Serena could feel it through their matebond. The emotions flooding from Fin’s chest into hers were so layered and so compressed that separating them was trying to untangle a knot made of wire.
Anger. Hurt. Betrayal. Grief. Jealousy. Something that might have been guilt and something that might have been recognition and something underneath all of it that was old enough to predate language and had been sitting in Finnick Shadowclaw’s chest long before he had the name to give it.
She tried to push calm into him through their matebond. A deliberate, steady pulse of reassurance, the way he had done for her a hundred times. In the bath. On the floor. In every moment where her world was falling apart and his calm was the only thing holding the pieces together.
Mistake.
The calm did not take.
Anger flooded back through the matebond so fast it hit her sternum like a fist. She wasn’t sure if the anger was solely at her or at the situation.
At a system that handed three Alphas the same woman and was essentially telling them to sort it out without a manual.
Serena stared at the fire. She did not try again. The trying would make it worse. Fin’s anger was the kind that needed to burn through its fuel and reach its own end, and her interference was not fuel but it wasn’t water either, and the best thing she could do right now was stand inside his arm and let the matebond carry whatever it carried without her editing the transmission.
The flame brightened.
"And what else do we have here."
The tone flipped from roast mode to full-on genuflecting, like someone hit the emergency freeze button.
"Incarnate of the First Dragon Queen. Incarnate of the First Queen of Wolves. Fallen from slave to queen in every life. Adopted daughter of the first King of Fae in her first. Adopted by the Last Moonveil King in her second. Adopted by two kings in her third, the Frostborne King and now the Wise King."
All of Fin’s emotions became muffled to Serena because at the moment, she was having her own crisis. The word ’adopted’ hit her like a wall of ice water.
Not Tiberon. She was touched about that.
But the Frostborne King. Her father. The man who held her when she was small, who named her his heir, who stood between her and Orosia and refused to move. Twelve years of bedtime stories and morning training and the quiet, steady presence of a man she believed she came from.
She thought she was the product of chosen love. A mother and father who picked each other and made her on purpose. That was the foundation. That was the floor she had built every version of herself on top of.
The floor was gone.
Her pink magic flared, reacting to her emotions. She hadn’t noticed her eyes and skin glowing pink or the distress signal it was sending out like a beacon.
Gavriel’s green magic answered immediately on its own like it had been programmed to do this in another life and didn’t need Gavriel’s input.
Them lighting up was like chucking a lit match into the open gas can that was Finnick Shadowclaw’s soul, and the anger detonated through their matebond like an atomic bomb fucking the apocalypse sideways.
The green wrapped around the pink and held it, forming a barrier between them that Fin could absolutely feel and the wolf behind his ribs stopped snarling and started roaring. Serena gasped.
Tiberon stared into the flame with the focused dedication of a man who had just developed a sudden and convenient case of blindness in every direction that wasn’t forward.
The glow climbed, pushing the gold and green aside, the silver asserting itself with a quiet dominance that was less forceful and more fundamental, the way moonlight doesn’t compete with firelight but renders it secondary.
The voices darkened.
"Moon Princess. Daughter of the Moon Goddess. Carved in her image. The sole living white wolf and gold blood. You are alive."
They paused.
"A surprise."
That understatement was vast enough to fit an elephant, a giraffe, and the awkward silence after the giraffe asked the elephant about its weight.
"Ah yes. We see now why. We see all."
The fire turned emerald for one full second. Then returned to gold.
"The white wolf saved the Gamma’s life."
Tiberon’s eyes bounced to Serena, registered the pink-and-green disaster and Shadowclaw’s molten wolf-gold death glare, then retreated to the fire like he didn’t have time for that shit.
The when and the how were questions he planned to ask somewhere with fewer sacred flames and actual goddamn chairs.
"She pulled the Gamma back from death thrice, but he is only aware of a single time. The ancestors would like to shed light for the Gamma. Once months ago, she fed him her blood after the Gamma was hit with Dark Fae magic. A second time a week ago, after he broke his fated tie and his heart stopped, she marked him, pulling him back. And a third time, after a vampire bite that would have damned his soul for eternity. She marked him again. Three times this Gamma has cheated death because of the white wolf."
Tiberon heard it. That answered that.
The sentence dropped into the chamber like a blade into water, cutting clean and sinking fast. Every person in the room understood the mathematics.
The Gamma had been bitten. Vampire bites damned the soul. The soul was damned unless something intervened, and the something that intervened was a white wolf whose venom carried properties that predated every healer’s understanding of venom.
Gavriel, who had been pale as a ghost, regained color that had nothing to do with his green magic. His expression very clearly said ’thank fuck.’ Her wolf had marked him to save his soul and somehow that saved him from the vampire bite. He didn’t need to understand the science to take the win.
Then his eyes landed on Serena, whose face was the color of a pomegranate and whose gaze was pinned to the fire with the desperate commitment of a woman who had just been outed and didn’t know how to feel about any of it and would rather the volcano swallow than be here right now.
"Very well. White Wolf."
The runes dimmed. Every source of light in the chamber bent toward Serena, the constellations on the ceiling angling their glow, the fire in the basin tilting its heat, the Old Fae script redirecting its luminance until she was standing in a convergence of every light source in the room and the convergence was a spotlight she had not requested and could not refuse.
"You have now experienced firsthand what becomes of one who is bitten. You failed in your second life because you did not know. You did not fail in your third."
