Chapter 236

Episode 60 - Fallen leaves [1]

"Our relationship at first was purely business: you help me, and I help you. But before that, I intended to kill you. Then I changed my mind because you turned out to be different from what I thought."
Adel tilted his head, slightly confused.
"Different in what way?"
"I thought you might become a villain in the future, and because of how quickly you were growing, that suspicion only grew stronger. But then I secretly observed you. I saw you being kind, helping the elderly and children, and doing good deeds even when you ended up seriously injured."
"So I changed the way I saw you. Then I slowly grew closer to you, and when we faced a situation where we needed to join forces, our relationship changed from business to camaraderie. After our second year at the Academy, we became friends."
Adel listened carefully to every word she said.
He nodded from time to time while, at the same time, reviewing the kind of personality he had.
Indeed, Adel was kind when others were kind to him.
He never showed kindness to just anyone.
He helped others because he could and had the resources and strength to do so.
He had been doing so alongside Rinna for several months.
’That’s really surprising.’
Discovering that a version of himself had existed in Lumina’s previous regression only left him with more questions.
Because he wanted to know what that version of himself had done and how he had ended up dying.
He really had died after all.
Every answer concerning his survival was right in front of him.
"...There was also your relationship with the others, especially the girls..."
For a second, Lumina stopped. Adel sensed a strange resistance coming from her.
’I guess she has the ability to resist mental control, doesn’t she?’
"Continue."
Lumina continued.
"Your relationship with the girls, such as Rinna, Charlotte, Diana, and Clementine, grew stronger in a short amount of time."
"Mhm, in what way?"
Adel was somewhat confused. Why would he have a better relationship with only the girls?
Honestly, he had no idea.
"First, Rinna had feelings for you. Although she hid them, they were far too obvious. You were the only one who didn’t notice..."
"....!?"
"W-what...?!"
Adel staggered backward as Lumina’s words slowly sank into his mind.
’Rinna... had feelings for me...’
His mind went blank, but before he could organize his thoughts, Lumina continued.
"Charlotte, on the other hand, I think she started developing feelings for you when you entered the Fallen Maiden’s Memory Gate. All I know is that, at first, they were more like conflicting emotions, but when the two of you were completely alone again, she quickly began showing her feelings."
"...."
"Diana developed feelings for you, perhaps because she had always lived alone and you were her first friend in life. However, she started developing feelings for you after you saved her from what her father was going to do to her. From then on, she tried to avoid you because she was embarrassed."
"Finally, Clementine..."
Before Lumina could continue speaking, Adel covered her mouth with the palm of his hand.
His mind had become a complete mess. For the first time, he couldn’t process what Lumina had just told him.
Because, honestly, Adel had never expected Rinna, Charlotte, and the others to fall in love with him in the future.
Adel’s face had turned slightly red. For the first time in a long while, the emotion of embarrassment surged through him with overwhelming intensity.
And his heart was beating rapidly.
’T-thank goodness my master isn’t listening to this conversation.’
Otherwise, he had no idea how unbearable his master might become from now on.
"L-let’s change the subject."
Adel removed his hand from Lumina’s mouth. She nodded after hearing his order.
Adel took a deep breath as he calmed his mind. Honestly, he didn’t know what to say about it.
So he decided to put those thoughts aside for now and focus on what he really wanted to know.
"Next question: how different am I compared to your previous regression?"
This was the second question that occupied his mind the most.
He wanted to know whether there were small or major differences between himself and his other self.
Or perhaps they were simply completely identical and had followed the same path.
"There are major differences."
Upon hearing Lumina’s words, Adel couldn’t help but be surprised.
"Originally, you were supposed to go through a series of events in which your life would be in danger. However, none of that has happened so far. Based on my observations of you over the past few months, you’ve only gone through three moments where your life was truly in danger."
Adel could guess which ones they were.
The first was what happened at the Hunting Festival, in the Golden Forest.
The second was in Chapter Two, in Black City.
And finally, it was when he fought the Apostle Kaiser.
