Adrian arrived at Calder House before seven the next morning.

He had barely slept.

Not because he was worried.

Because for the first time since the System had appeared in his life, he had something he wanted to build simply because he wanted to see whether it could be built.

The distinction mattered.

For months, every major decision had been connected to money, inheritance, old companies, political pressure, or someone else’s unfinished work. Even Helios had begun as an attempt to understand what Thomas Sterling had been trying to accomplish decades earlier.

The S-71-04 was different.

It was a starting point.

A machine that had existed as an engineering prototype in 1971, had been abandoned in a warehouse, and had somehow survived long enough to end up in Adrian’s possession.

It wasn’t impressive by modern standards.

Not yet.

But Adrian had spent half the night looking through the photographs Daniel had sent him.

The machine had one characteristic that kept pulling him back.

It worked.

For only a few seconds at a time.

"You look terrible," she said.

Miriam lowered her tablet.

"Then what exactly are you excited about?"

Adrian walked closer to the machine.

"That someone solved the first problem."

Miriam studied him for a moment.

Then she smiled.

"That’s annoyingly reasonable."

The S-71-04 sat inside a transparent protective enclosure.

It wasn’t large.

About the size of a domestic washing machine, although the comparison ended there.

Its outer casing had been removed during inspection, revealing a dense arrangement of copper windings, ceramic insulation, mechanical supports and control components.

At the centre was the assembly that mattered.

A small metallic platform suspended within a ring of electromagnetic coils.

When Adrian had first seen the photographs, he had expected something more dramatic.

Instead, the machine looked almost disappointingly ordinary.

That was what made it interesting.

Great engineering rarely announced itself.

Sometimes it looked like a collection of wires, brackets and ugly metal boxes.

"What happens when you turn it on?" Adrian asked.

"We don’t," Miriam said.

He looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because we don’t know what the insulation will do under load."

"Have you tested it?"

"We’ve tested individual components."

"Not the whole thing."

"Correct."

Adrian nodded.

"Then test it."

Miriam stared at him.

"Properly?"

"Obviously."

"That could take weeks."

"Then take weeks."

She gave him a long look.

"You’ve changed."

Adrian smiled slightly.

"How?"

"Six months ago, you’d have asked how much it would cost."

"And now?"

"Now you ask how long it takes."

He looked at the prototype again.

"Money isn’t the problem anymore."

Miriam’s expression became serious.

"That’s exactly why it can become one."

Adrian turned toward her.

She continued.

"If you start throwing money at engineering problems, people stop telling you when something can’t be done."

That landed.

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Then make sure they tell me."

"I will."

"Good."

The door opened.

Daniel walked in carrying a folder.

"You’re both here early."

Miriam looked at him.

"Apparently our employer has decided to become an engineer."

Daniel smiled.

"He’s worse."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"How bad?"

"He called me at two in the morning."

"I didn’t."

"You sent six messages."

"That isn’t calling."

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

"At two in the morning, it counts."

"These are the companies connected to the twelve million."

"Most of them," Daniel said.

"Most?"

He looked up.

"When?"

"1972."

Miriam moved closer.

Daniel continued.

"After the S-71-04 prototype."

Adrian turned the page.

There were twenty-three procurement orders.

Copper.

Ceramic insulation.

Precision bearings.

Specialised alloys.

Control relays.

Measurement equipment.

Nothing unusual individually.

Together, they painted a different picture.

"Thomas was sourcing everything," Adrian said.

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

"How long?"

"Three years."

Adrian kept reading.

The final page contained a handwritten note.

The prototype is not the product. The manufacturing capability is the product.

Adrian stopped.

He read it again.

Miriam noticed.

"What?"

He handed her the page.

She read the sentence.

Then looked at Adrian.

"That’s what you’ve been saying."

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

Daniel leaned against the table.

"There’s more."

Adrian looked at him.

"Of course there is."

Daniel smiled.

"I found the original engineering team."

That got Adrian’s attention.

"Alive?"

"Two of them."

"Where?"

"One in Manchester. One in Stuttgart."

"How old?"

"Both in their eighties."

Adrian closed the folder.

"Arrange meetings."

Daniel nodded.

"Already started."

"Good."

Miriam returned to the prototype.

"If we’re going to rebuild this, I want authority over the engineering process."

"You have it."

"I want to reject suppliers."

"Do it."

"I want to shut down tests if something looks unsafe."

"Obviously."

"And I don’t want anyone from your investment team telling my engineers that we’re behind schedule."

Adrian smiled.

"Consider them banned."

Miriam nodded.

"Then we can work."

By midday, Calder’s engineering floor had changed.

Technicians moved around the prototype.

Sensors were installed.

The enclosure was reinforced.

A new control computer was connected to the old electromagnetic assembly through a temporary interface.

It was strange to watch.

Half the machine belonged in a museum.

The other half looked like it had been designed yesterday.

Adrian stood behind the safety glass while Miriam supervised the first low-power test.

Daniel stood beside him.

"Do you know what happens if this works?" Daniel asked.

"Yes."

"What?"

"We build another one."

Daniel laughed.

"That’s it?"

"That’s it."

"No billion-pound announcement?"

"No."

"No press conference?"

"No."

"No government meeting?"

