Chapter 26 — Paths and Invitations
Morning light filtered through the thin curtains of the inn room as Ren and Lyra finished a simple breakfast. The air still carried the quiet tension of the previous night, but both of them moved with purpose.
“We’ll sell what we don’t need,” Ren said while checking the physical bags. “Keep the Tyrant materials, the Manaheart Fruit, the Wolf Leader Bones, and every Mana and Magic Stone. Everything else goes.”
Lyra nodded and adjusted her hood. Her hair remained dyed brown for the time being. Together they left the inn and walked toward the Adventurer Guild.
The guild hall was already busy with early parties turning in materials. When Ren placed their goods on the counter — five stalks of Moonveil Grass, common wolf and rabbit parts, low-grade drops, and various lesser monster materials — the receptionist’s eyes widened slightly at the quality of the rare grass.
After careful appraisal, the total came to **7,200 gold coins**. Combined with their previous funds, their total usable wealth now stood at approximately **13,400 gold coins**. Ren stored the new gold without expression, then left the guild with Lyra beside him.
By early noon they had returned to their inn.

At nearly the same time, a small group of riders entered the town from the main road. At the center rode a young woman in a simple but finely made travel cloak that did little to hide the quiet authority in her posture. Princess Seraphina had arrived.
She was guided directly to a discreet location where Silvia waited. The Dark Elf knelt briefly before rising.
“Your Highness.”
Seraphina removed her hood. “Report everything again. In detail.”
Silvia spoke clearly and without emotion, recounting the battles, the strange weapon, the confirmed identity of the silver-haired wolf beastwoman, and the man’s unnatural combat ability. When she finished, Seraphina remained silent for several long seconds.
“I will meet them directly,” the princess finally said. “No more observation from the shadows. Prepare a private room at the most luxurious inn this town has. Send them a formal letter requesting their presence this evening. Make it polite… but clear that refusal would be unwise.”
Silvia bowed her head. “As you command.”

Back in their modest inn room, Ren sat at the small table and opened the system interface once more. The two Future Path options still glowed quietly at the bottom of the panel. With the spies aware of them and an unknown power moving behind the scenes, he could no longer delay the decision.
He opened the full descriptions.
**Path 1: Modern Army Summoner**
Summon fully trained modern soldiers, engineers, medical staff, and support personnel directly from the system.
Pros: Instant combat-ready forces. No training time required. Absolute loyalty. Can be summoned and dismissed at will. Ideal for rapid response and overwhelming force in a short period.
Cons: Summoned personnel cannot be transferred or left behind. They exist only while the Host lives. No permanent growth of local power. Limited by system constraints and gold costs for large numbers. Cannot build lasting institutions or infrastructure independent of the Host.
**Path 2: Territorial Commander (World-Born Forces)**
Recruit, train, and develop soldiers, engineers, medical staff, and specialists from the people of this world.
Pros: Forces are permanent and can grow beyond the Host. Can establish bases, factories, training grounds, and eventually a nation. Knowledge and technology can be passed on. Creates lasting power and influence. Loyalty can be earned through shared purpose and results.
Cons: Requires significant time, resources, land, and effort. Training takes months or years. Initial forces will be weaker than summoned modern soldiers. Political complications arise once territory or large numbers of people become involved. Greater responsibility and risk of betrayal if loyalty is not properly managed.
Ren read both descriptions twice.
Path 1 was tempting. Instant soldiers, ready to fight, completely loyal. It would solve many immediate problems. But the more he thought about it, the less he liked it. Those soldiers would only exist as long as he lived. The moment he died, everything would vanish. There would be no lasting foundation, no people who truly belonged to this world, and nothing that could continue protecting Lyra or anyone else after he was gone.
He had already died once on a battlefield. He knew how fragile temporary strength could be. He did not want an army that would disappear with him. He wanted to build something real — people from this world who could grow stronger, learn, and eventually stand on their own. Even if the path was slower and harder, it would create permanent power and a future that did not depend only on his life.
He selected Path 2.
**Future Path Confirmed: Territorial Commander**
(Unofficial status. Full activation requires territory or a formal base of operations.)
The system acknowledged the choice with a quiet pulse of light. No dramatic change occurred, but Ren felt the path settle into place.
A knock sounded at the door.
Lyra opened it carefully. A well-dressed messenger stood outside and presented a sealed letter on a silver tray. Ren took it, broke the seal, and read the contents in silence.
The letter was formal and written on high-quality paper. It requested the presence of “Adventurer Ren and his companion” at the town’s most luxurious inn that evening for a private discussion of mutual interest. The tone was polite, yet the underlying authority was unmistakable.
Ren looked at Lyra.
“We’ve been invited to a meeting. This evening. At the best inn in town. It seems the people watching us have decided to step into the open.”
Lyra’s ears twitched beneath her hood. “Do we go?”
“We go,” Ren answered. “Running now would only confirm we’re afraid. Better to face them and learn what they want.”
They spent the next hours preparing. Ren cleaned up and changed into the better set of clothes they had purchased earlier. Lyra carefully adjusted her appearance, keeping the brown dye for now but ensuring she looked presentable. Both of them checked their hidden weapons and emergency supplies.
As the afternoon began to fade into early evening, they left their modest inn and walked through the quieter streets toward the designated location.
The luxurious inn stood out immediately. Even in a town that had grown somewhat unpopular and quieter over the years, this building retained an air of old wealth. Polished stone steps, elegant mana-lamps that glowed with steady white light, and staff dressed in clean formal uniforms greeted them at the entrance. The interior was even more striking — soft carpets, carved wooden panels, and the faint scent of expensive incense.
Ren and Lyra exchanged a brief glance. Neither had expected such refinement in a place like this.
A senior staff member bowed respectfully and guided them down a quiet hallway to a private meeting hall. The room was spacious, with a long polished table, comfortable chairs, and tall windows covered by heavy curtains. Refreshments had already been prepared.
Standing near the side of the room, dressed in the neat uniform of a high-end servant, was a familiar face.
Alex.
He kept his expression perfectly neutral as he stepped forward, poured water into two crystal glasses, and placed them on the table with practiced grace. Only the faintest tension in his shoulders betrayed that he was anything other than ordinary staff.
Ren’s eyes met his for a fraction of a second. Recognition passed between them, unspoken.
Lyra sat down carefully, her wand resting within easy reach beneath the table. Ren took the seat beside her, posture relaxed but ready.
They waited in the quiet luxury of the room, the soft glow of mana-lamps reflecting off polished surfaces.
Somewhere beyond the door, footsteps approached.
The meeting that would decide the next stage of their path was about to begin.
