Location: Wyrmwood Academy..
Reynold was already inside his room. His backpack was on the bed. He unzipped it open and reached inside the bag.
The old map came out. It was still folded. He turned it over as he stare at before before he set it aside on the bed.
His hand went back inside the bag and came out with a small journal. The cover was thick brown leather. He took it from his father’s study in the old Starweaver mansion.
Reynold opened the first page again.
Almost every word was written in Valdris Old language. The only clear English words were the date: May 25.
He stared at the strange symbols for a long moment, then sighed as he closed the journal and dropped it on the bed next to the map.
His hand dipped into the backpack again. This time he pulled out a small glass jar filled with ripe strawberries. The fruit was Gwyn’s favorite. He had brought them for her.
Reynold set the jar carefully on the floor under the bed. Then he bent down and dragged out a wooden box that was under the bed. He opened the lid and placed the map and the journal inside, and then he reached back into the side pocket of the backpack. He pulled out the letter and put it in the box with the rest.
He closed the lid and locked it back. He ran his hand on the box as he muttered a short sealing spell. Soft blue light flickered around the box for a second, then vanished. He pushed the box back under the bed until it was completely out of sight.
Reynold stood up, pulled off the shirt he was still wearing, and changed into a clean academy shirt. He grabbed the jar of strawberries and left the room.
He was going to find Gwyn.
Funny thing was, he still did not know her exact dorm room. What kind of friend was he?
He walked straight toward the magic-user quarters.
The building looked clean and neat, just like the rest of the academy’s magic side. Only a few cadets were outside. Most of them turn when they saw him. Their eyes followed him for a moment before they kept walking.
Reynold kept moving. After a while he suddenly stopped . He really had no idea which building was which.
He sighed and looked around. A female lecturer was nearby, maybe she was in her late twenties. She wore the black robes of a magic instructor.
"Excuse me, Ms," Reynold said. "i am looking for Year One female dorm."
The lecturer did not answer immediately. Her eyes moved slowly Reynold from head to toe.
Reynold swallowed and lifted the jar a little higher. "I’m Reynold Starweaver. I’m just dropping off something for a friend."
Her expression softened. "Ah. Reynold. Take the left path. The first building you see is the Year One dorm."
He nodded. "Thank you."
When he reached the building the place was empty. No cadet was outside.
Reynold stood there for a moment. He still did not know which room belonged to Gwyn. Then he spotted another lecturer walking past and hurried over to him.
"I’m looking for Gwyn... Gwyn Kaidaron.. She is a first year," he said.
The man glanced at him. "All the first-years are still in lecture. They should be back soon."
Reynold nodded. "Thank you.."
He turned and saw a low stone bench near the entrance. He walked there and sat down. He put the jar on his lap, and started tapping his fingers against his knee and small currents of air started to gather around his hand. The wind twisted and spun like a tiny tornado, lifting a few dry leaves from the ground.
Minutes passed before groups of cadets started to appear, walking toward the building and talking among themselves.
Most of them stopped when they noticed Reynold sitting there. Their faces was filled with shock. Reynold Starweaver never came to the magic-user side.
Reynold stopped moving his fingers and little wind died immediately. He kept his eyes on the entrance.
Then he turned his head when he heard a familiar voice.
Gwyn was walking with Nyx. Nyx had one arm wrapped loosely around Gwyn’s waist, and Gwyn was laughing at whatever Nyx had just said.
Reynold’s gaze dropped to Gwyn’s other arm. It was wrapped in a plaster cast.
Did she break her hand?
Then his eyes shifted to the girl walking on Gwyn’s other side.
Blond hair. Familiar face.
Reynold frowned.
What was she doing in the magic-user quarters?
...
Location: Aether Kingdom. The Dungeons.
Inside an iron cell, two assassins was chained with thick chains. Half their faces were burned black. The face looked melted.
Two guards pulled glowing iron rods a small fire pit filled with hot coals. They pressed the red-hot metal against the assassins’ backs.
The men screamed.
"Who sent you?" one guard asked.
"I ain’t talking," the assassin spat through gritted teeth. "Fu*k you."
Queen Hadassah was outside the dungeon door with her arms folded. She was watching through the bars.
"Open it," she said.
The guard at the door pulled it open, and Hadassah stepped inside.
She walked past the guards, took the iron rod from the one holding it, and turned it slowly in her hand.
"You have one more chance," she said. "Tell me who hired you, and I will set you free. Stay quiet, and we keep going until there’s nothing left of you."
The second assassin, lifted his head. Sweat and blood ran down the side of his ruined face. "Fu*k you"
Hadassah let out a low scoffed. Then she pressed the glowing tip straight between the assassin’s legs. The man scream. His whole body jerked against the chains.
Hadassah stepped more closer, the iron rod still close between his legs that the heat radiated off it and the man shifted back against his chains.
"Elder Corvan Dresh," he blurted out. "It was Elder Corvan Dresh! He’s the one who paid us .."
The first assassin’s head snapped toward him. "Shut your mouth, you coward.."
"She fu*king put the rod between my leg. And i don’t want to die down here!" the second one shouted back. "Corvan Dresh paid us and gave us the palace layout!"
Hadassah’s eyes stayed fixed on him for a long moment. Then she lowered the iron rod, handing it back to the guard without a word.
"Corvan Dresh," she repeated quietly, almost to herself.
She turned and walked out of the cell.
