Chapter 72: Chapter 72: We Can Continue After a Shower?
The highway to Viridell County was backed up for miles. As it neared the Mount Viridell exit, traffic came to a complete standstill.
Traffic police were up ahead, stopping oncoming vehicles.
"There’s been a landslide ahead, causing a multi-car pile-up. The situation is serious. All vehicles must detour!"
’A car crash?’
An image Miles Warren had suppressed for over a decade surfaced uncontrollably in his mind.
A car, almost smashed to pieces, and the mother who had abandoned him.
The possibility of losing Claire Kendall for good was like a massive black net, trapping him completely.
Miles Warren threw open his car door and dashed into the rain.
"I’m not in a car. I can walk from here!"
The traffic officer hurried to stop him. "Calm down! The area ahead is sealed off. You’re not driving, so how are you going to find anyone on foot?"
Miles Warren’s eyes were starkly calm. "She’s someone very important. I have to find her. Please, step aside."
The officer was taken aback by his forceful presence, freezing for several seconds before reacting.
"No one gets through! Those are orders from my superiors!"
For the first time in his life, Miles lost his composure like this. He was about to force his way past the blockade.
Just as the standoff reached a stalemate.
"Miles Warren?"
A trembling, incredulous voice called out from behind him.
Miles Warren shuddered and snapped his head up.
Claire Kendall was soaked to the bone and spattered with mud. Her long hair was plastered in a tangled mess to her cheeks, and her clothes were torn, revealing skin streaked with blood underneath.
She was looking at him, her eyes brimming with astonishment and a sense of grievance.
Time seemed to freeze for a few seconds.
Then, the man who was always so calm and composed broke into a run, rushing toward her.
Before Claire Kendall could fully process what was happening, the man yanked her fiercely into his arms.
Miles Warren’s arms wrapped tightly around her slender waist, his grip so strong it felt like he might crush her.
Her umbrella slipped from her grasp and fell into a puddle of mud. The rain soaked them both, but his body was so searingly hot that Claire couldn’t feel the slightest bit of cold.
"You’re okay..." His voice was hoarse.
She sniffled, her voice low and choked with the emotion of having survived a close call.
"There was a landslide. The car hit the guardrail, but it was just on the edge. The car’s wrecked, but I’m fine."
The two of them were unable to leave. After coordinating with the traffic police, they left the Mount Viridell highway exit and returned to the small inn at the foot of the mountain.
"Well, young lady, you’re back. Like I said, nobody’s getting out in this weather, and nobody’s getting in either..."
His words trailed off, stopping abruptly.
He saw that Claire Kendall was being followed by a man who was also drenched to the bone.
"Someone actually dared to come in during this weather? You two really have a death wish."
Miles Warren said in a low voice, "Sir, a room, please."
Because of the constant rain, the wooden floor of the second-floor room was a bit damp, creaking with every step.
The moment the door closed, Miles began, "I’ll go downstairs and borrow a first-aid kit..."
His words were cut short as Claire clumsily sealed his lips with her own.
Miles Warren’s back went rigid. His hands, hanging at his sides, slowly clenched into fists.
As she tried to explore further, he turned his head away and pushed her back.
In the dim light, Claire’s lips were a faint pink, and her eyes were red.
Her gaze held a hint of disappointment, mixed with a touch of indignation.
Miles’s voice was low and raspy. "You’re injured. Your wounds need to be treated."
Claire stared at him, watching his tense jawline and the restrained bob of his Adam’s apple.
She said nothing, boldly wrapping herself around him again, her hands gripping the sides of his shirt at his waist.
"Claire Kendall," his voice grew heavier, laced with a hoarse warning, "do you know what you’re doing?"
"I know."
Her voice was muffled, tinged with a stubborn, nasal tone.
"I know exactly what I’m doing."
"Today, when the mudslide came crashing down, I thought I’d never see you again."
"When I was about to die, I only had one thought—"
She looked up, the emotion in her eyes turbulent and direct.
"I haven’t slept with you yet. I can’t die."
"Miles Warren," her voice was insistent, "so why did you suddenly come here?"
"I..." Miles’s body tensed even further.
His nostrils filled with the faint scent of blood on her, mixed with the murky smell of rain.
It was a reminder that the person before him had just been in a car crash. He had come so, so close to losing her again.
Everything was silently crumbling his defenses.
He couldn’t bear even the slightest possibility of losing her.
He didn’t answer, merely tightening his grip on her shoulders.
"Even if you don’t say it, I know."
Claire’s voice was full of certainty. She stood on her toes again, this time placing a kiss on his tense jaw before it slowly trailed to his Adam’s apple.
The moment was intimate, her words indistinct.
"You were scared, weren’t you?"
His innermost thoughts exposed, Miles’s large hand suddenly moved to her back, forcefully pulling her against him.
Claire, with nowhere to retreat, was pressed tightly against him as she tilted her head back to look up at him.
He practically ground out each word through clenched teeth, forcing them from deep within his chest.
"Claire Kendall, don’t tempt me."
"Then I’m going to do just that—"
She drew the words out in a soft, long drawl, the slight tremor at the end sending a shiver through Miles’s entire body.
Impulse finally snapped the string of his self-control.
He pressed down on her, conquering the space between her lips and teeth, forcing her to sink into abandon with him.
’Is this what they call an old house catching fire—that feeling of losing all control?’ Claire thought, dizzy from the kiss.
She really couldn’t take much more of it.
Just as she was about to run out of breath, the man reluctantly released her.
"Miles Warren, you..." Her voice was incredibly soft and breathy.
He had clearly been pressing against her, yet he still stopped before taking the next step. ’This man has really mastered the art of self-restraint.’
"Your wounds need to be treated. Go take a shower first."
His breathing was deep and heavy.
"Hm?" Claire seemed to have keenly picked up on something crucial.
"So, Dr. Warren~ does that mean we can continue after I’m done showering?"
