The Bee Dungeon

Chapter 402 - Building New Bee-ginnings

Belissar greeted the new queens, welcoming them to the hive of hives, then set about building new beehouses and bee apartments for the queens that wouldn’t be staying in the Beecity. He upgraded the beehouses for the toxic, slime, and swimming bees in the Bog, the burning and ash bees in the Lava Field, the chromatic bees in the Fairy Grove, and the thermal mining bees in the Dirt Tunnels to bee apartments. The First of the Fifth’s Sixth Daughter had also raised a new gravity queen but given that her beehouse was built into a floating island with limited space, Belissar decided to build a new beehouse on a different island for her daughter.

With the increase in swimming bee queens, Belissar now gave serious thought to some of his Water rooms. While the Abyssal Trench and the new Stormy Coast were still off-limits even to the swimming bees, there was nothing stopping them from flying and swimming in the Muddy Seabed. A few swimming workers already did, in fact, Belissar had forgotten but he had planted mana flowers there back when the room was still a Dirt Tunnels. Those flowers had duly adapted as the room flooded and the mana shifted and had become Water mana flowers, happily growing in the mud.

Still, there were only a few of them, so the rest of the seabed was barren at present. Belissar thus asked Tarwantrad and Nenavann for advice. Both of them happily gave him seeds for mundane seagrass and seaflowers, which Belissar planted around the Muddy Seabed. Nenavann also offered to help Belissar build boats suitable for the room that he could build beehouses on, once there were enough flowers to sustain swimming bee hives.

But that would be for the future, as Belissar was letting the seagrass and seaflowers grow naturally. For now, he moved the entire Apiary and Beecity floor up to the new eighth floor, so that they’d be by the core room as usual, then moved the Muddy Seabed from the second floor to the now empty seventh floor. Since he was growing flowers and eventually going to house bees there, he wanted to keep it out of the defense area. Instead, Belissar created a new, empty Muddy Seabed as a battle room to fill in the second floor.

With that addressed, the last thing left to do was to make arrangements for the new shining bees. In that case, the Second of the Seventh had a request.

“King, can move to light forest? Has lots of light, will help daughters grow?”

Belissar smiled at the shining queen.

“Of course, let’s just go to talk to the dragon first, though.”

“Ok!”

And so, Belissar, Niobee, and the Second of the Seventh made their way to the Dragonvein Aurora Forest, accompanied by the Firstborn who volunteered to come along once she heard they were talking to the dragon hatchling. The light dragon hatchling was currently resting in the forest, munching on mana honeycomb and a deer that had been dismantled by the butcher and bloodsucking bees. The dragon noticed their approach and turned to face them while keeping his body on the ground. Belissar walked up to the dragon.

“Hi there, how are you?”

The dragon finished a bite of deer meat and licked his fangs clean. Belissar took that as a good sign.

“Glad to see you’re working with the bees. Would you mind if some more of them moved into the room? You won’t hurt them, right?”

The light dragon’s eyes widened. He rose to his feet and stepped over to the Firstborn, gently nudging his snout towards her. The Firstborn landed on the dragon, who then laid back down on the ground.

“King, dragon part of hive of hives now. Trains with soldiers, hunts with butchers and bloodsuckers. Won’t hurt bees.”

Belissar smiled.

“Great, then meet the Second of the Seventh! She and her daughters are going to live here from now on too.”

The Second of the Seventh zipped over and danced a happy greeting. Her wings caught the light of the aurora overhead and made her whole body glow with a sparkling rainbow. The light dragon stared at her and then spread his wings, causing his scales to catch the light and match her glow. The Second of the Seventh paused, then channeled mana to her antenna, causing them to glow even brighter, while the light dragon shifted and made his scales ripple and shimmer.

The Second of the Seventh then began a max speed dance around the dragon.

“Amazing! Incredible! Dragon has so much light mana!”

The light dragon rose to his feet and held his head up high. Belissar grinned, it seemed the light dragon would get along with his new neighbors perfectly well.

Belissar then got to work, calling in the Third of the Third’s hive and the karnuq to help him build a new Bee Apartment, customized as the Second of the Seventh wanted. Only half of the apartment had walls and a roof, the trays were installed perpendicular to the longest wall such that most of each tray was out in the open and basking in the light of the forest. The Second of the Seventh noted that there was so much Light mana in the room that even shining bees might get overwhelmed, particularly her new daughters, so they kept a part of each tray in the shade where the bees could rest. The rest of the structure was simply a frame to help hold the trays, the shining bees could fill in the walls with their own, translucent wax if they needed cover from the elements.

Since they only needed to build part of a structure, Belissar and his helpers finished the work quickly, then invited the Second of the Seventh and her daughters into their new home. The light dragon watched from a distance while the structure was being built, he now got closer as the bees settled in. He licked his lips when he saw the Second of the Seventh’s honey reserves, but he did not bother them during the move.

Belissar smiled, satisfied that the bees were happy and the light dragon would behave. Hopefully, they get along even better from now on.

Belissar’s work was not done that day, however. A number of the new queens had needed to evolve, so when Belissar awoke the next day, Niobee informed him the hive of hives had more bees to introduce him to. Belissar quickly made his offerings to the gods, then went to the Beecity to meet the new bees.

Belissar bounced on his feet as the new bees crawled out of their cells and flew to him. The First of the Fifth’s First Daughter lined them up in a row and then flew before him, happily introducing each one to him in turn.

“This one Third of the Eighth’s Third Daughter, mated with Fourth of the Fifth’s drone!”

The evolved swimming bee was sleek with wider and flatter feet like her mother, but had the brown colors and thicker mandibles of a digging bee.

Should they encounter ground too hard, they can create moisture to soften it up and turn the dirt to mud. They often build their hives near or even underwater, as they can also remove moisture to harden up the walls of their hive. This one is a queen that lays muddy variant offspring by default.

“This one First of the Sixth’s First Daughter’s Second Daughter! Mated with Third of the Eighth’s drone!”

The queen was hard to distinguish from a normal blinding queen, seeing as both were pitch black. Belissar had to look closely to notice that this queen seemed to have a black fluid of some sort dripping off of her hairs.

“This one Third of the Fourth’s Third Daughter! Mated with Fourth of the Eighth’s drone!”

The digging bee’s daughter had reverted to normal black and yellow bee colors at first glance. However, her black chitin was shinier than normal, almost looking like it was some sort of metal, while the yellow was bright and vibrant and almost seemed to glow.

In addition to the usual digging monster bee abilities, this bee can generate magnetic fields to manipulate metal, allowing it to tunnel through metal ores with far greater ease than other digging monster bees. Or through metal armor, should an armored individual attempt to disturb a magnetic monster bee hive. This one is a queen that lays magnetic variant offspring by default.

“This one Fourth of the Seventh’s Fifth Daughter! Amazing, incredible! Mated with Third of the Eighth’s drone!”

The Fourth of the Seventh’s Fifth Daughter appeared to have been a breeze bee, since she was shaped more like a normal monster bee than a nomadic bee. Her chitin was a light, grayish-blue.

Mist Monster Bee Queen

Notable Skills: Poison Sting, Mist, Misty Breeze, Mist Sense, Brood Mother, Command Offspring

Description: A breeze monster bee modified by Water type mana. In addition to the usual breeze monster bee abilities, this bee generates mist whenever it flies. Swarms of mist bees create a dense fog that blinds predators. The bees themselves leave bits of their mana in the mist, allowing them to sense anything within it. This one is a queen that lays mist variant offspring by default.

Belissar had the biggest grin on his face as he held the new bees in his hands.

“Welcome to the Tower and the hive of hives, all of you.”
