Chapter 93: Chapter 93: Willing to Fall
Yvonne Warren watched Claire Kendall’s face drain of color and continued viciously.
"Ms. Kendall, it can’t have been that long since you and Jacob Sinclair broke up. To be able to hook a catch like my uncle—a man others can only dream of—so quickly... you’re really something else."
Victor Warren feigned a look of fury, slamming his teacup down on the table with a loud CRACK. Tea splashed everywhere.
He interrogated Jacob Sinclair, "Were you and Claire Kendall really boyfriend and girlfriend before?"
Jacob Sinclair’s expression remained unchanged; he even nodded with a certain degree of composure.
His voice was piercingly clear as he admitted it frankly, "Yes. Claire and I were together since college. We broke up because of some misunderstandings."
He paused, his gaze passing over the crowd to land directly on Miles Warren.
"Claire has a bit of a temper. When she gets provoked, she’s liable to do something foolish. Mr. Warren, I hope you won’t hold it against her."
Yvonne Warren grabbed a glass of wine and hurled its contents straight at Claire Kendall.
"Jacob Sinclair! Even now, you’re still protecting this promiscuous bitch!"
Jacob Sinclair raised his voice. "Yvonne, don’t go too far! Our engagement was just a formality, and it’s already been called off."
A large patch on the chest of Claire Kendall’s blouse was soaked with red wine, which dripped down, leaving her in a pathetic state.
Murmurs erupted from the guest tables.
"This woman is two-timing them. How despicable!"
"She must be too in love with Jacob Sinclair. She was upset he got engaged to Yvonne Warren, so she deliberately seduced Miles Warren just to make a scene."
"The niece’s fiancé and the uncle’s girlfriend used to be a couple? The Warren Family has really lost a lot of face this time."
"If that’s the case, the Warrens’ young master has it pretty rough, being played like that."
...
Claire Kendall stood frozen in place, the tips of her fingers turning cold.
She knew the truth would come out eventually, but she never imagined it would be exposed in a place like this, turning Miles Warren into a public laughingstock.
With the fabric on her chest soaked through, her figure was faintly visible under the watchful eyes of the crowd. She felt utterly mortified.
"Are you all done?"
Miles Warren’s voice, devoid of any warmth, rang out, and the banquet hall instantly fell silent.
He rose to his feet, and all eyes converged on him.
A smug smile touched Yvonne Warren’s lips. ’Miles is going to humiliate her, crush her, make it so she can never show her face in Aethel again. Claire Kendall, you’re finally finished.’
Miles Warren stood tall and straight, stopping in front of Claire Kendall.
She lowered her gaze, not daring to meet his eyes, like a prisoner awaiting their sentence. ’He must be absolutely disgusted with me, completely repulsed.’
He looked at her soaked blouse, his eyes darkening, but said nothing.
The next second, a jacket carrying his scent was draped over her shoulders. He carefully pulled it snug, wrapping her up and concealing the awkwardness on her chest.
Claire Kendall froze for a moment, then finally raised her head to look at him.
His face was blank, but his eyes churned with an indecipherable storm of emotions.
He picked a bottle of red wine from a waiter’s tray and, holding it casually, walked over to Yvonne Warren.
When Yvonne Warren saw his sinister eyes, she trembled and instinctively took a step back.
He raised the bottle, held it over her head, and simply started pouring.
Yvonne Warren was completely stunned, standing frozen to the spot, forgetting to dodge.
The dark red liquid gurgled out, running down her hair and drenching her completely, like a drowned rat.
Yvonne Warren let out a piercing shriek.
The entire room was dead silent. No one dared to make a sound.
Victor Warren shot to his feet. "Miles Warren, have you lost your mind!"
Miles Warren looked down at the pathetic figure of Yvonne Warren.
"Why is Claire Kendall here today? And when exactly did you find out she was Jacob Sinclair’s ex-girlfriend?"
His voice was quiet, each word spoken with deliberate emphasis.
"Do I need to investigate? My dear niece."
He bit down on the last words, and Yvonne Warren trembled under his stare, not daring to argue.
Victor Warren exploded in a furious rebuke. "Miles Warren, you’re out here getting involved with this kind of promiscuous woman, shaming the entire Warren family! And you have the audacity to question your niece!"
