The Atomic Archmage: Hacking the Skill Panel with Science
Chapter 62: The Frictionless BathSylvia Von-Rose’s brain, already reeling from her humiliating, frictionless slide across the marble floor, finally and completely short-circuited.
The thick, lavender-scented steam drifting across the surface of the sunken pool parted, revealing the fourteen-year-old Lord of the Valerius Barony in agonizing, hyper-focused clarity.
Ren was sitting on the submerged marble bench on the opposite side of the massive tub. He was leaning back, his arms resting casually along the polished stone rim. His dark hair, usually impeccably styled, was wet and clinging to his forehead, framing his sharp, aristocratic features and those dark, endlessly deep eyes that always seemed to be calculating the exact weight of the universe.
And he was entirely, unapologetically shirtless.
Sylvia stood frozen in the four-foot-deep water. Her emerald eyes widened to impossible proportions as they locked onto his torso.
Despite his age, Ren did not look like a soft, pampered noble. Seven years of forcefully channeling raw, Omni-Elemental mana—and constantly breaking his own biological limits to rewrite the laws of physics—had refined his physique into a lean, perfectly sculpted framework. His muscles were tightly coiled, radiating an intense, almost dangerous amount of ambient heat that made the water around him ripple with thermal distortion.
"Y-You..." Sylvia stammered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak that absolutely destroyed her haughty facade. She scrambled backward, the water splashing loudly around her. "You're naked!"
"I am in a bath, Lady Sylvia," Ren replied smoothly, his tone carrying the exact same clinical, detached boredom he had used while lecturing her on air density in the arena. "Standard operating procedure generally dictates the removal of one's clothing prior to submersion. It appears you missed that step in the syllabus."
Sylvia looked down at herself and let out a horrified gasp.
Her dark velvet infiltration cloak was completely saturated, dragging her down like a lead weight. Beneath it, her crimson silk nightgown—which was highly expensive and totally opaque when dry—had become instantly, scandalously translucent in the water. The wet silk clung to every single curve of her fifteen-year-old frame with terrifying precision.
She frantically crossed her arms over her chest, her face flushing such a brilliant, violent shade of red that it rivaled the color of her fiery hair.
"Turn around!" Sylvia shrieked, sinking lower into the water until it reached her collarbone, trying to hide her blushing face behind the billowing steam. "Close your eyes, you perverted peasant! How dare you look at me!"
Ren didn't blink. He didn't turn around. He didn't even look flustered.
"I assure you, I am merely observing the chaotic variables you have introduced into my controlled environment," Ren stated, resting his chin on his hand. He looked at the heavy, soaked velvet cloak weighing her down. "Though I am curious. Did you miscalculate the spatial dimensions of the hallway, or were you simply unaware of the concept of friction?"
Sylvia’s teeth ground together. "I... I was tripped! By one of your illegal traps!"
"It wasn't a trap," Ren corrected, his lips curling into a faint, amused smile. "It was a hygiene protocol. The formula for frictional force is F = μN. Force equals the coefficient of friction multiplied by the normal force. In order to prevent the tracking of biological contaminants into the bathing chamber, I simply set the coefficient of friction, mu, to mathematical zero. You were not tripped. You simply attempted to walk in a space where walking was physically impossible."
Sylvia stared at him, her mouth opening and closing like a stranded fish.
He wasn't embarrassed. He wasn't intimidating her with a wand. He was sitting shirtless in a hot spring, treating her deeply humiliating, highly compromising infiltration like a physics lecture.
"You're insane," Sylvia whispered, her heart hammering frantically against her ribs.
She needed to leave. She needed to climb out of this bath, escape the suite, and never, ever speak of this night again.
"I am leaving," Sylvia declared, trying to inject some of her standard aristocratic haughtiness back into her voice. It failed miserably, mostly because she had to sneeze halfway through the sentence as the lavender-scented steam tickled her nose.
She turned around and waded toward the shallow end of the pool, where a set of marble stairs led out of the water.
But as she moved, a strange, overwhelming sensation began to spread through her body.
The water, Sylvia realized, her legs suddenly feeling incredibly heavy. It's... it's perfect.
The baths in the Crimson Duke's estate were luxurious, heated by expensive fire-stones, but they always had cold spots. They always cooled down too fast, or scalded the skin if you sat too close to the runes.
This water was different.
