The Alpha's Unwanted Bride

My heart raced in anxiety as everything began to unfold before me.

I took a step back and slowly retracted back to where mother was, my eyes still fixed on the man before me.

"Who is he mother?" I asked.

Hoping that I was wrong.

Hoping that this was some mistake.

"You don’t know already?" Mother asked me with a cocked brow. "He is Aiden. The Alpha’s son. His first son Aiden."

I felt a cold chill down my spine and a slight fever at the same time.

"The young man we were treating is his younger brother. He is next in line to the pack." Mother informed me.

I had gotten myself into a lot of trouble throughout the years.

But this was no simple trouble.

This was not just the a relative of the Alpha of perhaps the Alpha.

It was his first son.

The one who was going to take over the pack one day.

And when he did, he would become Alpha over our annexed territory.

Which meant he would become Alpha over me and I his subject.

Of all people it had to be me.

I began to worry that perhaps there was no way I was going to get out of this one.

He was going to have me executed.

It was the end of my life.

My heart was racing so fast I expected it to top out of my chest any minute from now.

Mother seemed to have been staring at me because she gently touched my arm, bringing me back to reality.

I was startled.

"Is everything alright?" She asked in a low tone.

"Huh? Oh... yes mother. Everything is .... Er... fine." I managed.

She looked at me with suspicious eyes and drew me aside.

"Look if it’s about what happened. I’m sorry I didn’t mean to speak to you that way. I’m only trying to protect you." She said.

I managed a tight smile. "Of course mother. I trust you."

She smiled at me and gently cupped my cheek. "When we are done here we would discuss this."

I nodded.

And then I saw him slowly rise above the bed.

Aiden.

A handsome name for a handsome and yet cruel man.

I chewed on my bottom lip.

"He is awake." Aiden stated.

"Yes." Mother nodded. "The danger is far from him. He would get better in the next few days. It was an epileptic shock that threw him into coma."

He looked back down at his brother and said. "Bale has always been..... fragile."

He sighed in deeply. "I give you my gratitude."

Mother modestly bowed. "I am simply doing my job."

Now I understood why all the other healers were scared of him.

I knew he was the one who had declared the execution of all healers who had treated Bale and failed.

It seemed so strange that someone who was as sweet, cheerful and jovial as Bale was the brother to someone as cruel, cold and hateful as Aiden.

It made no sense.

And yet the way he had bent over Bale to check on him.

If I didn’t know otherwise I would have said he truly did care about his brother.

He walked up to mother and nodded. "I hear that you do not live in this pack house."

"Oh. Yes I didn’t but i....

"You would be employed here. Your services are needed." He stated as he cut in.

It was not a request, but a command.

He didn’t make requests after all.

Mother simply bowed not countering anything he had to say.

The moment mother bowed down to him, his eyes caught with mine.

It felt like a flash of lighting.

The new knowledge I had about him had changed everything.

It was definitely going to be the end of my life.

He walked up to me and just when I expected him to do or say anything, nothing happened.

He walked past me as though I was an insignificant spec of dust.

The large mahogany doors were opened for him and he headed out.

Once the door shut behind him, I gasped for air.

I had no idea how long I had been holding my breath in the first place until he left.

I touched my throat, struggling to breathe.

"Ruby are you okay?" Mother asked me.

I pushed back my wild red curls and nodded. "Yes I am. I just needed a second."

Mother looked at me worry written in her eyes.

I sighed in heavily. "I’m sorry I’m just a bit intimidated by the pack and everything that’s been going on."

"We don’t have to stay here Ruby." Mother said. "We can go back home and find our way around it."

"No !" I said a little too quickly.

She seemed genuinely taken aback.

"I’m sorry. I just don’t want what happened to us to happen again." I said holding her hands.

She sighed and gave me a weak smile.

Bale groaned in his sleep.

Mother left my hands and went to his side.

"Do you think that I....." I didn’t finish the sentence.

"I don’t know." Mother mumbled as she examined him.

"But what we know is that he is safe." She said and then looked up at me. "At least for now. His brother made reference to him always being fragile. I’ll make some investigation on his health challenges then we can figure out how to help him. The epileptic shock is just a pointer in a bigger issue."

"Why do you think they are here mother?" I asked the question that had been haunting.

Mother paused. "I have no idea. We haven’t had one son here Talkless of two. Our territory barely has any reason as to why they would come here. No gold mines, nothing so special. It’s the reason why I chose it in the first place."

She mumbled that last part and I frowned.

"What do you mean by why you chose it." I asked.

"Oh nothing." She waved off her hand. "And now that they are here, Ruby you need to be more careful. We just have to pray the goddess that all is well."

Something told me it wasn’t.

And something told me that I was going to be seeing Aiden more .
