The sky was gloomy, pressing down on people so they could hardly breathe.
The usual moistness of Jiangnan’s water towns had at this moment condensed into a heavy chill.
By the river, there was an old two-story tavern. It was aged, with a faded sign above the door that could barely reveal the words "Drunken Immortal Tower."
In the elegant private room on the second floor near the window, the window was only slightly ajar.
A few men in gray short jackets with sharp eyes sat around a table.
On the table were a few plates of salted edamame, fennel beans, and a pot of warm rice wine.
The wine remained almost untouched as their eyes stared intently across the river at a large mansion with high walls.
The mansion’s gate was imposing, its white walls were tall, and it belonged to the town’s well-known Zhou Dahu Family.
"Old Fourth, are... are you sure?"
A scar-faced man lowered his voice, brimming with excitement.
His name was Liu San, and he was the leader of this group.
The one being asked was a man with a long, thin face and high cheekbones, named Chen the Fourth.
He withdrew his gaze, lifted a rough porcelain wine cup for a sip, then quickly put it down, his eyes sharp as he said, "No mistake! Third Brother, I’ve run my legs off. In the months that Zhou Family’s concubine has been pregnant, I’ve combed through all the strange events within a hundred miles."
He counted on his fingers, his voice lower, "In East Village, the sows of Zhang the Butcher gave birth to a litter of twelve piglets, each with a bit of golden hair on their foreheads; a mass of colorful clouds rose from the direction of the Chaotic Burial Mound outside town at midnight, lingering for a full hour before dissipating... each and every one of them points to the ancient records of the ’Birth of a prodigy, heralded by mystical signs’!"
Another short and stout man, named Wang Wu, couldn’t help but whistle, rubbing his hands, "Wow! A group of reincarnated immortals... Even though they’ve all lost their past memories, they’re confused and unaware, but the talent, tsk tsk..."
"I heard that those large sects found them. After just a few months of enlightenment, their progress in cultivation was faster than our ten years of hard work! If our Five Yang Sect could get hold of one, train them well, that would be a future pillar, the foundation for establishing a Sect!"
As they spoke, it was as if they already saw the Five Yang Sect flourishing in their generation’s hands.
Liu San’s eyes flashed with a sharp light, just as he was about to speak, his face suddenly twitched.
Through the window slit, he stared intently at a narrow alleyway diagonal to the Zhou Family estate.
There, without knowing when, a few figures also appeared.
They were dressed similarly, unremarkable, with an air of sinister vigilance.
At the front, one had a bulging waist, seemingly carrying something.
"Damn!"
Wang Wu also saw it, cursed under his breath, his face turning ashen, "It’s those ’Black Water Sect’ bastards! They caught scent as well?"
Liu San’s fist clenched tightly under the table, knuckles turning white.
Competition, competition everywhere!
Since that earth-shattering battle in the east, the entire Divine State seemed like a rice bag that had been torn open, the "Immortal Gods" that once stood high above, existing only in legends and temples, scattered into the Human World like grains caught in a whirlwind.
The consequence of the forcibly torn Daluo Law Realm was that numerous Divine Souls, losing their basis and greatly diminishing in power, surged into the mundane world like rootless duckweed.
The Mystic Sect Sect was initially on high alert as if facing a great enemy.
But soon, they discovered it wasn’t that simple.
The number of "Immortal Gods" pouring down was just too many!
Moreover, the majority of Divine Souls had already exhausted their power before forcibly passing through the rift in the Dharma Realm, becoming extremely weakened.
Even more crucially, this world itself was repelling these "foreign objects."
The vast majority of Divine Souls made the most instinctual and helpless choice—reincarnate.
Abandoning the past, merging into the Human World, hoping to grow anew from ignorance, perhaps in the future regain a trace of True Spirit and tread the path of the Immortal Gods once more.
Of course, there were exceptions.
Some inherently strong or deeply obsessive beings, unwilling to start over, chose a more direct and perilous path—Body Seizing!
Forcibly occupying a living body, seizing the nest.
Also, some Mortal Gods, who still had roots in the Human World and were worshipped through incense, took the opportunity to nestle into their Divine Statue bodies, trying to survive on the remaining Incense Fire Wish Power, even hoping to restore their power.
This led to the disruption of the originally peaceful incense landscape in many places.
To vie for followers and incense, various sects clashed continuously, with undercurrents surging.
"Damn it, we can’t let the Black Water Sect snatch the duck that’s already in our mouths!"
Chen the Fourth’s eyes flashed with a trace of ruthlessness, "Tonight, we act! Before that concubine gives birth, let’s light the ’Soul Summoning Lamp’! Get the upper hand!"
...
The night was like thick ink, enveloping Wuzhen entirely.
The sound of the canal almost vanished, leaving only the whimpering wind passing by the eaves.
The Zhou Family’s mansion was pitch-black, like a slumbering giant beast.
Shortly past midnight, two cold auras appeared nearly simultaneously in the shadows outside the Zhou Family’s high walls.
On one side were Liu San, Chen the Fourth, and Wang Wu.
They worked swiftly, clearing a small piece of ground next to the wall.
Chen the Fourth carefully took out a palm-sized yellow clay incense burner from his bosom and set it upright. He also took out three long, thin black incense sticks, lit them, and inserted them.
The incense tips flared up with three faint green sparks, the smoke curling up, not dispersing, but instead clinging to the wall’s edge, creeping upward with an indescribable eeriness.
Liu San bit through his fingertip and swiftly drew twisted talismans on a coarse Yellow Paper while chanting under his breath. Wang Wu vigilantly looked around, holding a short-handled cleaver polished shining betwixt his grip.
On the other side, in the alleyway shadows, the four from Black Water Sect moved as well.
They worked faster, directly setting up several crooked little straw men at the foot of the wall.
The straw men had red paper with the Four Pillars of Destiny written on them, pasted on their bodies.
