Chapter 88: The Product Decision
By eight the next morning, Adrian had already approved the first £90 million manufacturing expansion.
The money was not the difficult part. The difficult part was deciding what they were actually building.
He stood at the end of the conference table at Sterling Industrial Works while Daniel displayed the latest manufacturing map on the wall. The factory had changed noticeably in less than two weeks. Temporary offices had been replaced by permanent workstations, additional machining equipment had arrived overnight, and construction crews were extending the eastern production hall, the sound of drilling audible even through the reinforced glass.
Miriam entered carrying a folder.
"I have good news."
"You sound like someone about to give me expensive news," Adrian said.
"It is expensive."
Daniel smiled without looking up from his tablet.
Miriam ignored him and placed the folder on the table. "The electromagnetic platform is reproducible. We’ve confirmed the current architecture can be manufactured repeatedly rather than only assembled successfully once, which is a different thing entirely."
"How many?"
"Three complete units using the revised process. All three reached fifty percent operating capacity without structural failure."
Adrian nodded, then caught the pause before her next sentence.
"There’s a problem," she added.
"There always is."
"The machines are too large, too expensive, and too specialised."
He glanced at the drawings spread across the table. "What does that mean commercially?"
"It means nobody’s going to buy one just because it’s technically impressive."
That answer interested him more than another successful test result would have.
"Then we’re asking the wrong question."
Miriam folded her arms. "What’s the right one?"
"What can we build with it that people actually need?"
The room went quiet for a moment. Daniel looked toward the manufacturing map on the wall.
"That’s where things get interesting," he said.
Adrian sat down. "Show me."
Daniel changed the display. The industrial map disappeared, replaced by a list of possible applications — power systems, industrial motors, precision manufacturing, transport, energy storage, medical equipment, defence, automotive.
Adrian studied the list.
"Remove defence."
"Why?" Daniel asked, genuinely surprised.
"Because we’re not building a weapons company."
Miriam nodded slowly, something like relief passing over her face.
"What about medical?" Daniel asked.
"Later. Certification takes years, and I don’t want our first commercial product trapped inside a regulatory pipeline before we’ve proven the business exists."
Daniel removed it from the list. "Energy storage?"
"Too early."
"Industrial motors?"
"Potentially."
"Transport?"
Adrian leaned back in his chair. "That’s interesting."
Daniel enlarged the section. A simple rendering appeared — electric drive system, high-efficiency motor, thermal management, power electronics, compact electromagnetic control architecture layered around a central housing.
Adrian stared at it for several seconds.
"What would happen if we built the entire drive system ourselves?"
"Depends what you mean by entire," Miriam said.
"Motor, controller, cooling, power electronics. Everything."
"Then we stop being a component company."
"Exactly."
Daniel looked at him carefully. "You want to build a vehicle."
"Eventually."
Miriam shook her head. "We’re nowhere near that."
"I didn’t say tomorrow."
"You’ve got a factory that’s just barely learned to manufacture one electromagnetic platform consistently, and you’re already thinking about cars."
"Not cars." He pointed at the screen. "A powertrain."
She studied him for a moment. "That’s worse."
"Why?"
"Because now you’re going to want to build everything around it."
"I already do."
Daniel laughed. Miriam sighed and rubbed her temple.
"At least let us finish the machine first."
"We’ll finish it," Adrian said, standing. "And then we’re going to find out what it can actually do."

The first serious test began just after eleven.
The new production unit sat inside a reinforced testing chamber at the far end of the factory. Unlike the original prototype, this version had been designed with manufacturing in mind from the outset — a deliberate difference, and an important one. The original machine had been built by engineers who understood exactly what they were doing, with equipment that could be adjusted by hand until everything worked. The new units had to be built by technicians following a repeatable process, which was the difference between an invention and a company.
Adrian watched through the observation window as the technicians completed their final checks.
Miriam stood beside him. "You understand the machine doesn’t make energy."
"I know."
"It doesn’t violate physics."
"I know."
"It doesn’t magically eliminate losses."
He looked at her sideways. "Do you have a point?"
"People hear billionaire, secret laboratory, mysterious electromagnetic machine, and start imagining perpetual motion. I’d rather we get ahead of that."
"We’re not selling miracles."
"Good."
"We’re selling efficiency."
"Potentially."
"You’re very committed to that word."
"I’m an engineer," she said. "’Potentially’ is one of our favourite words. It keeps us out of court."
The test began. Power rose gradually. The machine stabilised. Temperature held within limits. At thirty percent, the control system adjusted itself automatically. At forty, the cooling system responded without prompting. At fifty, the readings held steady.
"Hold it there," Miriam said.
The technicians waited. Five minutes passed. Ten. Twenty. Nothing drifted outside the expected parameters.
She finally allowed herself a small smile. "That’s the first production-representative unit."
Adrian didn’t celebrate. "How much does it cost?"
Her smile disappeared. "About £2.8 million."
Daniel whistled softly from the corner.
"Too much," Adrian said.
"For a prototype?"
"Yes."
"We can reduce it."
"To?"
She hesitated. "If we standardise the housing, automate some assembly, and redesign the cooling system properly — perhaps six to eight hundred thousand."
"Still too expensive for mass production," Adrian said, glancing at Daniel.
"But not necessarily for industrial applications," Daniel said.
"Correct." Adrian looked back through the glass at the machine, still humming steadily. "That’s our first product."
Miriam frowned. "I thought the car was the product."
"The car comes later." He nodded at the machine. "This is what pays for the car."

