The Almighty Dragon Rider Returns

Chapter 80: Did You Kill Someone?

Reynold stared at Laena frowning face for a second. He turned and walk away without any word.

Just as he took the first step, her voice sounded from behind him.

"You want to know how Gwyn broke her arm?"

Reynold stopped walking.

"She was defending you," Laena said. "One of the Noble-High students went after her because she was trying to defend you. They beat her until her arm was broken. That is how she ended up in a cast."

Laena paused as her voice dropped lower.

"If you were smart, Reynold, you’d stay the fu*k away from her."

Reynold did not turn around or say anything. He just kept walking.

He left the magic-user building and walked toward the rider side.

Murmurs were flying around. Cadets were walking in pairs and small groups. Most of them were talking about the same thing.

The words reached Reynold’s ear.

"I heard the list for the tournament will soon be out," one muttered, shaking his head.

"Yeah... It’s annoying they are changing this year’s Quadrant tournament to include all level."

"You think Noble-High is winning it again?"

"They might. You see how their year-one cadets were bossing our year one top cadets around when they came for research? Even Gwyn ended up with a broken arm. I’m betting on them to win it all..."

"Christine, loan me some coins. I want to bet. I’ll pay you back after the tournament."

Reynold’s jaw tightened when he heard Gwyn name, but before he continue walking, a familiar face caught his eye.

He hurried after her.

"Nymeria!"

Reynold reached out and lightly touched her shoulder.

Nymeria stopped walking. She turned her head and her eyes dropped to Reynold’s hand.

Reynold pulled his hand back at once seeing the look. He swallowed.

"Umm..." he rubbed the back of his neck as he let out a weak, lopsided smile. "I didn’t mean to disturb or trouble you. But... I really need a favor."

Nymeria crossed her arms. Her face cold.

"Did you kill someone, Starweaver?"

"What? No." Reynold shook his head. "I just need you to help get my name on the list for the tournament in the year-one category. I heard they’re changing the rules this year to open it up across all levels."

Nymeria’s expression did not change.

"How sure are you that I can help get your name on that list?"

"Because you’re the student president," Reynold said. "Your voice carries weight. And I know you can pull it off because you’re Nymeria Xylaria."

She let out a short breath with her arms still folded.

"Let’s say I can. But why should I?"

"I need it," Reynold said. "It will boost my rank. And I am not trying to sound full of myself, but I’m the strongest cadet in Year One. I’m already better than most of Year Two and maybe even some of Year Three."

Nymeria chuckled as she took one step closer. Her eyes on Reynold’s face.

"What’s in it for me?"

Reynold blinked. "What?" He muttered as he quickly stepped back.

Nymeria’s voice was still calm.

"What’s in it for me? This academy is a game. You want something, you give something . Nothing is really free herr."

Reynold scratched the back of his neck.

"I... I don’t know. You already seem to have everything you need."

Nymeria chuckled again and turned away. She started walking without turning back.

Reynold’s voice came out before he could stop it.

"I could read you a bedtime story for a week."

Nymeria stopped walking. She did not turn around.

She bit her lower lip as a small smile showed on her mouth. Then she kept walking.

Reynold slapped his own forehead.

"Really? Bedtime stories? That’s the best you could think of?"

He stood there for a moment, sighed, and headed back toward his dorm.

....

Location: The Inn – Top Floor Private Chamber

Professor Valerius was on the bed.

Sabel dipped a clean cloth into a bowl of water and carefully wiped the cut across his side where the knife had sliced him.

He winced.

After she cleaned the wound, Sabel flicked her fingers and a soft light glowed. The cut closed at once.

She rubbed the spot gently with her thumb, then let out a slow breath.

"Do you mind telling me how you got beaten up like this?"

Valerius swallowed.

"I can’t give you every detail. But.... I went to see my mother and It didn’t end well."

Sabel’s voice turned soft.

"You really went to see your mother?"

He nodded. "Yes."

She shook her head.

"You should have known better than to pick a fight with her. She is one of the strongest channelers of our time. She can draw power from almost anywhere and you still went after her."

Valerius took her hands.

"Relax. I’m fine."

He pulled her forward and she landed lightly against his chest.

"Thank you for taking care of me," he said quietly.

They stared at each other for a moment.

Then Sabel’s eyes dropped to his lips as she leaned in and kissed him.

.....

Location: Aether Kingdom – The Dungeon

Guards dragged Elder Corvan Dresh inside the dungeon as they used the thick channel-chains to wrapped his wrists and ankles.

He screamed and cursed at the guards.

"You cunts better release me! Do you know who I am? Let me go!"

After the assassins confessed, Queen Hadassah had ordered the guards to bring him in. He tried to run but they caught him anyway.

Hadassah was outside the cell with her arms folded. She said nothing.

Corvan’s head snapped toward her.

"Tell your dogs to stand down! If you think this is over, you’re wrong. They will send more until you’re dead!"

The chains clinked as the guards locked him in place.

Hadassah unfolded her arms and stepped into the cell.

She walked straight to him, grabbed his face, and forced him to look at her.

Her voice was very cold.

"You seem to have forgotten who holds the real power here, Corvan. You and your men are nothing compared to me. When I’m finished with you, you will wish and pray for death to come sooner."

She shoved him outside and he fell backward.

Hadassah turned and walked out without another word.