Although Adel didn’t know how Lumina knew what had happened to him in Black City.
Because, as far as he remembered, Lumina hadn’t been there at any point.
"And another major change is what is happening right now. Originally, you were never supposed to awaken the Divine Body, but now that’s different. Of course, I hadn’t awakened the Divine Body in my previous regression either."
Adel nodded slightly.
In reality, he knew that Lumina had never awakened the Divine Body in her previous regression thanks to his memories.
She had only awakened the Divine Body in her final regression, Regression #10,000.
"Next question. Did Veronica exist in your previous regression?"
"No, she never appeared. From the very beginning, I’ve been quite puzzled, because I believe she’s the one who caused your future, which was originally supposed to follow a series of events, to become different."
That definitely caught Adel’s attention.
"Then, do you think Veronica could be the one who changed my future?"
"Yes, most likely, since I haven’t interacted with you very often directly."
Adel fell silent as he thought about her words.
Apparently, Veronica had not existed in Lumina’s previous regression.
But Adel had.
Adel knew that Veronica had some kind of connection to him.
Veronica was the only person who knew everything about Adel, but due to certain restrictions, Veronica couldn’t tell him anything.
That raised a question.
’Why didn’t she exist in Regression #9999, but she does in this regression?’
For example, perhaps Regression #9999 was some kind of test to determine what Adel could do without Veronica’s existence.
Of course, it was only a hypothesis, and Adel would somehow have to ask Veronica and get the answer from her.
’But I suppose I could ask her after recovering my memories of all my past lives, right?’
The mission that had appeared when he advanced to Five Stars.
Completing that mission meant recovering his memories and, finally, discovering who he was.
"Next question. From what I’ve noticed, it seems like you want my future to change, right?"
"Yes, I want to change your future, not only to repay you for all the help you gave me in surviving my Day of Always Dying, but also so that you can survive."
"....."
Adel rubbed his temples.
That answer had actually answered his final question.
His final question was...
’Will I die in the future?’
But he had indirectly gotten his answer.
’So I’ll die in the end.’
He didn’t know exactly what the Adel from Regression #9999 had done, but that Adel had failed.
Adel didn’t know what his purpose would be after recovering his memories.
Right now, his ultimate goal was to survive his death a few years from now.
However, on the other hand, Lumina’s words...
’...She wants to repay me for helping her.’
Only then did Adel smile.
Ironically, he had never expected anything in return when helping others.
Because deep down, Adel only wanted to survive the day of his death, and because of that, he was willing to be selfish.
He would even kill anyone just to survive his death.
That included innocent people.
Certainly, that wasn’t any different from the actions of a villain, even though he wasn’t truly a villain who had abandoned his humanity.
"That’s why I want to change your future, and besides, you’re a very dear and special person to me."
"....."
Adel’s thoughts stopped for a second.
’A dear and special person.’
He had never expected to hear those words.
And without realizing it, he looked at Lumina’s emotions.
"..."
They were emotions that truly showed that her words meant exactly what she had said.
At that moment, for some reason, Adel’s heart began beating slightly faster without him even realizing it.
But suddenly...
’Oh, wait a second. If I existed in her previous regression, that means...’
A thought crossed his mind, and he immediately asked the question.
"By any chance, did I have a sister?"
"....."
Lumina’s emotions shifted into confusion.
"....."
That alone answered his question.
"No, as far as I know, you didn’t have a sister or even a blood relative."
"I see."
He nodded slightly. After asking Lumina all the questions he wanted to ask, he realized that quite a bit of time had passed.
’It’s getting late.’
The Atlas Seminar would begin in less than two hours, but they needed to arrive as soon as possible.
In any case, Adel had no more questions to ask Lumina.
—————
Author’s Note.
Well, it was about time Adel’s relationship with Lumina improved, and, of course, that he started developing feelings for Lumina and the other characters, even if only very, very slightly.
By the way, although the romance has barely progressed, in Part Two of this story, I’ll finally start showing the romance between Adel and the other characters.
For now, the romance will remain in the background.
