[…House Cassalanter Osprey Society veteran warrior was hit, taking 77 radiant damage. Current Hit Points: 40/117.]

A string of experience notifications sounded. One unlucky level 10 Ranger had actually been killed in a single attack.

Radiant energy was highly concentrated positive energy, representing holiness and purification. It could dispel darkness, sear spirits and living tissue, and was especially effective against all forms of evil.

Its burst speed was even more terrifying. Someone might react quickly enough to dodge flames, but no one could dodge sunlight.

As long as an enemy had not left the area of effect beforehand, there was no possibility of evading it once it erupted. They could only endure it with their Constitution.

The golden sphere of light created by Sunburst quickly dissipated, but many people's vision remained completely white. Their eyes stung and watered, and their sight was slow to return to normal.

Even faint spots of light lingered in Adolf's vision, despite the fact that he had closed his eyes the instant the spell went off.

He looked somewhat enviously at Giant Tail beside him. Lizardfolk had thick eyelids, and judging by his appearance, he did not seem to have been affected at all.

Anser climbed higher and surveyed the battlefield.

Within the spell's area, only a single warrior remained standing with his shield in hand. The other forty-odd people lay scattered across the ground, already completely still.

For this man to remain standing after taking an 8th-level spell head-on was already something he could be proud of.

"Perfect chance! Charge—"

Stoll growled and launched the charge first, with everyone else quickly following.

The surrounding guards were more than a beat slow to react. It was only when furious shouts came from their superiors that they hurried to intercept them, but their movements were nowhere near as decisive as before. The fear in their eyes had yet to fade.

Who would dare take the lead when their colleagues, still giving off the aroma of cooked meat, were there to remind them what awaited?

"Move!" an Osprey Society officer roared, beside himself with fury.

The enemy had clearly come prepared and had gone straight for a vital point from the outset. If they did not deal with them quickly, the consequences were impossible to imagine.

And against such a powerful spellcaster, the best strategy was attrition—exhaust his spell slots or Magic Power, then let the senior members finish him off.

There was no helping it. The Osprey Society was an intelligence organization. The combatants who excelled at direct assaults had all been transferred to the Moonshae Sea.

His order worked fairly well. The guards picked up their pace considerably, inevitably bunching together as they did.

Scattered gunshots rang out, but the distance between the two sides was too great for them to pose much of a threat to fully armed elite combatants.

By this point, Anser and the others had already covered more than a hundred meters. A top-tier adventuring party could move with astonishing speed.

Makaria and the others never stopped attacking. Javelins and throwing axes whistled through the air, dropping one pursuer after another dozens of meters away.

Stoll stepped over several charred corpses and charged straight at the surviving veteran warrior.

The warrior looked like a shrimp that had been seared bright red. His flesh was split and curling, his eyes tightly shut. Hunched over, he turned toward the sound of approaching footsteps and let out a hoarse, unwilling roar.

"Come on—!"

Stoll's expression did not change. His greatsword came down at the man's head with a heavy whistle.

Clang—!

Driven into a desperate corner, the warrior somehow blocked the blow on instinct. His body lost its balance, yet his expression unexpectedly grew calm.

The greatsword swept diagonally, and the two passed each other.

The warrior's body split in two. One half flew several meters, while the other crashed to the ground and rolled.

That was all.

Anser had no time to care whether the enemy's death had been heroic or tragic. His gaze swept across the surroundings, Truesight capturing every minute change.

'No legendary-level combatants?'

With the commotion caused by Sunburst being so enormous, he refused to believe they had failed to notice it. There were many possible reasons why none had appeared.

The enemy might not be here, or they might be watching from the shadows, waiting for an opportunity.

But as long as they did not show themselves, he did not dare recklessly squander his Magic Power.

'But my Magic Power is as vast as the sea.'

He suddenly spun around and raised his longbow toward the pursuers gathering behind them.

Almost all of the pursuers stopped at the same time. Many closed their eyes, turned their heads, or covered their faces with shields or arms.

That level of coordination... Well, they really were elites.

Whoosh—

An ice sphere the size of a sling bullet streaked through the air with a piercing shriek, flying straight into the crowd.

Boom—!

Extreme cold erupted, forming a rapidly swirling cloud of bone-white icy mist. Frost covered everything it swept across, leaving the ground glittering as though it were a frozen lake in the depths of winter.

The chill swept past the guards who had only managed to run a few meters away. They shivered and turned to look, then immediately froze in shock.

Within the area where the cold had erupted stood human-shaped ice sculptures in all manner of poses. Some were running, some were crouching, and quite a few still had their eyes closed.

[…House Cassalanter Osprey Society veteran Barbarian was hit. Constitution Saving Throw succeeded. Took 42 cold damage. Current Hit Points: 131/173.]

'Another veteran combatant!'

Listening to the dense stream of experience notifications, Anser couldn't keep the smile from reaching his eyes.

This was an 8th-level Maximized Otiluke's Freezing Sphere. Thanks to Elemental Affinity, both its destructive power and its area of effect were a notch above Sunburst.

He had the Elemental Adept Feat. As long as the target wasn't immune to cold, he could ignore most resistance.

After a brief silence, the other guards scattered one after another, shrinking back and no longer daring to approach.

The Six-Winged Sorcerer's casting range, area of effect, and destructive power were simply absurd. Two spells had wiped out half the guards.

Their firearms couldn't even reach him. How the hell were they supposed to fight this?!

Quite a few people looked toward their own superiors, and the meaning in their gazes couldn't have been clearer.

Wasn't this the kind of situation where the higher-ups were supposed to lead the elites in surrounding and attacking the enemy? Why should they have to throw away their lives just to wear him down? Did that even accomplish anything?

When the situation became critical, their leaders refused to act and instead hid in the rear. Unless someone was fanatically loyal, there was no way they wouldn't have thoughts about that.

Anser laughed inwardly. Magic Power surged around him as he drew his bowstring once more, but his target quietly changed.

Innate Sorcery + Metamagic: Enhanced Quickened Spell, Enhanced Distant Spell, Maximized Spell + Sunburst!

More than two hundred meters away, the aberrant Sorcerer's expression changed drastically. Light and shadow flashed around him, and he reappeared dozens of meters away.

At the same time, blinding golden light suddenly erupted, shining with abandon as it poured boundless light and heat over every creature within its area, purifying everything.

The guards who had been looking toward their own leader happened to witness the birth of a second golden sun. Their eyes, which had only just mostly recovered, burned with pain, and tears streamed down their faces.

The scene looked like a congregation of sun-worshiping believers moving themselves to tears.

[Target killed. Gained 365 experience points.]

[…House Cassalanter Osprey Society peak-level Rogue was hit. Constitution Saving Throw succeeded. Took 39 radiant damage. Current Hit Points: 89/128.]

That Arcane Trickster had succeeded on his Constitution Saving Throw. There was no way a combatant of his level wouldn't have at least a few pieces of lifesaving equipment.

But the senior members' trusted subordinates around him were nowhere near as fortunate. Without specialized magic equipment, they could only endure the blast head-on, and their losses were devastating.

Of the thirty or forty people there, fewer than ten survived!

"Hey, my turn!"

Stoll laughed loudly, changed direction, and charged toward the aberrant Sorcerer among the Osprey Society's senior ranks.

Their goal from the very beginning had been to maneuver around and help Anser clear the field. After several 8th-level spells, the results had been spectacular.