By two in the afternoon, Robert had joined them.
He listened while Adrian laid out the plan. "You’re creating an industrial technology company before creating a consumer technology company."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Industrial customers pay for performance. And they don’t need a million units."
Robert considered that. Daniel opened another document on the shared screen. "Potential customers include industrial robotics manufacturers, precision machining companies, high-load electric motor manufacturers, and a handful of energy infrastructure firms."
"How many have we approached?"
"None."
"Good," Adrian said.
Robert raised an eyebrow. "Good?"
"I don’t want salespeople promising a product before we’ve finished defining what it is."
"That will save us some embarrassment," Miriam said.
"Build a small commercial team," Adrian told Daniel. "Technical sales, not the usual kind."
"How small?"
"Six people. For now."
Daniel made a note. Robert leaned forward. "And pricing?"
Adrian looked at Miriam. "What performance improvement can we actually guarantee?"
"We don’t have enough field data yet."
"Then we don’t guarantee anything."
"That’s unusually cautious," Robert said, with something like approval.
"I’m not selling dreams." Adrian looked around the table. "We give industrial customers a machine, let them test it under controlled conditions, and charge for access to the technology while we collect real performance data."
"Leasing," Daniel said.
"Initially."
Robert understood immediately. "That lets us retain ownership of the hardware."
"And collect the data."
"And improve every generation before it ever leaves the building."
"Exactly."
Miriam crossed her arms. "You’re turning engineering development into a subscription model."
"Not a subscription." Adrian allowed himself a small smile. "An industrial service."
"That’s still a subscription," Robert said, laughing.
"Then don’t call it that."

The first company arrived three days later.
A German precision-manufacturing group sent two engineers and a commercial director to inspect the system. They expected a presentation. Adrian gave them a factory tour instead — the machining cells first, then the cooling systems, then the control electronics, and finally the laboratory itself.
The visitors stopped when they saw the machine.
The commercial director stared at it. "How much?"
"You haven’t tested it," Adrian said.
"I know."
"Then why ask?"
"Because if it works the way your engineers claim, price becomes the second question."
"And the first?"
"Availability."
Adrian liked him immediately.
The engineers spent nearly two hours asking technical questions. Miriam fielded most of them. Adrian said very little, watching the way they interacted with the machine rather than with him.
When they finally left, the commercial director stayed behind.
"You want us to become a customer," he said.
"I want you to become a test partner."
"What’s the difference?"
"Customers buy finished products." Adrian nodded toward the laboratory. "You’d be helping us finish this one."
"That sounds like work."
"It is."
"Why would we do it?"
"Early access. Preferential pricing on future units. Influence over the next generation of the design."
"And if it fails?"
"You stop. No obligation beyond that."
The man smiled slightly. "That’s unusually reasonable."
"I’m trying to build a company that survives," Adrian said. "Reasonable tends to help with that."