"Not until we have something worth showing."

"Fair."

Inside the chamber, Miriam raised a hand.

The room became quiet.

"Power."

The machine came alive.

A low hum filled the room.

Vibration.

The central assembly shifted.

Then stopped.

Miriam watched the readings.

"Increase to twelve percent."

The technicians adjusted the control.

The hum deepened.

The suspended platform moved upward by less than a centimetre.

Miriam looked at him through the glass.

"That’s my call."

He smiled.

"Fair enough."

She waited.

Then nodded.

Then one number turned red.

"Stop."

The platform descended onto its support.

Silence returned.

Adrian looked at Miriam.

"What happened?"

"How bad?"

"Not dangerous at this level."

"Can it be fixed?"

Miriam looked through the glass at the machine.

"Yes."

"How?"

"Better insulation. Better cooling. Better control."

"How much?"

She smiled.

"You promised not to ask."

Adrian laughed.

"Right."

Miriam removed her headset.

"There’s another problem."

"What?"

"The original machine is fighting us."

"Meaning?"

"The electromagnetic geometry works, but the control response is too slow."

"How slow?"

"Milliseconds."

Adrian waited.

"That’s bad?"

"For this application, yes."

"Can modern processors fix it?"

"Partly."

"Do it."

She looked at him.

"You really are serious."

"I told you."

"You know we’re probably going to destroy half this machine before we understand it."

"Then build a better half."

Miriam laughed.

"That’s an expensive philosophy."

"We can afford it."

At three in the afternoon, Adrian received a call from Robert.

"Northbridge is officially ours," Robert said.

Adrian looked out through the window of his office.

"Good."

"The final documents were signed forty minutes ago."

"Any resistance?"

"Meridian tried one last move."

Adrian’s expression changed.

"What did they offer?"

"£290 million."

Adrian was quiet for a moment.

"And Northbridge still accepted our deal?"

"They did."

"Why?"

Robert hesitated.

"Because we offered them something Meridian didn’t."

"What?"

"Continuity."

Adrian smiled.

That word had become more important than money.

"What did Meridian want?"

"Control."

"And we offered?"

"Resources without dismantling the company."

Adrian nodded.

"Keep it that way."

Robert paused.

"There’s one more thing."

"Go on."

"Meridian has started approaching two of Northbridge’s largest suppliers."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

"Which ones?"

Robert gave him the names.

Adrian immediately recognised one.

Atlantic Industrial Materials.

The other was a smaller German supplier.

"That’s not competition," Adrian said.

"No."

"It’s a supply-chain attack."

"That’s what I thought."

Adrian walked back toward his desk.

"Then we stop reacting."

"What do you mean?"

"We’ve been buying companies because they have useful capabilities."

"Yes."

"Now we’re going to build the capabilities ourselves."

Robert was silent.

"How?"

"Vertical integration."

"Adrian—"

"We’re not going to spend the next five years worrying about who Meridian buys."

He sat down.

"We’re going to make sure nobody can put us under pressure by controlling one supplier."

Robert understood.

"You want to own the critical chain."

"I want to manufacture it."

"That’s significantly more expensive."

"I know."

"And slower."

"I know."

Robert laughed quietly.

"You’ve definitely changed."

Adrian smiled.

"Apparently everyone keeps saying that."

That evening, Adrian met Sophia at a small private dining room overlooking the Thames.

It wasn’t a formal business dinner.

No investors.

No lawyers.

No advisers.

Just dinner.

Sophia arrived ten minutes late.

"You look pleased with yourself," she said.

"I bought a company."

"You’ve bought several."

"This one feels different."

She sat opposite him.

"Why?"

"Because I think I finally understand what I’m supposed to be doing."

"Building."

They both laughed.

The conversation moved on.

Music.

The absurdity of expensive restaurants.

Adrian told her about Daniel’s two-in-the-morning messages.

At some point, Sophia looked at him across the table.

"You seem happier."

Adrian paused.

"Do I?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you’re not talking about what someone left you."

He considered that.

She continued.

"You’re talking about what you’re going to make."

Adrian smiled.

"I think you’re right."

Sophia lifted her glass.

"Then don’t lose that."

He raised his own.

"I won’t."

At 11:58 p.m., Adrian stood alone in his office.

The city stretched beyond the windows.

Calder House was quiet.

The engineering floor below had finally gone dark.

The S-71-04 remained inside its enclosure, waiting for the next round of testing.

Adrian checked the time.

11:58.

The familiar System interface appeared.

The notification disappeared.

A moment later, his phone vibrated.

The transfer had arrived.

Twelve million pounds.

Adrian looked at the balance.

Then he looked through the glass toward the dark engineering floor.

The money wasn’t the exciting part.

Not anymore.

He opened his laptop.

A blank document appeared.

At the top, he typed:

He stopped.

Then added another line.

Phase One: Electromagnetic Manufacturing Platform

He leaned back.

Tomorrow, they would dismantle the old prototype.

They would test every component.

They would redesign the weak points.

They would manufacture new versions.

And if the machine failed, they would build another.

Because Adrian finally understood something Thomas Sterling had learned too late.

The breakthrough wasn’t the machine.

It was the ability to build the machine whenever you needed one.
