The Knicks winning the season opener, with Su Xi defeating both Kobe and Yao Ming, was a huge boost to the team’s morale.
After all, plenty of people had been ’worried’ about the Knicks beforehand.
For the defending champions, starting the new season off with a bang was essential.
In fact, the Knicks had also managed a winning streak during the preseason. It’s just that many people didn’t consider the preseason to be indicative of anything, dismissing it as proof that the young Knicks could still run and hadn’t wasted their offseason.
Su Xi gave an interview after the game. After putting up 49 points, 9 assists, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks, he told reporters, "My goal this season is to win the scoring title. That’s why I went shot-for-shot with Kobe in the fourth quarter. I want to prove one thing: when I decide to score, nobody can stop me. Any team that doesn’t believe me can give it a try."
Su Xi was being incredibly arrogant, and his comments were seen by some as brimming with conceit.
Yet, no one dared to step up and refute him.
Such was the power of Goat Su Xi.
The Los Angeles media pressed Su Xi on his goal for the new season. Su Xi replied with the same line: "Other than the championship, what else could be my goal?"
Su Xi’s sheer dominance was palpable.
When a reporter from Los Angeles asked for his take on Yao Ming joining the Lakers, he said, "I think the Lakers will return to the Finals."
This was high praise coming from Su Xi.
The competition in the West is far more intense than in the East.
Whether you respected Goat Su Xi or not, you had to admit he had completely demolished the competition in the East over the past few years.
After losing Su Xi, the Indiana Pacers also lost both Marbury and Stephen Jackson in succession this season, seemingly taking them out of the running for the championship. The Miami Heat had had their spirit broken. The Detroit Pistons’ "Blue-Collar Five" were down to four and in disarray; last season they were even upset by a comeback from James and the Knights.
Looking at the Eastern Conference as a whole, who could possibly stand up to the Knicks?
Perhaps the Cavaliers, who were currently making eyes at Shaquille O’Neal. If they really could land O’Neal, then with James entering his prime and O’Neal still at the tail end of his, they might have a chance to compete with the Knicks.
So, even though the Knicks were thought to have lost more than half of their championship roster this season, they were still an unbeatable force in the East.
The Lakers, in contrast, faced much fiercer competition. They had to contend with the Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs, and Mavericks for playoff positioning, and the teams ranked below them weren’t necessarily weak either. Many Western teams had the potential to be dark horses.
That’s why Su Xi saying they could make it to the Finals was already a huge compliment.
This also shut the Los Angeles reporters up. They certainly weren’t going to ask for trouble by questioning, "Why not the championship?"
Su Xi would undoubtedly point to the scoreboard above and say, "Didn’t it already give you the answer?"
...
The next morning, the Kobes hosted a lunch for Su Xi, Jessica Alba, and Megan Fox. Yao Ming attended as well.
For the most part, they talked about basketball.
However, Vanessa was a very meticulous person. When she saw Jessica straightening Su Xi’s clothes while Fox forked a piece of beef for him, she felt a tremor of shock.
A woman’s mind is a delicate thing; she realized she had just stumbled upon something extraordinary.
This was especially true when, in the underground parking garage, she saw both of them arm-in-arm with Su Xi, one on each side.
She was stunned. On the way back, she kept telling Kobe, "Hey, you need to stay far away from Jack."
"Huh?" Kobe was a little confused.
"Haven’t you figured it out yet?" Vanessa said. "Jack has two sexy Hollywood starlets at the same time—Jessica and Scarlett."
Kobe was astonished. "That’s impossible, right? They’re both world-famous movie stars. Why would they both choose Jack at the same time? It just doesn’t make any sense."
But Vanessa was certain. "Trust me," she said, "Jack is clearly anything but conventional. You can’t get too close to him. He managed to land two movie stars at the same time. If you learned his skills, you’d end up trying to manage seven or eight at home, wouldn’t you?"
"The only thing in my heart is basketball!"
"It’s in Jack’s heart too, but he also has a left atrium, a left ventricle, a right atrium, and a right ventricle!!"
"I’m not like him. I love basketball more than he does, you know that."
"Then why were we the ones who paid the bill today?"
"Er..."
Kobe suddenly felt miserable.
He hadn’t defeated Su Xi on the court, and now he’d been dealt a heavy blow off it as well.
Worst of all, he was powerless to retaliate.
That night, the Knicks defeated the Los Angeles Clippers in the same arena. There was no suspense about the outcome.
The Knicks’ run-and-gun offense was ferocious, with a blistering pace and rhythm, and Su Xi began to pile on the points. Whenever the team settled into a half-court offense, he relentlessly attacked with his superior strength. His scoring was like a torrential downpour that the Clippers were utterly unable to withstand.
Su Xi dropped another 41 points.
Back-to-back 40-plus-point games to open the season.
This forced people to take the bold declaration Su Xi had made seriously.
With Su Xi going for the scoring title, who would be impacted the most?
Anyone with even a passing knowledge of NBA history knew the answer: Michael Jordan.
Jordan was a ten-time scoring champion and was considered to be at the absolute pinnacle of the sport in that regard. Even when Kobe won the scoring title last season with a phenomenal average of 36 points per game, people only thought he was approaching Jordan’s level. No one believed he could ever surpass him.
