"Yes?"

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"What kind?"

"Explain."

"The machine ran for twenty-three minutes."

Adrian stopped walking.

"Twenty-three?"

"Yes."

"Two days ago we couldn’t reach ten."

"We changed the cooling architecture."

"How?"

"Liquid cooling around the primary coil assembly."

"That’s what caused the improvement?"

"Partly."

"What else?"

Miriam hesitated.

"We changed the control algorithm."

Adrian smiled.

"How much?"

"Enough that I don’t want to discuss it over the phone."

"On my way."

They had collectively received acquisition approaches.

All from companies connected to Meridian.

"They want a contract."

Daniel nodded.

"Long-term."

"How long?"

"Fifteen years."

Adrian looked at the figures.

That was substantial.

Very substantial.

"What do they want in return?"

"Capital."

"How much?"

"£600 million."

Adrian looked back at the document.

"That’s not a supply agreement."

"No."

"It’s financing."

"Exactly."

Adrian walked to the window.

Meridian had made the first move.

Daniel understood.

"And if the company disappears into Meridian?"

"We build the capability ourselves."

Daniel laughed.

"You’re really serious about this manufacturing thing."

Adrian looked at the unfinished factory floor.

"Daniel, I’m serious about everything now."

He ended the call.

Outside, the first lights of morning were beginning to appear beyond the city.

The factory was still unfinished.

The machine was still experimental.

The supply network was still fragile.

Meridian was getting more aggressive.

And Adrian had just made a decision that would cost him money in the short term.

He didn’t care.

For the first time, he wasn’t trying to become independent by owning everything around him.

He was becoming independent by making himself impossible to stop.
