and carefully observed the red spots.
"Did you eat anything unusual tonight?"
The man was so close that his breath warmed the sensitive tip of her ear.
Claire’s heart began to beat a little faster.
"Nothing unusual, just some raw marinated shrimp and drunken crab," she answered honestly, subconsciously raising a hand to scratch her neck. "It really is a bit itchy..."
She scratched harder, but the more she scratched, the itchier it got, now with a hint of stinging pain.
"Stop scratching." Miles’s large hand covered hers, his expression turning serious. "You’re having an allergic reaction."
He put on a pair of disposable examination gloves, his movements professional and efficient.
"Sit still. Don’t move. I need to check other areas."
He undid the top two buttons of her blouse and gently pulled the fabric down a bit. Sure enough, the rash had spread to her collarbone.
Claire looked up, her eyes meeting the man’s Adam’s apple before sliding down to his hands.
The medical-grade rubber gloves encased his long, slender fingers.
"Dr. Warren, seeing you handle me with those gloves on... it’s a little too ascetic~"
"Claire Kendall..." Miles’s tone was a mix of anger and helplessness. Ignoring her, he took a tube of ointment from a cabinet. "Lie down on the bed."
She immediately got up from the chair and obediently lay down.
She tilted her head back, unbuttoning her blouse, her eyes bright and clear.
"Dr. Warren, should I take off my bra?"
Miles’s eyes lowered slightly, his pupils filled with a sense of resignation.
He immediately pulled her shirt closed, squeezed out some ointment, and gently spread it over her neck with his gloved fingertip.
The ointment felt cool against her skin, but Claire was still itchy.
She let out an involuntary whimper, her voice tinged with a coquettish tone.
"Miles Warren, be gentle, it’s itchy..."
The man’s movements paused for a second. He didn’t reply, but the pressure from his fingertip softened slightly. "So dramatic."
"I’m not being dramatic, Dr. Warren was just being too rough."
"Claire Kendall," Miles interrupted her, his gaze darkening with a hint of warning. "You talk too much."
"But I’m itchy! It’s uncomfortable. Talking to you helps distract me."
She stuck her neck out, speaking defiantly, and squirmed restlessly.
"My back is itchy, my waist is itchy... and I think it’s itchy down there, too..."
