Creatures that had passed without noticing the lantern began turning toward them. Some possessed no eyes, yet their bodies shifted as the contract’s energy spread through the sea.
The chain did not produce light in the ordinary sense. It was an obligation made visible, a bond between two souls powerful enough to draw the attention of anything capable of feeding upon memory.
Rook fought them with one hand while clinging to the grave-rope with the other. He tore an arm from the creature wrapped around him and drove its hooked fingers through another predator’s mouth. His scythe vanished beneath the gathering mass of bodies before emerging through the side of a pale skull.
None of them died.
Rook could damage the creatures, tear them apart, and force them away, but he could not Cull them.
The mermaid reached Mara’s waist. One claw pierced her side while another scraped across her stomach, pulling the creature higher. Its mangled mouth opened beneath Mara’s chest, desperate to reach the face above it.
Mara struck the creature again, but the mermaid barely reacted. Its claws tightened, and another memory tore loose.
Mara saw the innkeeper carrying a bowl toward her table, only to forget his face before he reached it. She remembered a room filled with blue light and understood that she had once felt safe there, but she could no longer remember why.
The sea reached deeper.
Something old shifted inside her.
Mara felt a memory beginning to slip away before she could see what it contained. She did not know what she was losing. She only knew that it belonged to the life she had lived before arriving in the Underworld.
She tried to hold on to it.
The mermaid climbed higher, and one claw entered beneath Mara’s ribs. Panic crushed every other thought.
For an instant, she was back inside the memory fragment. Hooked limbs surrounded the cart. Teeth folded around her hands. A blade opened a stranger’s body while something dragged another person through the tall grass. Dozens of deaths pressed against one another inside Mara’s skull, each carrying pain sharp enough to become indistinguishable from her own.
Mara no longer knew which terror belonged to her.
The mermaid’s ruined face rose before her, its broken jaws opening as it pulled itself closer. Mara saw herself dying between them.
She would return somewhere in the Underworld with another memory gone. Perhaps she would remember jumping into the sea without knowing why. Perhaps Rook would become another faceless figure whose importance remained long after everything else had been stripped away.
The creature dragged itself closer.
Mara’s mind searched desperately through the deaths trapped inside her.
Not the cart.
Not the field.
Not the teeth.
Not the white room.
Something struck her chest.
Cold metal.
The sensation came without an image. Pressure entered through her heart, sinking deep enough for her body to understand the injury before the pain followed. For one terrible moment, something remained buried inside her.
A blade. A long curved knife made it all the way inside her chest.
Someone stood close enough for Mara to feel their breath. She could not see their face. Darkness covered it, or perhaps the memory had not returned clearly enough to provide one. She remembered looking down and seeing a hand wrapped around the weapon’s handle.
Then the blade was pulled free.
Cold spread through her chest, and her legs failed beneath her. The person who had stabbed her caught Mara before she could reach the ground.
Then the memory vanished.
Mara returned to the Silent Sea with the mermaid climbing toward her face. The place beneath her ribs had become cold.
Then hot.
Then empty.
Something inside that emptiness opened.
Light erupted from Mara’s body.
It did not resemble the pale chain of the contract or the blue flame burning inside the lantern. This light was white at its center and dark around the edges, as though it illuminated the shape of an absence rather than Mara herself.
The water recoiled from it.
Every creature surrounding them stopped.
Rook’s eyes widened, and his lips moved around a single word.
"Shit."
The awakening spread through the sea. Mara felt the pulse travel beyond the lantern’s reach, passing through the circling predators and descending into the depths below. Creatures fighting beneath the armored vessel turned toward her. Serpentine bodies changed direction, and distant mouths opened in the darkness.
The mermaid reacted first.
Its claws drove deeper into Mara as it lunged upward, broken jaws stretching toward her face.
Mara pressed one hand against the creature’s chest trying to push her away.
Something beneath her palm split open.
No weapon appeared between them, nor did anything enter the mermaid’s body from outside. A narrow wound simply formed beneath Mara’s hand and drove through the creature’s torso. Pale flesh parted around the passage of an invisible blade. Bone opened beneath it, revealing a mass of dark smoke trapped inside the mermaid.
Faces moved within that mass.
Dozens of them.
Some screamed while others stared through Mara with expressions emptied by terror. Hands pressed against the edges of the wound from within, leaving impressions in the smoke as though the stolen memories had realized there was finally a way out.
The invisible blade continued through them.
A second wound opened within the mass of memories.
The mermaid became still.
Its remaining turquoise eyes lowered toward Mara’s hand. Confusion passed through them, followed by something that might once have been recognition.
Cracks spread outward from the wound. They travelled across the creature’s chest, climbed along its neck, and passed through every divided limb wrapped around Mara. Pale light escaped through the widening fractures.
Then the mermaid came apart.
Its flesh collapsed into grey dust, followed by its bones. The stolen faces within it remained suspended for one final instant before breaking into thin streams of smoke that scattered through the Silent Sea.
Nothing returned.
The claws vanished from Mara’s wounds, leaving her suspended beneath the grave-rope with one hand still extended.
Mara had just culled an abomination.