That evening, Sophia arrived at Calder House carrying a paper bag.
Adrian looked at it, then at her, still working out where he’d left the last conversation they’d had — something brief, a few weeks ago, at a dinner Daniel had organised for a handful of people connected to the Cambridge battery researchers. She’d been sharp and slightly amused by everything, and he’d meant to follow up and, characteristically, hadn’t.
"What is that?" he asked.
"Dinner. Daniel mentioned you’d been working sixteen-hour days and forgetting to eat properly, and I happened to be in the area." She said it lightly, the way someone tested a joke to see whether it landed before committing to it.
"I have staff for that."
"I’m sure your staff would rather not argue with you about it."
He looked at the bag again, genuinely uncertain what to do with the moment. "What did you bring?"
"Something normal. I wasn’t sure what counted as normal for someone in your position, so I guessed."
"That’s a reasonable guess."
They ended up in the smaller dining room rather than anywhere formal, which felt like the only sensible choice given neither of them had planned this properly. Sophia listened, with the polite attentiveness of someone still working out how much of what she was hearing was real, while Adrian explained the industrial strategy in more detail than he’d probably intended to.
"So you’re building a car company," she said finally.
"No."
She gave him a look. "You’re building an electromagnetic power platform, a manufacturing network, a cooling partnership, an industrial factory, and now you’re talking about automotive drive systems."
"I’m not building a car company."
"Yet."
He laughed, and it surprised him slightly how easily it came, given how little he actually knew about her.
"You know what I find interesting?" she said, picking up her glass.
"What?"
"You don’t talk about money when you talk about the factory."
"Money matters."
"Obviously. But it’s not the interesting part to you."
He thought about the factory floor, the machines, the engineers, the prototype running behind reinforced glass at that very moment. "Making something that didn’t exist before."
"That’s the first genuinely sensible answer you’ve given me tonight," she said.
"I’ve given several sensible answers."
"Name one."
"I let you bring dinner."
She laughed, and for a moment the conversation eased into something less deliberate — no companies, no Meridian, no old documents from an estate she knew nothing about. Just two people who barely knew each other, eating in a quiet room, feeling their way toward whether this was worth continuing.
Then she looked at him with the particular curiosity of someone testing an idea rather than making a claim.
"When are you going to build something ordinary?"
"Ordinary?"
"A phone."
He laughed. "Why a phone?"
"Because everyone already uses one. You keep talking about things that need factories and industrial customers and engineers with twenty years of experience. Build something people can actually hold."
Adrian went quiet for a moment.
A phone. The idea wasn’t new — he’d turned it over himself in the back of his mind more than once. That was precisely why it caught his attention now, arriving from someone outside the company who had no stake in the answer.
A product didn’t need to be revolutionary to change a company. It needed to be better. Considerably better.
"We could do that," he said.
"I had a feeling you’d say that." She smiled, though there was a slight edge of surprise in it too — as if she hadn’t fully expected the suggestion to land anywhere.
"You planted the idea deliberately."
"Maybe a little."
He reached for his phone.
"Daniel."
"You’re calling him during dinner?"
"Yes."
"That’s a little hopeless, honestly."
"Probably," he admitted, and dialled anyway.
Daniel answered after two rings. "What’s happened?"
"I want a consumer electronics team."
A pause. "Tonight?"
"Start recruiting tomorrow."
"What are we building?"
Adrian glanced at Sophia, who was watching him with an expression somewhere between amusement and mild disbelief that she’d apparently just started a division of his company over dinner.
"A phone."
Daniel sighed audibly down the line. "Of course."

At 11:57 that night, Adrian returned to his study.
The day’s reports were waiting for him. The German manufacturer wanted a formal testing agreement drafted by the end of the week. The cooling partnership had approved its first joint development budget. Sterling Industrial Works had reduced the projected cost of the electromagnetic platform by eight percent through the standardisation work Miriam’s team had proposed that morning. The factory expansion remained ahead of schedule. And Daniel had already identified three potential senior engineers for a consumer electronics division that hadn’t existed twelve hours earlier.
Adrian looked at the list and allowed himself a small, private smile.
The empire was beginning to develop two distinct speeds. Industrial technology would move carefully, because reliability mattered more than momentum in that world. Consumer technology would move quickly, because markets changed faster than factories could be built. He would need both, running in parallel, without letting either one slow the other down.
At exactly midnight, the System appeared.
SYSTEM CHECK-IN — DAY 88. REWARD AVAILABLE: £30,000,000 LIQUID CAPITAL. ACCEPT?
He accepted. The money appeared in the account without ceremony, and he barely registered it before opening Daniel’s follow-up message.
Preliminary recruitment list ready. Also found an engineering team from Cambridge working on compact battery systems — might be worth meeting.
He typed back: Set it up.
Then he set the phone down and sat for a moment in the quiet of the study.
For months, the System had given him money above almost everything else. He was finally reaching the point where money was no longer the most valuable thing it offered him.
Freedom was. The freedom to build. The freedom to hire the people he needed without waiting on anyone’s approval. The freedom to take an offhand suggestion over an unplanned dinner and turn it into a division of the company before sunrise.
He looked out at the city beyond the glass.
The factory was only the beginning.
Tomorrow, he would start building the phone.