Ren had used thermodynamics to instantly and perfectly heat the entire massive volume of water. The specific heat capacity equation, Q = mcΔT, had been executed with microscopic perfection. The water was exactly one hundred and four degrees Fahrenheit, completely uniform from top to bottom.
But it wasn't just hot. Ren had also manipulated the mineral density, synthesizing the exact chemical composition of a natural, volcanic healing spring.
As the perfectly heated, mineral-rich water soaked into Sylvia's skin, it began to aggressively target the lactic acid built up in her muscles from the day's intense magical exams.
Sylvia reached the first marble step, but her knees suddenly buckled.
A deep, involuntary sigh escaped her lips. The tension in her shoulders completely melted away. The profound, mind-numbing relaxation was so intense, so scientifically optimized to dismantle physical stress, that her aristocratic defenses were completely bypassed.
"No..." Sylvia murmured, trying to force her legs to climb the steps. "Must... climb..."

"I do not recommend attempting to stand with a soaked velvet cloak, Lady Sylvia," Ren advised calmly from across the pool. "Velvet is incredibly porous. It has currently absorbed approximately thirty pounds of water. Your center of gravity is compromised."
Sylvia ignored him. Her pride demanded she climb out.
She planted her foot on the second marble step and pushed up, trying to haul her soaking, heavy frame out of the water.
Ren was mathematically correct.
The sheer, sodden weight of the thirty-pound velvet cloak pulled violently backward at her shoulders. Combined with muscles that had just been liquefied by the perfect thermodynamic heat of the bath, her legs completely gave out.
"Ah!" Sylvia cried out, her wet foot slipping off the marble step.
She fell backward, plummeting toward the deep end of the pool, her heavy cloak wrapping around her like an anchor.
She braced herself to hit the water and sink.
She never hit the water.
In a fraction of a second, the water around Ren violently displaced. He didn't swim; he commanded the fluid dynamics of the pool, parting the water to eliminate all drag as he shot across the massive bath with terrifying speed.
Before Sylvia could even gasp, a strong, incredibly warm arm wrapped firmly around her waist.
The heavy, downward pull of the soaked cloak abruptly stopped.
Sylvia’s eyes snapped open.
Ren had caught her. He was standing in the four-foot water, holding her tightly against him to keep her from going under.
The sudden, intense skin-to-skin contact sent a massive, paralyzing jolt of electricity straight through Sylvia's nervous system. The front of her soaking, sheer silk nightgown was pressed flush against his bare, sculpted chest. She could feel the intense, burning heat of his body—a heat that rivaled the perfect water around them.
She could smell the clean, sharp scent of ozone and mint radiating from his skin. She could feel the steady, calm, perfectly rhythmic beating of his heart against her collarbone.
"I warned you about the center of gravity," Ren murmured, his face mere inches from hers. His voice was low, smooth, and entirely unbothered by the highly intimate position they were currently tangled in.
Sylvia’s brain completely shut down.
Every single drop of aristocratic pride, every ounce of haughty superiority she had spent fifteen years building, instantly vaporized under the sheer, overwhelming proximity of the boy holding her.
Her face flushed so violently it felt like she had cast a fire spell directly onto her own cheeks. Her breath came in short, frantic gasps, her emerald eyes locked onto his dark ones, completely unable to look away.
"L-Let me go," Sylvia stammered, though her hands instinctively gripped his bare shoulders to keep herself steady, her fingers trembling against his hot skin.
"If I let you go, you will sink," Ren stated factually. "The velvet is too heavy. Hold still."
He didn't give her a chance to argue.
Ren adjusted his grip around her waist. He didn't struggle with the extra thirty pounds of water weight. Instead, he simply pushed a micro-burst of mana into the air around them, slightly altering the localized gravitational constant, lowering g in the W = mg equation.
To Ren, she suddenly weighed no more than a feather.
He effortlessly lifted her out of the water, carrying her in a flawless bridal style.
Sylvia squeaked, entirely helpless as he walked up the marble steps, the water cascading off their bodies. He carried her out of the bathing chamber and into the massive, open-concept master bedroom, completely bypassing the massive bed where the Vanguard was still fast asleep.
"Why aren't they waking up?" Sylvia whispered frantically, burying her furiously blushing face into his neck so she wouldn't have to look at him, hyper-aware that she was being carried by a shirtless boy.
"Acoustic phase-cancellation," Ren explained calmly, his breath tickling her ear. "I created a standing wave of destructive interference around the bed. You could detonate a bomb in this room, and Elara would not hear it until morning. It ensures they receive eight hours of perfectly uninterrupted REM sleep."