Miles Warren let go, and the wine bottle rolled to his feet with a CLANG.
"Who I befriend and who I date, big brother, is not for you to comment on."
"As long as Claire Kendall is with me, Yvonne is to address her as her aunt. She threw wine on an elder; that is what truly brings shame to the Warren family’s name. Me returning a bottle to her was merely a small punishment to teach a larger lesson."
Those two casual sentences left Victor Warren speechless. He turned to Louis Warren, his tone anxious.
"Dad! In a situation like this, you can’t just let Miles act so recklessly! Someone like Claire Kendall absolutely cannot be allowed to enter the Warren family’s gates..."
"That’s enough," Louis Warren interrupted his eldest son.
He wanted to defend Miles Warren, but after glancing at Claire Kendall, he found the tangled relationships made it impossible to know where to even begin. He could only let out a heavy sigh.
Miles Warren coldly raised his eyes and looked at the guests present.
He slowly and deliberately curled his lips into a smile.
"Regarding what just happened, I’ll allow all of you to discuss it, but only for today, and only within The Sovereign Hotel."
"But after today, once you leave this hotel, if I hear even a single word from any of you about Claire Kendall or about Moonstone, I don’t care which company’s shareholder or director you are—I, Miles Warren, will personally see to it that you are held accountable."
The entire hall fell silent as a tomb.
No one was willing to offend the future heir of the Warren family over a bit of gossip.
The guests, whose eyes had just been filled with mockery and sarcasm, now actively avoided looking at Claire Kendall.
This crown prince of the Warren family was either a love-struck fool or a complete madman.
He chuckled softly and nodded.
"Well then, this is as far as we’ll be participating in today’s anniversary celebration. Please, everyone, carry on."
With that, he took Claire Kendall’s hand and led her out of the banquet hall.
Miles Warren gripped her wrist tightly, his hold so strong it left a red mark.
Claire Kendall was dragged along, stumbling to keep up behind him.
She half-jogged, sneaking glances up at him.
The man’s jaw was clenched, his thin lips pressed into a firm line. He didn’t spare her a single glance.
"Miles..." she began softly, but he didn’t respond. He pulled open the car door, shielded her head with one hand, and pushed her into the passenger seat with the other.
He leaned in, his imposing presence filling the small space as he fastened the seatbelt for her.
Without a word, Miles Warren shut her door, walked around to the other side, got into the driver’s seat, and stomped on the gas.
The tires screeched over a speed bump as the car shot into the flow of traffic.
Miles Warren gripped the steering wheel, staring straight ahead. He looked no different than usual, yet his presence made Claire Kendall so nervous she was afraid to even breathe.
She asked quietly, "Where... are we going?"
The car noticeably sped up.
In all the time she had known him, Claire Kendall had seen Miles Warren be cold, lose control, and fly into a rage, but she had never seen him like this.
He didn’t shout, curse, or question her. He was like a dormant volcano on the verge of eruption, ready to swallow her whole at any moment.
She bit her lip. "About Jacob Sinclair... I can explain—"
The car suddenly accelerated, the tires letting out a sharp screech against the pavement.
She didn’t continue.
The city lights were left far behind as the car sped toward the coast.
Finally, he pulled to a stop at the entrance to a deserted beach and cut the engine.
Claire Kendall unbuckled her seatbelt, the sound of distant waves crashing against rocks reaching her ears.
After a long moment, the man finally released his grip on the steering wheel.
Miles Warren finally looked at her.
The sea breeze poured in through the window, blowing his bangs off his forehead. His ink-black eyes were now even darker, more turbulent.
"Your ex-boyfriend of six years from college was Jacob Sinclair."
Claire Kendall was silent. She nodded.
"So your reason for getting close to me now isn’t just about the kidney transplant for your mother."
"It’s because I’m Yvonne Warren’s uncle. You did it for him, didn’t you?"
Claire Kendall’s heart trembled.
She opened her mouth but no sound came out. With great difficulty, she nodded.
’This game of seduction... from the very beginning, my intentions were impure, my motives sordid.’
Seeing her slow nod, Miles Warren’s composure finally shattered.
He had known from the start that she had ulterior motives, but he had been willing to be used, willing to fall for her.
But he could not accept that the one she loved was another man.
