The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 129: Registering a SquadChapter 129: Chapter 129: Registering a Squad
"You mean Colonel Grant?" Kelvin Miller chimed in immediately, his face full of admiration. "He eats and lives with us. It was his suggestion to assign these light-duty jobs in the base to disabled military and government personnel who retired from the front lines."
Miles Dawson curled his lip, a cynical thought crossing his mind. "Could it just be an act?"
"It really isn’t!" Kelvin explained anxiously. "In the cubicle next to mine is Leo Lewis from the Armed Police Detachment, and Vivian Grant from the emergency response team. We are all disabled. Being able to have a job within our capabilities is already something we’re very content with. After all, it’s the apocalypse, and the base can’t afford to feed idlers."
Seeing his earnest expression, Luna Dawson smiled and handed over the completed form. "The form is filled out. Please register us first; there are still people lining up behind us."
Only then did Kelvin notice that the people in line behind them were checking their watches. He hastily took the form, his mouse clicking rapidly as he muttered, "Alright, alright. Twelve people, Sunset Squad... Third Rank?!"
He jerked his head up, a look of utter shock on his face. "All twelve members are at the Third Rank?! And there are two dual-element superpower users?!"
This exclamation instantly threw the entire hall into an uproar!
The people who had been waiting impatiently in line suddenly fell silent, only to erupt into a commotion a second later.
"What? All of them are Third Rank?!"
"You’ve got to be kidding me! The total number of Third-tier Superpower Users in the entire base is less than twenty!"
The survivors huddled in the corners also buzzed with excitement. Those who had been dozing off were instantly jolted awake, perking up their ears to listen. This Sunset Squad was actually composed entirely of High-level members!
Someone sighed in awe, "For just one person to reach the Third Rank requires a massive amount of Crystal Cores. Wouldn’t twelve people have to kill tens of thousands of zombies? This level of strength is simply terrifying!"
Another muttered, "The Young Family and the Quinn Family walk around as if they own the place just because they each have one dual-element superpower user. This team is entirely Third Rank, and they even have two dual-element users holding the fort. It looks like the base’s combat power rankings are about to change!"
The murmurs grew louder and louder. Everyone’s eyes were fixed on Luna and her three companions, filled with a mix of shock and awe. This was undeniably the strongest squad in the base!
Luna offered an awkward smile. She thought to herself, "Thank goodness I didn’t report the levels of our plant and animal legion. At least we kept a trump card hidden."
She quickly searched for a topic to break the tension. "You guys still aren’t off work after five o’clock?"
Kelvin grinned. "We work in two shifts. The morning shift is from eight to four, and the afternoon shift comes in at three-thirty for the handover and works until ten-thirty at night. The base is getting more and more crowded, so we have to make it convenient for everyone to get things done!"
Luna felt a sudden wave of despair. "Even in the apocalypse, we still can’t escape the fate of going to work. I haven’t clocked in at the water plant for days."
A short while later, Kelvin handed back their identification cards. "Captain Dawson, you’re all registered! In the future, when you want to take on missions, you can come to the registration desk or use the self-service counters on either side of the hall."
Luna casually stored the ID cards into her spatial dimension and smiled in thanks. "Thanks a lot!"
She silently calculated her next move. With so many people in the hall knowing that they were all Third Rank, it wouldn’t be long before the name of the Sunset Squad spread throughout the entire base. This would serve as a perfect warning to those with malicious intentions—they shouldn’t think that just any random fool could mess with them!
"Oh, right, Brother Keane!" Kelvin suddenly called out to stop them. "Where do you all live? When Major Coleman and the others return, we’ll find some time to visit and properly thank you!"
Aaron Palmer, walking at the very back, turned around and said in a low voice, "Dragon Lake Villa Area, number 101."
The group waved goodbye to Kelvin, turned around, and walked out of the mission hall. However, the moment they stepped outside, they were stunned by the sight before them.