Sylvia squeezed her eyes shut. He's manipulating the speed of sound just so his maids can sleep well? What is wrong with him?!
Ren carried her to a plush velvet armchair near the balcony doors and gently set her down.
The cold night air blowing through the cracked glass doors immediately hit Sylvia’s soaked silk nightgown. She shivered violently, wrapping her arms around her chest.
Ren didn't leer at her. He didn't take advantage of her highly compromising, sheer clothing. He simply turned around, snapped his fingers, and pulled a massive, pristine white towel from the wardrobe using a subtle telekinetic pull.
He tossed the towel over Sylvia’s head, completely covering her shivering frame.
Before Sylvia could pull the towel off, she felt a sudden, intense wave of heat wash over her. Ren was manipulating the thermodynamics of the towel itself, channeling a localized, perfectly regulated warmth directly into the spider-silk fibers. It felt like being wrapped in a blanket fresh out of a roaring dryer.
Sylvia pulled the incredibly soft, heated towel down slightly, peaking out over the fluffy white edge.
Ren was standing a few feet away, having retrieved a dry white dress shirt and casually buttoning it up, finally covering his chest. He picked up his carbon-stone pocket watch from the nightstand and checked the time.
"It is one in the morning, Lady Sylvia," Ren said, not looking at her. "The primary locks on the balcony doors are re-engaged, but I have left the friction off the outer banister. You may use it to slide down to the courtyards."
Sylvia sat in the plush chair, completely paralyzed by the heated towel, her heart still racing at a terrifying speed.
She had broken into his room to humiliate him. She had intended to expose him as a fraud and a peasant.
Instead, she had slipped on a frictionless floor, nearly drowned in a mathematically perfect hot spring, and had been effortlessly carried by the most terrifyingly intelligent, impossibly composed boy she had ever met. He had seen her completely vulnerable, completely stripped of her pride, and he hadn't mocked her. He had simply wrapped her in a warm towel and told her the door was open.
"Why?" Sylvia asked, her voice small, muffled by the thick towel. "Why didn't you wake them? Why didn't you turn me in? I broke into your suite."
Ren finished buttoning his shirt. He finally turned to look at her, his dark eyes softening just a fraction, revealing a brief, terrifying glimpse of the warm, deeply caring boy buried beneath the cold physicist.
"Because, Lady Sylvia," Ren said softly. "You did not break in to hurt us. You broke in because you were curious. And curiosity is the foundational prerequisite for all scientific advancement."
He offered her a faint, knowing smile.
"However, next time you wish to study my methods, I suggest you simply knock on the front door during daylight hours. It is significantly better for your wardrobe."
Sylvia stared at him, the perfectly heated towel suddenly feeling entirely inadequate to contain the overwhelming, burning heat in her chest.
The haughty, untouchable prodigy of the Crimson Duke didn't say another word. She couldn't. If she opened her mouth, she was terrified she might just burst into tears—or worse, ask him to hold her again.
She scrambled out of the chair, clutching the heated towel tightly around her soaked nightgown. She practically sprinted to the balcony doors, her face buried in the white silk to hide her furious blush.
She fled into the night, sliding down the frictionless banister just as he had promised, disappearing into the shadows of the Academy grounds.
Ren stood in the center of the massive room, watching the balcony doors swing shut.
He pulled his pocket watch out one last time, checking the ticking gears.
"Phase one complete," Ren whispered to himself, a brilliant, terrifyingly confident smile touching his lips. "The aristocratic barrier is breached."
He turned off his acoustic phase-cancellation spell, the ambient silence of the room returning to normal. He walked over to the massive, sprawling mega-bed where his Vanguard slept.
Elara immediately shifted in her sleep, sensing his approach. Kira let out a soft, happy hum, rolling over to make space in the exact center of the mattress.
Ren laid down, pulling the frictionless silk sheets over himself. In less than three seconds, Kira’s silver tail had wrapped over his chest, and Elara’s hand had reached out to lightly rest against his shoulder, naturally gravitating toward his ambient warmth.
As Ren closed his eyes, preparing for sleep, he knew tomorrow would be chaotic. But as he felt the steady, loyal breathing of his Vanguard surrounding him, the physicist couldn't help but feel that the variables in his life were finally beginning to align into a perfectly balanced equation.
