**Chapter 31 — The Price of Alliance**

The silence in the private hall stretched until it became almost tangible. The mana-lamps continued to glow with steady light, casting soft reflections across the untouched dishes and the spread of damning documents. Outside, the night wind brushed against the heavy curtains, but inside the room every breath felt measured.

Ren finally spoke.

His voice was calm, clear, and without any hesitation.

“Before we go any further, I will state my conditions. These are not requests. They are the terms under which we will cooperate.”

Seraphina straightened slightly in her chair. Silvia’s violet eyes focused completely on him. Lyra remained quiet beside Ren, watching the exchange with sharp attention.

“First,” Ren began, “we will not be used as political tools and then thrown away when we are no longer convenient. Any cooperation will be limited to the goals we agree on. No hidden orders. No sudden changes in the deal.”

Seraphina gave a small nod. “Accepted.”

“Second,” Ren continued, “I want revenge against Prince Cedric and Duke Hadrian Voss. Not only for what they did to Lyra’s tribe, but for the kind of people they are. When the time comes, I will be involved in their downfall.”

“That aligns with my own goals,” Seraphina replied. “I have no objection.”

“Third. Equal standing. I will not take orders from you. We cooperate as equals. You will speak to both me and Lyra with respect at all times.”

“I already agreed to this earlier,” Seraphina said. “It remains accepted.”

Ren’s gaze did not soften.

“Fourth. Lyra’s slave status will be completely annulled. She will be recognized as a free commoner. However, neither of us will accept noble titles that tie us to the Kingdom of Valdoria or any other nation. Becoming nobles under your kingdom would only force us into your political structure. We refuse that.”

For the first time, a faint ripple of surprise passed through Seraphina’s eyes. Most people in their position would have seized noble rank without hesitation. She studied him for a moment longer before answering.

“Very well. Lyra’s slave contract will be fully annulled. She will be a free commoner. And I will not force noble titles upon either of you.”

Ren gave a slight nod, then delivered the final condition.

“Last. You will grant me territory — land that is completely separate from the authority of any existing ruler. Once it is given, your nation will have nothing to say about what I do with it. I will develop it however I see fit.”

The atmosphere in the room shifted.

Seraphina did not answer immediately. This condition was clearly heavier than the others. Granting land that would fall entirely outside royal control was not a small matter, even for a princess. Silvia remained perfectly still, but her silence carried weight.

After a long moment of thought, Seraphina exhaled softly.

“Territory that is completely independent… that is difficult. Most lands within the kingdom are already tied to noble houses or royal administration. However…”

She glanced at Silvia, then looked back at Ren.

“There is one place. An island on the northwestern edge of the continent. It is very large — approximately four hundred twenty-three thousand eight hundred forty square kilometers. It has freshwater lakes and rivers, dense forests, mountain ranges, and even a desert region. Geographically it sits in a position where it connects the sea routes near the human nations, the Beast Nation, and the distant elven territories.”

Seraphina’s voice remained steady as she continued.

“Long ago it was home to a Dark Elf settlement. Silvia lived there in her youth. But after a devastating war, monsters flooded the island. For more than fifty years, no humans or organized races have lived there. The land is considered cursed, dangerous, and without value. No nation currently has any interest in claiming it.”

She met Ren’s eyes directly.

“That island was given to me by the king on the formal suggestion of the queen as a birthday gift many years ago. Because it was seen as worthless, no one opposed it. Legally, it belongs to me alone. I may dispose of it as I wish.”

A faint, almost ironic smile touched her lips.

“If you are willing to accept a monster-infested island that no one else wants, then I can transfer the full deed to you. Once it is in your name, Valdoria will have no further claim or authority over it.”

Ren was silent for several seconds. In his mind he was already evaluating the strategic value. An isolated landmass of that size, with varied terrain and no current political ownership, was not worthless at all. For someone who had chosen the path of Territorial Commander, it was close to ideal.

He gave a single nod.

“I accept the island.”

Seraphina’s shoulders relaxed almost imperceptibly.

“Then we have an agreement on all points.”

She straightened in her chair, her tone becoming more formal.

“Tomorrow morning you may collect the necessary documents from me. I will prepare three things. First, an official letter addressed to the King of Fenrisgard explaining the full conspiracy and proposing peace. Second, the formal annulment of Lyra’s slave contract. Third, the legal deed transferring ownership of the island to you.”

She looked at both of them in turn.

“Once those documents are in your hands, our cooperation will officially begin.”

Seraphina paused for a moment, then continued in a slightly different tone.

“However… before that, I have a different matter to discuss with you. It is a personal wish of both myself and Silvia.”

Her deep blue eyes moved briefly toward the Dark Elf standing behind her, then returned to Ren and Lyra.

“It is something separate from the alliance we have just formed.”

The atmosphere in the room shifted once again, becoming quieter and more personal than the political negotiation that had come before.

Outside the luxurious inn, the night continued to deepen over the quiet town.

Inside the private hall, the first true alliance of convenience between a rejected princess and two wandering outcasts had just been formed — and a new, more personal conversation was about to begin.