Outside, it was brightly lit. In the distance, the Sterling Family’s lights spread out in a staggered pattern. Vehicles drove slowly along the roads while crowds of people wove through the streets. They could even hear the shouts of shopkeepers peddling their wares. The streetlamps along the road were all fully illuminated, making the scene so bustling that it didn’t look like the apocalypse at all.
The area surrounding the mission hall was filled with shops that remained open for business even at night. Looking at this familiar scene, Luna almost thought she had returned to the pre-apocalyptic era.
However, this illusion was quickly shattered. Many shop owners were standing at their doors, driving away people dressed in tattered clothes. Those destitute individuals were merely peering in from the entrance without any intention of buying anything, but they inevitably obstructed business.
Luna looked up and saw that the giant advertising billboards for perfumes and cell phones from before the apocalypse were still left on the building facades in the distance. This place had clearly been repurposed from an original commercial plaza!
The exterior 3D LED screens on several well-arranged buildings were all powered on, continuously scrolling through various rescue videos.
They walked into one of the shopping malls, which was also brightly lit inside. However, quite a few people had gathered outside, pressing their faces against the first-floor display windows to peek inside.
The group noticed that the shops inside were all being operated by official staff. The layout was nearly identical to how it was before the apocalypse, with the only difference being that all the goods were priced in points.
"Let’s go check out the point exchange counter on the first floor first!"
As Luna spoke, the group glanced at the elevator floor directory and headed straight for the exchange counter on the left.
Miles marveled as they walked, "The authorities are too amazing! If our family had always lived near here, I would honestly think the apocalypse never happened!"
Aaron frequently glanced back at the military police patrolling the entrance and lowered his voice. "Didn’t you hear what the armed police on duty said? Before the apocalypse broke out, the country received a prophetic email. That’s why they urgently built walls all across the nation."
Luna and Miles instantly broke out in a cold sweat. Miles immediately shut his mouth, not daring to make any more thoughtless remarks.
Then, they heard the patrol officers saying, "I wonder how the Prophet is doing. It would be great if she could just wake up."
Luna was stunned when she heard this. "There’s a Prophet?!"
An old lady running a stall in the corner heard her exclamation and smiled as she looked up. "Young lady, you all haven’t been around here before, have you? The higher-ups announced it a long time ago. Before the apocalypse, there was a Prophet, along with a mysterious warning email, which allowed our country to prepare half a month in advance and build bases nationwide. It’s just a pity. The Prophet suffered a severe backlash for revealing heaven’s secrets and has been in a coma ever since. It’s truly a shame..."
Aaron’s heart jolted. He exchanged a glance with Kevin Keane and then secretly stole a look at Luna. Could there be someone else who, like Luna, knew about the apocalypse in advance?
He quickly leaned closer and asked, "Ma’am, how do you know all this so clearly?"
The old lady offered a kind smile. Picking up a pair of small knitted socks, she held them out to Kevin, who was closest to her. "Young man, do you want to buy some socks? They’re hand-knitted and very warm."
The corners of Kevin’s lips curled up slightly as he teased, "Ma’am, you’re quite a flexible businesswoman."
Luna’s mind was in utter turmoil. She thought, "A Prophet? This never happened in my past life at all!"
She crouched down, looking at the tightly stitched socks in the basket, and simply said, "Ma’am, I’ll take this entire basket of socks! How much for all of them?"
The old lady instantly beamed with joy, the wrinkles on her face smoothing out. "Young lady, do you really want them? Just two points a pair will do."
Her husband was an Earth Ability User who was still building walls despite being in his sixties. Since she didn’t have a superpower herself, she used scavenged yarn to knit scarves and socks to sell in order to subsidize their rent.
The authorities had allocated welfare housing to the families of those who died building the base, but a one-bedroom apartment still cost fifty points a month. In the apocalypse, everyone lived frugally. People were reluctant to replace their socks even if they had holes in them, so she merely came out every day to set up her stall and try her luck.
Luna took out a Second Order Crystal Core and held it out in front of the old lady.
