The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate

Chapter 599: Before Serena, There Was Natalia

"M-missing?"

"Yes. Ronan came looking for you."

"Ronan?"

"Yes."

He did not elaborate. The silence after the confirmation had the energy of a door being closed on a room she wasn’t invited into yet.

She swallowed. The gold magic was still working through her ribs, knitting things she’d torn open in Viremont, and the warmth of it made it hard to think clearly, but guilt was cutting through regardless.

"I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause you to worry," she managed.

Dexmon’s arms tightened around her. She felt him inhale against her hair, deep and slow, the way someone breathes in a scent they’ve been missing for longer than a single lifetime.

"Natalia was my name in a past life. Wasn’t it?" Serena asked.

She didn’t know how she knew. The knowledge was just there, sitting in her chest like a coin she’d found in a pocket she didn’t remember filling. She wanted him to say it. Needed the confirmation from a voice that had no reason to lie.

"Yes."

The word was simple. The weight of it was not.

Serena swallowed and leaned back into him, just a fraction, just enough to let his chest take some of the weight her spine had been carrying alone. His magic was still flowing, golden and steady, threading through Charlie’s failing body like stitches in a wound.

"You were upset. You still are. Why?"

The directness almost took her aback. No preamble. No easing into it. He asked the way someone asks who has been alive long enough to find small talk insulting.

But the truth was immediate. "This man saved my life and I can feel his heart stuttering."

"He won’t die. I am holding him until your healers see him."

"Thank you," she said. She could feel his magic doing exactly that, could feel the golden current wrapped around Charlie’s pulse like a hand keeping a door from closing. But hearing him say it loosened something in her chest that feeling it hadn’t.

"But that’s not what I was asking, Natalia."

The name again. Every time he said it, something in her recognized it the way a key recognizes a lock.

"You take Velkaris and fly when you are upset. And you were upset enough that Velkaris took you on a trip for the entire night. What happened?"

Serena blinked. Then blinked again.

This was new.

Usually the dragon king surfaced like a whale breaching, a flash of ancient presence behind Dexmon’s eyes, a sentence or two, sometimes a kiss pressed to her forehead with the tenderness of someone visiting a grave, and then gone. Quick. Ceremonial. She was usually too possessed by the moment to do anything but stand there and feel the enormity of it.

This was a conversation. He was still here. He was asking follow-up questions. He was settling in like a man who had cleared his schedule and had no intention of leaving until he got an answer.

She opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

She took a steadying breath. The kind that was supposed to organize thoughts but only managed to keep them from collapsing.

"I am about to upset Dexmon and I don’t want to."

She let go of Charlie long enough to wipe her eyes with the back of her hand. The left one came away red. The right one came away wet.

That was the simplified version. The version with the edges sanded down and the ugly parts tucked behind a sentence clean enough to say out loud at sunrise without her voice breaking. The real version had teeth. The real version involved a third matebond she couldn’t shut off, a man she loved who had told her to get the fuck out, a man she loved who she wasn’t supposed to love, and a truth that was going to detonate her relationship with Dexmon.

But the dragon king had asked why she was upset and the easy answer was the only one she could carry right now.

The dragon king didn’t answer.

The silence was deliberate. The silence of someone who had heard enough and was choosing to hold it rather than hand it back. Serena’s eyes closed, and this time her body didn’t ask permission. It just took.

When her eyes opened, the sky had changed. Brighter. Lower. The clouds had thinned and the formation had shifted and Dexmon was speaking behind her, issuing commands with the rapid, clipped authority of a man managing a military operation, except the voice coming out of his mouth was still wrong. Still ancient. Still borrowed.

The dragon king was still here. Still driving.

Velkaris banked and descended.

The ground rose to meet them and she recognized the landing field outside Drakenfell’s main keep. Velkaris touched down with uncharacteristic gentleness, absorbing the impact through his legs like he knew what his passengers could and couldn’t survive right now.

Alaric was already there.

Standing at the edge of the field with a stretcher and two medics flanking him, arms crossed, face arranged in the specific expression of a man who had been woken up, briefed, and given just enough information to be furious about everything he hadn’t been told. A portal shimmered behind him, already open, the infirmary visible through the other side like a window cut into the air.

Elara was on the field.

She saw Serena first. "Serena! What on earth," her eyes locked on the burst vessel painting Serena’s left eye solid red, "your eye is—"

Then her eyes found Charlie.

Both hands flew to her mouth. The sound she made wasn’t a word. It was the noise a person makes when a ghost walks out of a memory they’d buried and stands in front of them wearing chains and bones.

"Oh my gosh. Charlie." She ran to him. Her hands were shaking when they reached his face, tilting it, checking for breath, doing the math on how much of the man she remembered was left inside the skeleton on the stretcher.

Serena slid off Velkaris. Her legs hit the ground and held for exactly three steps.

"Can you save him?" she asked Alaric.

The fourth step didn’t happen.

Her knee buckled, then the other one, and she went down on all fours on the landing field, palms slapping stone, arms shaking under weight that shouldn’t have been heavy because the only thing she was carrying now was herself and apparently that was too much.
